The estimate was a forecast for online retail spending during the event, not a confirmed figure for Amazon’s revenue. The “AI-powered” framing reflects a broader shift in shopping discovery; the available figures do not show that Amazon’s AI tools caused the projected sales.
What the $23.8 billion forecast measured
On July 8, 2025, coverage of Adobe Analytics’ projection put U.S. online spending during the July 8–11 Prime Day period at about $23.8 billion, a projected 28.4% increase year over year. That is a forecast, not a final tally or audited result. The estimate’s precise retailer coverage and methodology are not established in the available reporting, so it should not be described as Amazon-only sales or Amazon revenue. The contemporaneous report of the forecast is the basis for the figures here.

Several different financial measures can be blurred by the phrase “Prime Day sales.” U.S. online retail spending is not interchangeable with Amazon’s recognized revenue, marketplace sellers’ gross merchandise value, seller proceeds, Amazon operating profit, or shoppers’ actual savings. A large spending estimate says nothing by itself about margins or whether consumers paid less than they would have at another time.
Why the event was expected to draw more spending
A four-day promotion
Prime Day 2025 ran for four days, giving shoppers a longer window to browse and retailers more time to promote offers than a short event would. The event also coincided with summer and back-to-school shopping. More time can spread purchases across additional days; it does not establish that all the spending was new rather than shifted from later summer sales.

Mobile shopping
The same coverage reported an expectation of about $12.5 billion in mobile spending, roughly 52% to 52.5% of the projected total. Those are estimates, not confirmed results, and the reporting does not establish the underlying denominator or methodology in enough detail to treat the percentage as a precise measure. Mobile matters to promotions because app notifications, stored payment details, and fast checkout can make a limited-time offer easier to act on. That convenience can also reduce the time available to compare prices.
Mobile shopping and AI-assisted discovery may overlap, but the cited figures do not separate their effects or show how much either contributed to sales. The report compared the event’s scale with two Black Fridays; that is a characterization of the projected shopping period, not evidence that the events are equivalent in duration, retailer coverage, or accounting.

Competing retailers and categories
Prime Day has become an anchor for a wider promotional period. Walmart, Target, and other retailers can run competing offers, and shoppers may compare prices across sites rather than buy exclusively from Amazon. Electronics, appliances, sporting goods, apparel, and household products were among the categories discussed in contemporaneous coverage, but the forecast alone does not show which categories ultimately drove spending or whether their discounts were unusually deep.
What “AI-powered” does—and does not—mean
AI can influence shopping at several points: ranking search results, personalizing recommendations, summarizing product information, helping shoppers compare options, and directing people to offers. Amazon’s Rufus is a conversational shopping assistant described by Amazon; the company’s overview explains its intended role, but does not establish how often it was used during Prime Day 2025 or how much sales it generated. Generative-AI tools outside Amazon can also help people research products, seek recommendations, find deals, generate gift ideas, discover unfamiliar products, or build shopping lists. Adobe-reported comparisons in the contemporaneous account said visitors referred by AI sources stayed 8% longer, viewed 12% more pages, and bounced 23% less than other measured visitors. Those are engagement differences, not evidence that AI caused a purchase, raised spending, or produced incremental sales. The account does not provide enough methodological detail to assess the sample, time window, or absolute volume of AI referrals.
“AI-powered” therefore describes a set of discovery and personalization trends, not a demonstrated cause of the $23.8 billion projection. Better discovery does not necessarily mean a better price, a more accurate product choice, fewer returns, or more profit. AI-generated summaries can be wrong, and recommendations may reflect sponsored placements, availability, or a platform’s commercial priorities. Shoppers still need to verify specifications, reviews, seller identity, warranty, and return terms.
Discounts, tariffs, and the difference between sales and value
Prime Day’s appeal depends on offers that look compelling to consumers, but discounts have a cost to the businesses funding them. Contemporaneous coverage flagged tariff uncertainty as a pressure on merchants’ ability to discount. Higher import or fulfillment costs can limit promotional flexibility; sellers may also have advertising, marketplace, inventory, and shipping expenses. The available reporting does not establish how much these costs affected final prices or seller margins.

A sales record is not a profit record. A promotion can increase order volume while narrowing a seller’s margin, and a purchase brought forward from a later sale may change timing more than total annual demand. Nor does a displayed markdown automatically represent a meaningful saving: compare the current offer with a product’s price history and alternatives, not only with a list price.

How shoppers can assess a Prime Day offer
- Check the price history. Amazon-focused trackers such as Keepa and CamelCamelCamel can help show past Amazon prices. Their coverage and features may vary by marketplace, and a price chart does not account for coupons, shipping, product condition, or competing retailers.
- Compare the exact item. Match model numbers, size, included accessories, seller, and shipping costs. A similar-looking product may not be the same offer.
- Review the seller and terms. Check seller reputation, return eligibility, delivery timing, and warranty coverage before buying, especially in a marketplace listing.
- Use AI as a starting point. Treat summaries and recommendations as pointers to verify against the listing and independent product information, not as proof of quality or the lowest price.
- Account for membership. Many Prime Day deals are Prime-exclusive, though not every event offer necessarily is. A membership only makes financial sense if its recurring benefits justify its cost for your household; access to a sale does not guarantee a net saving.
What is known about the final result
The available reporting establishes the July 2025 forecast, not a verified final U.S. sales total for July 8–11 or an Amazon-reported revenue figure. It therefore does not support saying that Prime Day actually broke $24 billion. A separate contemporaneous coverage index links reporting from several outlets, but it does not itself settle the final amount or the forecast’s exact measurement scope. The defensible conclusion is narrower: Adobe’s reported projection put U.S. online spending around $23.8 billion during Amazon’s four-day 2025 event. Mobile commerce, an extended promotion, rival retailers’ offers, and AI-assisted discovery formed part of the broader context, but the published figures do not isolate AI’s contribution or establish final sales, profit, or consumer savings.
