These are restaurant-level medians, not official McDonald’s state averages or guaranteed prices at every location. The number you pay can vary by restaurant, ordering channel, date and available promotions.

Why prices differ within and between states

Local restaurant pricing

A state median summarizes sampled restaurants; it does not mean every McDonald’s in that state charges the same amount. FastFoodIndex says about half of the price variation it measures occurs between restaurants inside the same state.

Pickup versus delivery

The table uses pickup prices. McDonald’s states on its official U.S. deals page: Price and participation vary. Prices may be higher for McDelivery. Delivery-platform listings therefore should not be substituted for in-store or pickup prices.

Offers and time of purchase

Coupons and limited-time offers can change the amount charged. McDonald’s listed an $8 Big Mac Meal on September 30, 2026, but that was a meal promotion—not the price of a standalone Big Mac and not a state median.

How the state figures were calculated

FastFoodIndex collected the pickup price of the menu item listed as a Big Mac at priced U.S. McDonald’s restaurants, removed obvious placeholder prices and calculated the median for each state. Its September 25, 2026 national sample contains 12,233 restaurants across 49 states and Washington, D.C. The source publishes a state median only when at least three restaurants are available.

A median is the middle observed price after prices are ordered; it is not the arithmetic average. The national sample’s middle 80% spans $5.19 to $7.19, showing that a single national figure does not describe every location.

Why delivery listings can look much higher

McMenuCost’s separate September 13, 2026 collection used one Uber Eats-listed McDonald’s per state and Washington, D.C. Its examples ranged from $5.29 in Cheyenne, Wyoming, to $9.50 in Anchorage, Alaska. Because that sample uses one selected store and delivery-menu prices, it illustrates channel and location differences rather than providing a second state average.

Historical context

McDonald’s USA reported in its May 2024 “U.S. Pricing: Myths vs. Facts” document that the average U.S. Big Mac price rose from $4.39 in 2019 to $5.29 in 2024, a 21% increase. Those are company-reported national averages for the stated years, so they should not be combined with the September 2026 state medians as if they were one continuous dataset.

How to check your actual price

  1. Open the McDonald’s app or the website for your specific restaurant.
  2. Choose pickup rather than McDelivery if you want a price comparable to the table.
  3. Check the standalone Big Mac listing, not a meal bundle or coupon price.
  4. Confirm the restaurant, tax, fees and any offer before ordering.
