Profile language and LinkedIn’s display language are different
LinkedIn uses “language” for two separate settings:
| Setting | What it changes | Where to change it |
|---|---|---|
| Primary profile language | The main written version of your member profile. You can keep additional language versions. | Your profile page → Profile language |
| LinkedIn display language | LinkedIn-generated menus, buttons, navigation and page text. It does not translate your profile, posts or comments. | Me → Settings & Privacy → Account preferences → General preferences → Language |
LinkedIn-generated content follows the selected display language, while member-written content remains in the language in which it was created. See LinkedIn’s language-setting guidance.
Change an existing profile version to primary on desktop
LinkedIn’s current instructions place multilingual-profile management on the desktop website. To switch a language version that already exists:
#1 Best Overall
- Open LinkedIn in a desktop browser.
- Click Me at the top of the homepage, then choose View Profile.
- In the profile page’s right-hand panel, find Profile language.
- Click the edit (pencil) icon beside it.
- In the Profile language settings window, open Primary profile language.
- Select the language version you want to make primary.
- Confirm or save if LinkedIn prompts you, then return to the profile and verify the selected version.
The former primary version can remain as a secondary language profile; changing the designation does not by itself delete it. The control and labels can vary slightly as LinkedIn updates its interface. Official instructions: LinkedIn multilingual profiles.
Add a language that does not yet exist
If the target language is absent, create that profile version before switching it:
- Go to Me → View Profile on desktop.
- Click the edit icon next to Profile language, then select Add language.
- Choose the language.
- Adjust the first and last name for that audience if appropriate.
- Write or translate the headline and complete the available fields.
- Select Make primary language when the option appears.
- Click Create Profile, then Done.
- Edit the remaining sections in the new language.
LinkedIn does not automatically translate your profile. A new version may therefore be incomplete until you manually localize it. If a language is not listed, LinkedIn says the profile may already exist in that language.
Can you change the profile language in the mobile app?
According to LinkedIn’s current help documentation, creating, deleting and managing multiple profile-language versions is not available in the mobile app. Use a desktop browser for the primary-language switch.

- Designed as a quick reference tool and an easy-to-use study guide, this inexpensive and up-to-date book offers fast, effective communications.
- The perfect companion for tourists and business travelers in Spain and Latin America, it features words, phrases, and sentences that cover everything from asking directions to making reservations
- Over 700 conveniently organized expressions include terms for modern telecommunications as well as phrases related to transportation, shopping, services, medical and emergency situations, and other common circumstances.
- A phonetic pronunciation accompanies each phrase.
You can still change the app’s display language, which is a different setting. On desktop, use Me → Settings & Privacy → Account preferences → General preferences → Language; the selection saves automatically.
Android 14 and later
- Open the phone’s Settings.
- Tap System → Languages → App Languages.
- Select LinkedIn, then choose a language.
Labels vary by manufacturer, and LinkedIn says this requires Android 14 or later with more than one device language installed. Some devices instead use Settings → Apps → LinkedIn → Preferred Language → Language. On iPhone and other setups, the app generally follows the device language. None of these changes the primary written profile language. Sources: LinkedIn language settings and multilingual profile guidance.
What visitors see after you switch
LinkedIn generally shows visitors the profile version matching the language they are using on LinkedIn. If you have not created that version, LinkedIn falls back to your primary profile language. When several versions exist, a visitor can manually choose among them.
Language versions can have distinct public-profile URLs. Review the public presentation and language-specific links after changing the primary version; see LinkedIn’s visitor guidance and public-language URL information.

Search engines control their own crawling. LinkedIn says public-profile changes can take weeks or months to appear in search results, so do not expect Google or Bing to update immediately. See public-profile search visibility and indexing information.

Make primary the language most likely to be used by your main audience—such as recruiters in your target market, prospective clients, hiring managers or professional connections. A secondary version expands international reach, but every additional version creates another profile to maintain.
Keep every language version accurate
Changing the primary designation does not translate or synchronize fields. LinkedIn advises updating secondary profiles separately. Audit each version after a job change, promotion or contact update:
- First and last name
- Headline
- About section
- Current position and experience descriptions
- Education
- Featured items and media captions
- Skills and certifications where wording or context matters
- Contact information
- Custom profile URL and public-language URLs
- Public-profile visibility settings
When editing, confirm that you are viewing the intended language version; LinkedIn’s About-section help notes that members can otherwise edit the wrong version. Guidance on maintaining secondary versions is available at LinkedIn’s secondary-language profile article.

Troubleshoot a missing or incorrect language option
- Switch to desktop: the mobile app does not manage multilingual profile versions.
- Open the profile itself: the control is under Profile language, not the general Language setting in Settings & Privacy.
- Check whether the language already exists: select it under Primary profile language rather than trying to add a duplicate.
- Create it if necessary: use Add language, provide the translated content and choose Make primary language.
- Check the active version: switch to the correct language tab before editing; otherwise changes may appear to be missing.
- Refresh the account view: reload, sign out and back in, or test another browser or an incognito window to rule out stale cached display.
- Inspect the public result: open the public profile and its language-specific URL to confirm what visitors see.
- Contact LinkedIn Help: if the control remains absent on desktop, use LinkedIn support. Do not delete the existing profile as a routine workaround; current documentation describes a direct switch.
