The archive’s Microsoft Money Deluxe Sunset item provides the U.S. Deluxe installer, USMoneyDlxSunset.exe, under Download Options > Windows Executable. Downloading Sunset should not require payment, a product key, or activation.
Use this guide to identify the right edition, install it safely, restore your data, and understand which online features are permanently unavailable.
Where to download Money Plus Sunset today
Start with the Internet Archive item Microsoft Money Deluxe Sunset. Open Download Options, expand Windows Executable, and select the installer that matches your region:

Microsoft’s old download URL, https://www.microsoft.com/en-us/download/details.aspx?id=32434, is no longer available. TheWindowsClub documents its removal at this update, and Microsoft Q&A answers now direct users to the Internet Archive at this page.

The archived item’s displayed file list does not show a U.S. USMoneyBizSunset.exe installer. Therefore, do not assume that the Home & Business executable is available from that page.

Before installing: protect your data and payments
Make a backup
Copy your current Money data and backup files to separate storage before uninstalling or converting anything. If you later need to restore one, use File > Restore Backup, then select the backup file. This restoration path is described in Microsoft Q&A.

Cancel old online bill payments
Review scheduled online payments, especially automatic entries labeled “Apay”. Cancel them in Money or through your financial institution before switching. Sunset cannot continue Microsoft’s online payment service.

For each important data file tied to a Windows Live ID, open File > Password Manager and remove the Live ID. The archived instructions say you may assign a standard Money password afterward. This prevents an old online identity from blocking access to the file.
Installation steps
- Download the appropriate executable from the Internet Archive’s Windows Executable list.
- Uninstall older Money versions first. The archived Microsoft description specifically recommends this, although Sunset can also be installed as a standalone program or as an upgrade.
- Run the downloaded
.exeand follow the graphical setup wizard. The verified instructions do not require a command-line command. - Open Money and restore or convert your data file. Keep the original backup until you have checked accounts, categories, and investments.
Sunset editions do not require activation and can be reinstalled without activation. If setup asks for a product key or activation, you probably installed an older retail Money edition instead. A site demanding payment, a subscription, or a key is not providing the normal freeware Sunset distribution.

Windows compatibility and file conversion
The archive describes Sunset as running on Windows XP SP3 and later. That is a historical compatibility statement, not a current Microsoft guarantee for Windows 10 or Windows 11. A September 2025 Microsoft Q&A answer reports that version 17.0.120.3817 worked when tested on Windows 11, while also confirming that official Money support has ended. Treat that as an individual compatibility report, not certification.
Sunset can open and convert Money Plus files and older U.S. Money files such as Money 2006 and Money 2007. It cannot convert files created by regional, non-U.S. Money editions. A non-U.S. database may fail to open or convert in the U.S. Sunset edition; Sunset does not open every .mny file.
What still works—and what does not
Features that remain usable
- Local account, budget, debt, and investment record-keeping.
- Importing institution-supplied OFX or QIF files.
- Manual transaction entry and reconciliation.
- Manual investment-price updates through Portfolio Manager > Update Prices – Update Prices Manually.
- Local Help files instead of online Help.
Features permanently removed
- Online quotes and automatic investment-price retrieval.
- Money-initiated statement downloads or automatic bank synchronization.
- Online bill payment.
- MSN Money data synchronization.
Microsoft ended Money sales on June 30, 2009. Sunset was released in 2010 as a post-discontinuation version, and Money’s online services and assisted support ended on January 31, 2011. Consequently, an account-update or quote-update error in Sunset is expected; use manual entry, OFX/QIF imports, or manual price updates instead.

Common problems and the correct response
The download page asks for money
Sunset was distributed as freeware. Leave any page requesting payment, a subscription, or a product key and use the archived executable listing instead. See the licensing notes at TechSpot and TechYorker.
The installer requests activation
Check the filename and edition. Sunset removes activation; an activation prompt usually indicates an older retail Money installer.
Your old file will not open
Confirm that it is a U.S. Money file or a supported Money Plus/older U.S. version. Regional non-U.S. files are outside the stated conversion support. Restore a backup and try conversion again only after preserving the original.

Online updates fail
This is normal for Sunset. The online services were removed, so switch to OFX/QIF downloads, manual transactions, and manual investment-price entry.
A registry “Internet Explorer version” fix is suggested
A Microsoft Q&A volunteer suggested changing HKLMSoftwareWow6432NodeMicrosoftInternet ExplorerVersion to 9.11.10240.0, but the archived Microsoft instructions do not establish that edit as a general prerequisite. Do not treat it as required installation guidance.
Bottom line for a free download
The practical free source is the Internet Archive’s Microsoft Money Deluxe Sunset item, using USMoneyDlxSunset.exe for the U.S. Deluxe replacement. Install it only after backing up data and cancelling legacy online payments. It remains useful as an offline personal-finance program, but Microsoft-hosted downloads, online synchronization, quotes, statement downloads, and bill payment are no longer available.
