The best shampoo bar depends on your hair texture, scalp needs and the type of formula—not on the word “natural” or on a bar’s shape alone. This 2026 shortlist covers a co-wash for curls, moisture-focused and smoothing bars, a fragrance-free option, fine-hair and scent-led choices, and a lower-lather formula. The observations below come from testing and reporting by The Independent, NBC Select and Glamour; those publications did not test every bar under identical laboratory conditions.
Our seven picks at a glance
| Shampoo bar | Best suited to | Reported strengths | Important limitations |
|---|---|---|---|
| Lush Avocado Co-Wash | Curly and coily hair needing conditioning | Avocado, olive oil and cocoa butter; tester reported defined, moisturized curls | Co-wash rather than clarifying cleanser; can leave residue; may be used quickly if stored poorly |
| An’du Nourishment Shampoo Bar | Dry hair | Clean feel without a stripped finish and a slight moisturizing film, according to tester Sabrina Sahota | That residual feel may be less suitable for oily hair |
| Ethique Curl Defining Solid Shampoo Bar | Curly or color-treated hair | Shea butter, cocoa seed butter and glycerin; NBC Select reports an 80-wash claim and color-treated-hair suitability | Lemongrass fragrance; wash count is a brand claim, not an independently verified result |
| J.R. Liggett’s Tea Tree & Hemp Oil Shampoo Bar | Shoppers seeking a fragrance-free listing | Tea tree, hemp and olive oils; NBC Select reports a large volume of positive retailer reviews | Retail ratings change; no established medical proof for dermatitis or hair-growth claims |
| Davines Love Smoothing Shampoo Bar | People prioritizing smoothing and lather | Glamour testers reported observations about effective cleansing, smoothing, scent and grip | One tester found the bar bulky; results are personal editorial observations |
| Anihana Shampoo Bar | Soft-feeling hair with a gentler lather preference | Manuka honey, lentil extract, almond oil and glycerin; Glamour tester reported softness | Comparatively lower lather in Glamour’s testing |
| Lush Honey I Washed My Hair | Sweet-scent fans | Honey, bergamot oil and Brazilian orange oil are listed by NBC Select; Glamour reported lather and lingering scent | Fragrance may not suit sensitive scalps; storage and rinse habits still matter |
Prices and availability vary by seller and were not consistently stated in the reviewed coverage, so check the current listing before buying. The Ethique bar’s “80 washes” is a reported product claim from NBC Select, not a comparative test result.
What is the best shampoo bar?
There is no universal winner. Start with hair type, texture and scalp health, then decide whether you need a true cleansing shampoo or a conditioning co-wash. A bar that leaves curls supple may feel coated on fine, oily hair; a strongly cleansing bar may be uncomfortable on dry or sensitive hair.
Soap bars versus syndet bars
“Shampoo bar” describes a format, not one chemistry. The Independent distinguishes traditional soap bars, which contain more oil or fat and have an alkaline pH, from syndet bars made with synthetic surfactants and formulated more like liquid shampoo in solid form. Traditional soap can leave hair dry, frizzy or difficult to manage. Ingredient lists in the reviewed product coverage do not establish a soap-versus-syndet classification for every pick, so do not infer the formula from marketing language alone.

How the seven products differ
For curly and coily hair: Lush Avocado Co-Wash
The Independent describes this as a conditioning co-wash containing avocado, olive oil and cocoa butter. Tester Nicole Ocran reported defined, moisturized curls. Because it is designed to condition rather than provide a strong clarifying cleanse, it can leave residue or buildup when rinsed incompletely. The Independent notes that users may need a separate clarifying shampoo to remove that buildup. Store it where air can circulate; the publication says it can be used up quickly if left wet.
For dry hair: An’du Nourishment
Independent tester Sabrina Sahota described a clean, non-stripped feel with a slight film of moisture. That balance may appeal to dry hair, while the same film could feel heavy on an oily scalp. Treat this as an editor’s observation, not a guarantee for every porosity or curl pattern.

For curls and color-treated hair: Ethique Curl Defining
NBC Select lists shea butter, cocoa seed butter, glycerin and lemongrass fragrance, and describes the bar as safe for color-treated hair. Its guide reports the manufacturer’s 80-wash claim and a 4.6-star average from more than 400 Ulta reviews in 2026. The rating is a retailer snapshot reported by NBC Select, not an independent performance measurement. Use the bar’s richer ingredients as a reason to assess how your hair responds, not as proof that it will define every curl.

