The companies said the combined business would operate under the BeyondTrust name, with Bomgar CEO Matt Dircks leading it. CRN reported an expected closing date of October 1, 2018, while BeyondTrust later confirmed that the transaction actually completed on October 3, 2018.
What Bomgar announced
CRN reported on September 13, 2018, that Atlanta-based Bomgar had agreed to purchase Phoenix-based BeyondTrust. The deal terms were not disclosed in that report. The announcement said the combined company would use the BeyondTrust name and that Matt Dircks would lead the organization as CEO.
This was an announcement about a 2018 transaction, not a current comparison of security products. The company later published a completion announcement; its editor’s note specifies that the acquisition closed on October 3, 2018.

Why did Bomgar buy BeyondTrust?
The companies presented the deal as a combination of complementary privileged-access capabilities. CRN described Bomgar’s strengths as securing privileged credentials, remote-access sessions and endpoints. BeyondTrust was described as extending privileged-access controls across endpoints, servers, Internet of Things devices, cloud environments and network devices.
Overlapping capabilities
Dircks told CRN that the businesses overlapped in areas such as credential management and privilege escalation on Windows and Mac systems. Combining those capabilities was intended to give the merged company a broader portfolio rather than maintain two separate offerings in the same areas.
BeyondTrust’s Unix and Linux coverage
Dircks also identified Unix and Linux server-management capabilities as an important addition. In his description, Bomgar did not previously have the same breadth in that part of server administration, while BeyondTrust brought established capabilities there.

One broader privileged-access portfolio
The company’s completion announcement grouped the planned combined offering into five categories:
- Privileged password management
- Endpoint privilege management
- Secure remote access
- Vulnerability management
- An integrated platform
The announcement named BeyondInsight as the integration platform and referred to historical products including PowerBroker Password Safe and Bomgar Privileged Identity. Those names describe the portfolio as presented in 2018; the announcement does not establish their current packaging, availability or naming.
How the capabilities fit together
| Capability area | What the 2018 reporting associated with it | How it fit the combination |
|---|---|---|
| Privileged credentials and passwords | Bomgar and BeyondTrust both had credential-management capabilities | A shared area of overlap that could be consolidated |
| Privileged sessions and remote access | Bomgar was described as securing remote-access sessions | Provided the access-session component of the broader portfolio |
| Endpoint privilege management | Both companies were associated with endpoint privilege and escalation controls | Added overlapping Windows and Mac coverage |
| Unix and Linux server management | BeyondTrust brought capabilities Dircks said Bomgar lacked previously | Expanded the server environments addressed by the combined business |
| Vulnerability management | Listed by the company as a combined-portfolio category | Added a risk-management function alongside access controls |
| Platform integration | BeyondInsight was named as the integration platform | Outlined a way to connect the product categories |
Planned identity and leadership after the deal
The announcement said the merged organization would operate as BeyondTrust, rather than continue as a dual Bomgar-BeyondTrust brand. Matt Dircks, then Bomgar’s CEO, was named to lead the combined company.

Dircks emphasized continuity during the integration, saying, “The stupidest thing we could do is take something that’s working and screw it up.” His comment framed the plan as combining portfolios while protecting what customers already relied on.

Channel strategy and the “what happened to Bomgar?” question
CRN reported that channel development and cross-selling were part of the integration strategy. The rationale was that a broader portfolio could give partners more privileged-access technologies to take to existing and new customers. The reporting does not establish present-day partner terms or program availability.
For the immediate post-deal identity, the supported answer is that Bomgar’s combined business operated under the BeyondTrust name. The 2018 announcements do not, by themselves, provide a complete later corporate or product history.
What the transaction did—and did not—establish
- It established an agreement for Bomgar to acquire BeyondTrust in September 2018.
- It established the planned BeyondTrust name and Matt Dircks’s leadership of the combined company.
- It explained the strategic case as complementary privileged-access coverage, including credentials, sessions, endpoints and Unix/Linux servers.
- It established October 3, 2018, as the company-confirmed completion date, distinct from CRN’s October 1 expected date.
- It did not disclose purchase-price terms in CRN’s report.
- It does not establish current ownership, product names, pricing, availability or partner-program terms.
The Bottom Line
Bomgar’s 2018 BeyondTrust acquisition was presented as a portfolio-expansion deal: combine Bomgar’s credential, session and endpoint strengths with BeyondTrust’s broader server, Unix/Linux, cloud, IoT and network-device coverage. The combined company adopted the BeyondTrust name, and the acquisition was completed on October 3, 2018.
