Microsoft 365 is region-sensitive. A subscription, product key, payment method and Microsoft account billing country may need to match. If you have genuinely moved, Microsoft says you may need to change your account region and resolve the old-country subscription—by letting it expire or cancelling it—before buying in the new country. A subscription may continue working while you travel, but that does not guarantee that a new purchase, renewal or foreign product key will work.
Microsoft’s current country guidance is at Change your country or region in Microsoft Store.
The rule by situation
| Situation | What is likely to happen |
|---|---|
| Travelling with an existing subscription | It may continue to work, subject to account and service conditions. Travel is not the same as buying locally. |
| Permanently moving | Change the account and billing country, then let the old subscription expire or cancel it before purchasing locally. |
| Trying to buy a cheaper foreign plan | Checkout can fail because of country, payment, tax, eligibility or existing-subscription checks. |
| Redeeming a foreign product key | Microsoft says keys generally must be redeemed in the country or region where they were purchased. |
| Business tenant in another country | Billing profiles, tenant geography, licensing agreements and reseller terms require separate review. |
| Subscription bought through Apple, Google or a retailer | That billing partner generally controls cancellation, renewal and payment changes. |
Moving countries: the safest procedure
Microsoft intends a region change for a substantial move, not for routine travel or price shopping. Before changing anything, record the subscription, renewal date, seller, account, payment method, unredeemed keys, Family members and OneDrive usage. Microsoft says account balance does not transfer between regions, so spend it before moving where practical.
- Open account.microsoft.com/services and identify the Microsoft 365 subscription and purchase channel.
- Turn off recurring billing if you do not want another charge in the old market. This usually prevents renewal rather than immediately ending access.
- Check Microsoft’s cancellation screen carefully. Whether access ends immediately, a refund is available or unused time is treated in another way depends on the purchase channel, local law and eligibility.
- Change the Microsoft account country or region through the account profile, commonly under Your info and Edit profile info. Microsoft’s interface can change, so follow the current instructions at Microsoft’s country-and-region support page.
- Add a payment method whose billing address is in the new country. Microsoft says the account country should be changed before adding a payment method for another country, and the address should match the provider’s records. See Add a new bank or credit card to your Microsoft account.
- Wait for the old-region subscription to expire, or cancel it if necessary. Microsoft’s public guidance says the old subscription may have to be gone before a new-region subscription can be purchased.
- Buy the locally available Microsoft 365 plan at Microsoft’s Microsoft 365 page. Plan names, trials, currencies, taxes, features and promotional offers vary by country.
- Sign in to Word, Excel, Outlook, OneDrive and other apps with the same Microsoft account, then check storage, sharing and renewal settings.
If you are only visiting another country
Do not change your Microsoft account region merely because you are on holiday or on a short assignment. An existing subscription may function abroad, while a new purchase or renewal can still be checked against your account country, billing address, card issuer and subscription market.

A VPN changes your apparent network location; it does not change your Microsoft account country, billing profile, card-issuing country, tax status or product-key eligibility. Fake addresses, foreign prepaid cards and repeated region changes create activation, refund and support risks.
Why a foreign card may be rejected
A card issued abroad does not by itself establish eligibility for a subscription in that market. Common causes include:
- The Microsoft account country and Store region do not match the selected market.
- The billing address differs from the payment provider’s records.
- The payment method is unsupported in that country.
- Required tax or VAT details are missing.
- The account has an outstanding balance, is suspended or has a failed renewal.
- The region was changed within the previous three months.
- The subscription is billed by Apple, Google or another partner.
- The bank declines an international or recurring transaction.
Resolve the account or billing issue first, then retry with a locally supported method. Microsoft’s regional availability and billing-market information is at Choose your Microsoft 365 billing country/region.

Product keys and boxed purchases
Retail keys are not automatically global. Microsoft’s product-key troubleshooting guidance states that a key generally must be redeemed in the country or region where it was purchased. Errors can include “This product key isn’t meant for your region” or a message saying that the key cannot be used because the current subscription was set up in another country.

Before redeeming, verify the key’s intended country, seller, product type, redemption status and whether it is a Microsoft 365 subscription rather than a one-time Office license. Do not keep retrying a mismatched key. Ask the retailer for a refund or compatible replacement; redeem it only in its intended market if you are genuinely eligible; or follow Microsoft’s documented possibility of using a different Microsoft account or waiting for the current subscription to expire. Details are in Get help with product key errors on Office.com/setup.

