An Amazon Wish List—now generally labeled Lists—is a saved collection of product pages. You can keep it private as a shopping reminder, share it with selected people, or publish it for gifts. A List does not reserve inventory, lock a price, or replace Amazon checkout; each buyer still places a normal order.
What an Amazon List does
You can save products for later, organize several lists, add notes, quantities and priorities, and let other people buy gifts. A List can also associate a delivery address with the recipient and show purchase status according to its settings. Eligible price reductions and deals can generate Amazon Shopping app notifications. See Amazon’s current overview at Amazon’s guide to creating and sharing Wish Lists.

- Enter a name and select Create.
Amazon’s app layout changes, but Your Lists is the stable destination. Amazon also documents list creation and sharing in its current instructions.

Privacy and sharing
Visibility choices
| Setting | Who can access it |
|---|---|
| Private | Only the owner. |
| Shared | People who receive the link or invitation; permissions can be view-only or view-and-edit. |
| Public | People who receive the link and, where available, people who find it through Amazon list-search features. |
New Lists remain private until the owner shares them; claims that they are automatically public are outdated. For dependable access, send the direct link because a shared List may not appear in public search.

How someone buys from your List
- The buyer opens the shared List.
- They select an item, choose a quantity and select Add to Cart (or the equivalent control).
- They complete normal Amazon checkout using their own account and payment method.
- When offered, they select the List’s associated delivery address; otherwise they enter another address.
- They place the order. The owner does not approve each purchase.
The item may leave the unpurchased view after ordering, depending on marketplace behavior and the List’s settings.

Purchased items and surprise protection
Keep purchased items on your list
This keeps bought products visible, useful as a record of gifts or as a signal to later buyers that an item is already covered.
Don’t spoil my surprises
This hides purchase information from the owner for a period of time while Amazon may warn a buyer about a possible duplicate. The two settings are independent: keeping items visible helps buyers avoid duplicates, while surprise protection preserves secrecy. Surprise protection is not a guarantee—an owner can buy the item, a purchase can happen outside the List, or Amazon may fail to match it.

- Gift Card is nested inside a specialty gift box

Find these controls under Manage List; placement can vary. Amazon’s forum explanation is at this purchase-and-surprise settings page.
Delivery addresses and the 2026 privacy change
A List address lets gift buyers ship without receiving the recipient’s full address. That protection is no longer absolute for public Lists. Effective March 25, 2026, Amazon removed the former restriction that limited List purchases to products handled directly by Amazon. Eligible Marketplace sellers can now fulfill List gifts, and delivery information may be shared with the seller and delivery partners.

For a public creator or influencer List, use a PO box or another non-residential address where appropriate. Do not describe a public List as guaranteeing that your home address stays hidden. Coverage and Amazon’s address guidance are available from Amazon, Heise, TechSpot and Android Headlines.
Seller and fulfillment labels
- Sold by Amazon: Amazon is the seller.
- Sold by another company: a Marketplace seller is the seller.
- Shipped by Amazon: Amazon handles fulfillment, but another company may still be the seller.
Check the selected offer at checkout. A product can have multiple sellers, and the offer selected later may differ from the one originally saved.
Independent reader supportYour contribution helps us test, update, and keep practical guides available for everyone. Why a List item may not be purchasable
- Unavailable listing: the product is out of stock, discontinued or no longer offered by the original seller.
- Offer changed: price, seller, delivery, returns and fulfillment differ among offers.
- Address restriction: seller, category, state, local, oversized, hazardous-material, PO-box or validation rules can block delivery.
- No usable List address: the buyer must enter an address manually.
- Already purchased: surprise settings can conceal the status from the owner.
- Wrong marketplace: an Amazon.com List may not behave the same on another country’s site; prices, currency, taxes, sellers and delivery rules vary.
For address-specific problems, consult Amazon’s delivery-address help.

Quick Recap
Recommended setup by use
| Use case | Suggested setup |
|---|---|
| Private shopping reminder | Keep it Private; omit an address unless needed; enable Keep purchased items on your list for a record. |
| Family gift list | Use Shared access, send a direct link, choose View only unless editing is needed, add a deliverable address and decide whether surprises should be hidden. |
| Public creator list | Assume third-party fulfillment can expose delivery information; use a non-residential address where appropriate and check seller and fulfillment details for sensitive items. |
Claims that no longer hold
- Lists are public by default: false under Amazon’s current guidance.
- Amazon always hides the full address: unsafe after the March 25, 2026 Marketplace change.
- Purchased products always disappear: visibility depends on List settings and surprise behavior.
- A List reserves an item: it does not reserve inventory or price.
- Every List purchase comes from Amazon: Marketplace sellers can fulfill eligible items.
