In the United States in August 2026, a functional Samsung Galaxy S20 5G usually costs about $145–$200 used. A good unlocked model generally merits $160–$200, while a professionally refurbished unit commonly runs $190–$230 or more when warranty and returns are meaningful. The phone launched at $999.99 in 2020, but it is now primarily a used or refurbished purchase rather than a current Samsung retail product.
Price alone is not enough: verify the exact model, carrier compatibility, battery condition, screen, return policy and remaining software support before paying.

What “Galaxy S20” means
“Galaxy S20” can describe the standard S20 5G, S20+ 5G, S20 Ultra 5G, the separate S20 FE, or regional LTE-only versions. The prices below concern the original U.S. 5G lineup; do not treat an S20 FE listing as a standard S20 without checking the model.
U.S. standard S20 5G phones generally use the SM-G981 model family. Carrier editions, international variants and unlocked U.S. models can differ in bands and software, so obtain the exact model number before buying.

Galaxy S20 5G
The standard model is the compact option and the cheapest entry to the family. Samsung specified 12 GB of RAM, 128 GB storage, microSD expansion up to an additional 1 TB, a 120 Hz display, wireless charging, Wireless PowerShare, IP68 design and a 4,000 mAh battery. Its listed cameras are 12 MP wide, 64 MP telephoto and 12 MP ultrawide. Specifications: Samsung specification sheet.
Target roughly $145–$200, with $160–$190 a sensible zone for a verified unlocked example.

Galaxy S20+ 5G
The S20+ offers a larger display and battery than the standard phone. Its original MSRP was $1,199.99, but a precise August 2026 used range is not established here; compare current listings by model, condition, battery and warranty rather than extrapolating from launch price.
Galaxy S20 Ultra 5G
The Ultra is the largest model, with a 6.9-inch display and 5,000 mAh battery. It suits buyers who specifically want the larger screen, battery or camera hardware, not merely the highest launch specification. Its $1,399.99 launch price does not justify an inflated used price.
Is the S20 still sold new?
Normal U.S. retail supply is no longer the norm. Most offers are used, refurbished, open-box, old third-party stock, carrier inventory or imports. A “new” listing may have an aged battery, a third-party warranty or a regional model.
Rank #4
- The Samsung Galaxy S20+ has a large 6.7-inch Dynamic AMOLED 2X display with HDR10+ support, delivering rich contrast and true-to-life colors, perfect for immersive media consumption.
Samsung still has indexed certified-renewed pages, including an S20 Ultra listing observed at $850: Samsung U.S. product page. That price is not representative of the wider used market; compare the warranty and terms against independent sellers.
Used versus refurbished
| Factor | Used marketplace | Refurbished seller |
|---|---|---|
| Price | Usually lower | Usually higher |
| Condition | More variable | Often more standardized |
| Warranty | Seller-dependent | Often included, but read terms |
| Battery guarantee | Frequently unclear | May be specified |
| Returns | Varies by listing | Often clearer |
| Best fit | Lowest price | Lower transaction risk |
Swappa can provide lower prices and listing-level seller information; eligible business listings may include a one-year limited warranty or Phonecheck certification, but neither is universal. Back Market offers grading, seller information and reviews, but its premium still requires checking the specific battery terms, seller and return policy. eBay has the broadest selection, including international and carrier-specific phones, so model and lock verification are especially important: eBay unlocked category and eBay S20 5G category.
How much should you pay?
- Excellent value: under $160 for a functional, compatible phone with credible listing details.
- Fair unlocked price: $160–$190.
- Refurbished premium: about $190–$230 when a real warranty, return period and stated testing justify it.
- Questionable: above $230 unless battery, condition and protection are unusually strong.
These are editorial thresholds from the observed July–August 2026 U.S. listings, not fixed prices. Include tax, shipping and the value of return protection in your comparison.

What to check before buying
- Model and region: Confirm the full model number and that it is a U.S. version if you need U.S. carrier support. International models can have different processors, bands, eSIM behavior, firmware and warranty.
- Unlock and IMEI: Ask whether it is factory unlocked or merely carrier unlocked. Check blacklist status, unpaid balances and activation eligibility with your carrier. “Unlocked” does not guarantee compatibility with every network.
- Screen: Test white, gray, red, green and blue screens for OLED burn-in, image retention, dead pixels and cracks, including the navigation-bar and camera-cutout areas.
- Battery: Request available health diagnostics, test for shutdowns under load, and verify wired, wireless and fast charging. Samsung’s 4,000 mAh figure is the original rated capacity, not the health of a five-to-six-year-old unit.
- Port and trays: Make sure the USB-C cable stays secure, charging and data transfer work, and the SIM and microSD trays are present and functional.
- Cameras and biometrics: Test autofocus, stabilization, lens switching, flash, 4K video, front camera and fingerprint reader. Inspect camera glass for scratches.
- Connectivity: Test Wi-Fi, Bluetooth, GPS, NFC and the relevant LTE/5G connection where possible.
- Protection: Confirm the return window, shipping responsibility, warranty length, battery terms and seller reputation in writing.
- Software: Check the device’s current security-patch level and update behavior for its exact model and region before relying on it for several years.
IP68 describes the original design, not a used phone’s present condition. Cracks, repairs, opened chassis or damaged gaskets can compromise water resistance; never treat an old S20 as waterproof.
Software-support and battery realities
Samsung originally promised three generations of Android operating-system updates and four years of security updates for the S20 series: Samsung Newsroom. That commitment should not be interpreted as ongoing 2026 support for every model and region. Verify the actual patch status on the phone you receive.
The battery is a separate risk from software. Two phones with identical specifications can have very different runtime after years of use, so a return period is more valuable than an attractive headline price.
Is the Galaxy S20 worth buying in 2026?
Buy it when
- You can get a verified, compatible unit around $150–$190.
- You want a relatively compact phone, 120 Hz display and microSD support.
- You accept limited remaining official support and can return a weak-battery device.
- It is for a secondary or budget role where the lower price matters.
Choose something newer when
- Long-term security updates are essential.
- You need dependable battery life for several more years.
- The S20 price approaches a newer used Galaxy model.
- You rely on the phone for banking, business or other security-sensitive work.
Do not pay extra merely for a rare color, original packaging, a “new” label without meaningful warranty, or a carrier model described as universally unlocked. Compare the complete offer: model, network compatibility, battery, condition, returns and warranty.
Bottom line
For a U.S. buyer in August 2026, a good unlocked Galaxy S20 5G is generally worth about $160–$200. It remains a capable low-cost phone when bought with buyer protection, but its age, battery uncertainty and limited remaining software support make it a poor choice at inflated prices.