Apple, Google or another billing partner
Subscriptions bought through Apple’s App Store, Google Play or certain retailers are generally managed by that partner for cancellation, renewal, payment changes and sometimes plan switching. Microsoft’s guidance is at Switch between Microsoft 365 subscriptions. A Microsoft account dashboard may not be able to fix a partner-owned billing problem.
Microsoft 365 Family and people abroad
Sharing a Family subscription with someone abroad is different from buying a foreign-region subscription. A Family invitation may let another person use included benefits, but it does not make a foreign product key compatible with the owner’s account or guarantee identical features in every market.

Business subscriptions and multinational organizations
Consumer region settings do not control a business tenant. Microsoft says business payment methods are connected to billing profiles in the Microsoft 365 admin center and require appropriate work-account permissions; changing an employee’s personal account region is not a substitute.
A tenant’s country or region can determine the default geography for Microsoft 365 services. Billing country, company incorporation, a user’s travel location, tenant geography, data storage location and license-assignment country are different concepts. Review Microsoft 365 Enterprise data geography before making assumptions about data residency.
Commercial programs add their own boundaries. Microsoft’s Open regional licensing rules appear at Open regional license programs, and broader program terms are at Microsoft Licensing Documents. A reseller or Cloud Solution Provider can advise on local invoices, taxes and affiliates, but cannot override Microsoft’s agreement or country provisions.

Files, OneDrive and access after a move
A country change is not documented as an automatic deletion of your Microsoft account or OneDrive files. The material risks are subscription, storage and feature changes. Before the old plan ends, check OneDrive usage, the new plan’s storage allowance, Family sharing, Outlook access and any country-specific services. A subscription ending can reduce or suspend paid benefits; Microsoft’s public guidance does not establish one universal current grace period or guarantee that unused time transfers between countries.
Choose the approach that fits
| Option | Best for | Main trade-off |
|---|---|---|
| Keep the original subscription | Temporary travel or a short assignment | Renewal may fail if the card, bank or billing market no longer works. |
| Change region and buy locally | A permanent relocation | The old subscription may need to expire or be cancelled, and local plans may differ. |
| Use an authorized local retailer | Local payment methods or invoices | Keys can be region-locked; verify authorization and redemption country. |
| Buy one-time Office | No need for recurring Microsoft 365 storage or subscription benefits | You give up included subscription storage and the subscription feature-update model. Microsoft describes the transition at Switch between Microsoft 365 subscriptions. |
| Use a local business reseller or CSP | Organizations needing procurement, tax or administrative help | Tenant geography, contract and licensing terms may still restrict the arrangement. |
Troubleshooting by error
| Problem | Likely cause | Response |
|---|---|---|
| “This product key isn’t meant for your region” | Key was sold for another market | Request a compatible key or retailer refund. |
| New subscription cannot be purchased | Old-region subscription is still active | Wait for expiry or cancel, then retry. |
| Foreign card is rejected | Region, billing address or payment-market mismatch | Change the account region first and use matching billing details. |
| Region cannot be changed | Recent region change, suspension, balance due or other account restriction | Clear the account issue and contact Microsoft support. |
| Apple or Google subscription cannot be changed in Microsoft account | Third-party billing ownership | Use the original store or billing partner. |
| Plan is unavailable | Country-specific product or trial availability | Select a locally available plan; features are not guaranteed equivalent. |
| Business payment method cannot be updated | Wrong billing profile or insufficient permissions | Use the Microsoft 365 admin center with billing permissions. |
| Key appears already used | Prior redemption or improper resale | Check Services & subscriptions and contact the seller or Microsoft. |
Final checklist before buying
- Is this a genuine long-term move rather than a visit or price-shopping attempt?
- Are you using the correct Microsoft account and purchase channel?
- Does the account country match the destination billing country?
- Does the payment address match the card provider?
- Has the old subscription expired or been properly cancelled?
- Does a retail key state the correct redemption country and product type?
- Have you checked OneDrive storage, Family sharing and plan differences?
- For work, have you reviewed the tenant, billing profile and licensing program?
For unresolved purchase, activation or billing problems, start with Microsoft 365 Support or the original billing partner. Exact availability and pricing should be checked in the destination country’s official Microsoft store because they change by market.
