No—Newegg Wasn’t Started or Owned by the Same People as Egghead

No. Egghead and Newegg were separate computer retailers with different origins. Victor D. Alhadeff founded Egghead in 1983, while Newegg launched separately in the United States in 2001 under Fred Chang’s leadership. Available corporate records do not show a common founder, owner, acquisition, or successor relationship.

Why the companies are easy to confuse

Both brands used egg-related names, sold computers and electronics, and operated during the shift from physical stores to online retail. Egghead’s online brand was active around the time Newegg launched. Those similarities explain the association, but they are not evidence of shared ownership.

Egghead’s actual corporate history

Period What happened
1983 Victor D. Alhadeff founded Egghead, Inc., a specialty retailer of personal-computer software and accessories, according to an SEC filing: SEC filing identifying Alhadeff as founder.
1990 Alhadeff stopped serving as Egghead’s chairman and acquired Egghead University, a separate training division. His later departure means “Egghead’s founder” should not be read as “continuous owner until the company closed.”
1998 The business shifted from physical stores toward an online model, as described in Egghead.com’s SEC filing: Egghead.com SEC filing.
November 1999 Online retailer Onsale acquired Egghead.com and changed its own name to Egghead.com, Inc. This was a corporate transaction involving Egghead’s business—not the creation of Newegg.
August 15, 2001 Egghead.com filed for Chapter 11 bankruptcy.
Late 2001 Amazon paid $6.1 million in cash for Egghead.com’s domain name and intellectual property. The transaction did not include the retailer’s physical inventory and equipment, so “Amazon bought Egghead” is an incomplete description. Computerworld report

Newegg began separately

Newegg’s Form 20-F says the company was founded and Newegg.com launched in the United States in 2001. Fred Chang is identified with Newegg’s founding and early leadership; company disclosures also describe him as a major shareholder and vice chairman in its 2024 annual-report materials: Newegg 2024 Annual Report.

Nothing in the cited corporate history identifies Newegg as an Egghead rebrand, an Egghead acquisition, or a company formed from Egghead’s operating assets. There is also no reliable evidence in these records that Chang founded, owned, managed, or acquired Egghead.

Who controls Newegg now?

Ownership changes, so the date matters. Newegg Commerce, Inc. reported in its Form 20-F filed April 28, 2026, for the fiscal year ended December 31, 2025, that publicly traded Hangzhou Liaison Interactive Information Technology Co. (Hangzhou Lianluo) held a majority stake through its subsidiary Digital Grid. The filing listed approximate voting control as of March 31, 2026:

Person or entity Approximate voting power
Zhitao He 53.1%
Vladimir Galkin 20.9%
Fred Chang 20.5%
Combined total for the three listed holders 94.5%

These figures come from Newegg’s filing: Newegg Form 20-F filed April 28, 2026. A founder is the person who starts a company; a shareholder owns shares; a parent company controls a subsidiary; and voting control is the ability to influence corporate decisions. Chang’s Newegg stake therefore does not create a connection to Egghead.

The distinction in one timeline

Company Origin Later outcome
Egghead Founded by Victor D. Alhadeff in 1983 Onsale acquired Egghead.com in 1999; Egghead.com filed bankruptcy in 2001; Amazon acquired selected domain and intellectual-property assets.
Newegg Launched separately in 2001 under Fred Chang’s leadership Later became majority-controlled through Hangzhou Lianluo and Digital Grid, with the voting positions reported above as of March 31, 2026.

Answers to the common versions of the question

  • Did Newegg buy Egghead? No evidence in the cited corporate records shows that it did.
  • Did Egghead change its name to Newegg? No. Egghead.com’s 1999 name change involved Onsale becoming Egghead.com, Inc.; Newegg launched as a separate business in 2001.
  • Did Amazon sell Egghead’s business to Newegg? No evidence shows that. Amazon bought selected Egghead.com assets, principally the domain and intellectual property.
  • Was Fred Chang an Egghead executive? The available records identify him with Newegg, not Egghead.
  • Did both companies sell computers? Yes. Their overlapping products and timing reflect the same broad market, not common ownership.
  • Is Egghead.com still the same retailer? No. The original operating business went through bankruptcy, while Amazon acquired selected online assets.

Bottom line

Newegg is not a continuation of Egghead and was not started or owned by Egghead’s founder. Egghead began with Victor D. Alhadeff, changed hands through Onsale, and ended its operating life in bankruptcy. Newegg launched independently in 2001 and, according to its April 2026 filing, is majority-controlled through Hangzhou Lianluo/Digital Grid. The connection is a similar name and overlapping computer-retail history—not shared founders or ownership.