For a fragrance-free listing: J.R. Liggett’s Tea Tree & Hemp Oil
NBC Select identifies this bar as a fragrance-free option and lists tea tree, hemp and olive oils. It reports a 4.2-star average from more than 14,000 Amazon reviews in 2026. Both the score and review count are volatile. Brand statements about dermatitis relief or hair growth are not established medical outcomes in the reviewed evidence; consult a clinician for persistent scalp symptoms.
For smoothing and a substantial lather: Davines Love Smoothing
Glamour’s commerce writer Alanna Martine Kilkeary and editor Malia Griggs tested this bar and reported on lather, smoothing, feel, scent and grip. One tester found it effective but bulky. Those are named testers’ personal editorial results, not controlled clinical measurements, so use them to anticipate the experience rather than to predict a guaranteed result.

For softness with less lather: Anihana
Glamour highlights manuka honey, lentil extract, almond oil and glycerin. Its tester reported soft hair but comparatively lower lather. That may suit someone who prefers a less foamy wash, while people who rely on abundant lather may find application less intuitive.
For a lingering sweet scent: Lush Honey I Washed My Hair
NBC Select lists honey, bergamot oil and Brazilian orange oil. Glamour’s tester reported lather and a scent that lingered after washing. Fragrance and essential oils can be a poor match for reactive scalps, so patch-test cautiously and stop if irritation develops.

- Fully saturate your hair. Do not start on merely damp hair; water helps the bar spread and activate.
- Apply enough product. Work the bar between wet hands or glide it over the scalp and lengths according to the maker’s directions. Inadequate application can leave hair heavy, dull or coated.
- Massage the scalp. Concentrate cleansing where oil and styling residue collect, then let the lather move through the lengths rather than rough-scrubbing them.
- Rinse longer than you think necessary. This is especially important with conditioning co-washes such as Lush Avocado Co-Wash.
- Clarify when buildup persists. A co-wash is not automatically a clarifying cleanser. If repeated rinsing does not remove residue, use a separate clarifying shampoo appropriate for your hair.
- Dry the bar between uses. A draining dish or ventilated travel case can reduce premature softening. No specific accessory was tested in the reviewed sources.
How to choose by hair type, scalp and priorities
Curly or coily hair
Consider a conditioning co-wash or a curl-oriented syndet-style bar, but monitor buildup. Lush Avocado Co-Wash emphasizes moisture; Ethique Curl Defining is positioned for curls and is reported as color-treated-hair safe.
Dry, coarse or bleached hair
Look for a comfortable cleanse without a squeaky or stripped finish. The Independent’s report on An’du describes a slight moisturizing film, while Davines Love Smoothing was reported by Glamour testers as smoothing.
Fine or oily hair
Heavier oils and conditioning films may flatten fine hair or feel greasy on an oily scalp. Use a smaller amount, rinse thoroughly and consider a lighter cleansing bar; the reviewed evidence does not establish a single best fine-hair formula.

Sensitive scalp
Check the full fragrance and essential-oil list rather than relying on “natural” labeling. Fragrance-free positioning may help some shoppers, but tea tree oil and other botanicals can still irritate particular people. Persistent itching, scaling or pain warrants medical advice.
Thinning-looking hair
Glamour includes Kitsch Rosemary & Biotin as an editorial option for thinning-looking hair, but the reviewed material does not establish that a shampoo bar regrows hair. Treat rosemary, biotin or similar growth language as brand positioning unless supported by clinical evidence.
What the testing actually tells you
The Independent says its testers considered formulations and ingredients, including sulfate- and silicone-free status, as well as lather, scent and results across different hair types. NBC Select combines expert recommendations, highly rated products and editor-tested items. Glamour reports testing of highly rated bars with observations attributed to named staff testers. These approaches are useful for practical buying decisions, but they are not a standardized head-to-head laboratory test.
Solid bars can reduce reliance on plastic bottles, according to the reviewed publications. However, the available coverage does not provide a comparable lifecycle assessment or a quantified environmental saving, so no precise waste reduction should be assumed.
