Nissan Motor Co., Ltd. confirmed that information belonging to approximately 21,000 customers of Nissan Fukuoka Sales was among data copied during an unauthorized intrusion into a Red Hat server. The affected records included names, addresses, telephone numbers, portions of email addresses and sales-related customer information. Nissan said credit-card information was not included and that it had not confirmed any secondary use of the data.
What happened in the Nissan–Red Hat incident?
Red Hat told Nissan that an unauthorized party accessed a GitLab instance used by Red Hat’s Consulting team and copied some data from that environment. Red Hat isolated the instance, removed access and took steps to prevent re-entry. In its October 3, 2025 update, Red Hat said it had no reason at that time to believe other Red Hat services, products or its software supply chain were affected.
Nissan had hired Red Hat to develop a customer-management system for sales companies. Nissan subsequently confirmed that some of the copied information belonged to customers of Nissan Fukuoka Sales, the business formerly known as Fukuoka Nissan Motor. This is therefore a third-party vendor incident involving a Red Hat environment used for Nissan sales-system work, not an announcement that Nissan’s core corporate network was breached.
How many Nissan customers were affected?
Nissan identified approximately 21,000 customers. They were people who had purchased vehicles from, or received service from, the former Fukuoka Nissan Motor business, now Nissan Fukuoka Sales.

“Approximately” is important: Nissan’s figure is an estimate of the population whose information may have been included, rather than a claim that every person in that group had every listed data field copied.
What information was exposed?

The notice does not describe the sales-related information as payment credentials or banking data. Nissan explicitly said credit-card information was not included.

When did Nissan learn about the breach?
| Date | Event |
|---|---|
| September 26, 2025 | Red Hat detected unauthorized access, removed the access and took measures to block re-entry. |
| October 3, 2025 | Nissan said it received Red Hat’s report and immediately reported the incident to Japan’s Personal Information Protection Commission. |
| December 2025 | Nissan published its apology and incident report and said it was directly contacting people whose information may have been leaked. |
Was Nissan’s main network hacked?
The available notices describe unauthorized access to a Red Hat GitLab environment used by its Consulting team. Nissan’s statement concerns information held in that vendor environment for sales-system work. Red Hat said it had no reason, as of its October 3 update, to believe that other Red Hat services, products or its software supply chain were affected.
That distinction does not make the exposure harmless: vendor systems can contain real customer records. It does mean the public description is a supplier-environment incident, rather than evidence that attackers entered Nissan’s entire corporate network.

Has anyone used the leaked information?
Nissan said it had not confirmed any secondary use of the leaked information. Nissan also said the affected Red Hat server did not store other customer information and assessed that there was no further leakage risk from that server.
Those statements describe what Nissan had established in its notices; they are not a guarantee that a recipient will never receive a scam using the exposed details. The combination of a name, address, phone number and partial email address can make an unsolicited message appear credible.

What should Nissan Fukuoka customers do?
1. Treat unexpected contact as suspicious
Be cautious with telephone calls, postal mail and other communications that use personal details. A caller knowing your name, address or vehicle-service history is not proof that the caller is Nissan, a dealer or a bank.
2. Do not disclose secrets in response to an unsolicited message
- Do not provide passwords, one-time authentication codes, card numbers or bank details to an inbound caller or message.
- Do not follow a payment or login link supplied in an unexpected email or text.
- End the contact and reach the organization through a phone number or website you already trust.
3. Verify any Nissan communication independently
If Nissan Fukuoka Sales contacts you, ask for the incident notice details, then verify the contact using an independently obtained dealership or Nissan channel rather than replying to the original message.

4. Watch accounts without assuming card replacement is required
Because Nissan said credit-card information was not included, the notice does not by itself indicate that every affected customer needs a new card. Continue checking bank and card statements for transactions you do not recognize and contact the relevant financial institution immediately if one appears.
5. Keep the notice and report suspected fraud
Save any letter or message Nissan sends. If you receive a suspicious call, letter or email that appears to exploit the incident, preserve the sender details and report it to the organization being impersonated and the appropriate Japanese authorities.
What did Nissan do after the incident?
- It reported the incident to Japan’s Personal Information Protection Commission after receiving Red Hat’s report.
- It published an apology and incident report in December 2025.
- It said it was directly contacting people whose information may have been leaked.
- It warned affected people to be alert for suspicious telephone calls, postal mail and other communications using personal details.
Bottom line for affected customers
Nissan confirmed that approximately 21,000 Nissan Fukuoka Sales customers were potentially represented in data copied from a Red Hat environment. The listed information was names, addresses, telephone numbers, portions of email addresses and sales-related customer information; credit-card data was excluded. Nissan has reported no confirmed secondary use. The sensible response is heightened skepticism toward personalized contact and normal, prompt monitoring of financial accounts—not assuming that a payment-card breach occurred.
