Boeing announced on December 13, 2012, that Pratyush “Prat” Kumar would become president of Boeing India, effective December 14. He succeeded Dinesh Keskar and became Boeing’s senior in-country leader, responsible for developing and executing the company’s India strategy, coordinating operations and partnerships, and managing relationships with Indian businesses and government stakeholders.
This was a country-business leadership appointment—not a global Boeing chief executive or an announcement of a specific aircraft contract. The title “lead Boeing business in India” was headline wording; Boeing’s formal title was president of Boeing India.
What Boeing announced
In a New Delhi announcement dated December 13, 2012, Boeing named Kumar president of Boeing India. The appointment took effect the following day, December 14. Boeing described the position as its senior in-country leadership role, spanning the company’s India strategy and business activities rather than command of every Boeing program worldwide.
The original announcement is available from Boeing’s newsroom. Because it is a corporate release, statements about market opportunity and Boeing’s positioning should be understood as the company’s framing of the appointment.

Who was Pratyush “Prat” Kumar?
Immediately before joining Boeing, Kumar was president and CEO of GE Transportation for South Asia. Boeing’s biography also described his earlier responsibility for GE Infrastructure businesses in India, including aviation, transportation, energy, oil and gas, and water.
Career experience
- He founded a biotechnology start-up in Boston before joining GE.
- He worked as a management consultant with McKinsey & Company in Atlanta and Delhi.
- He co-chaired the Federation of Indian Chambers of Commerce and Industry Infrastructure Committee.
- He chaired the American Chamber of Commerce India Infrastructure and Energy Committee.
- He served on The Energy & Resources Institute advisory board.
Education
Boeing said Kumar earned a doctorate in materials manufacturing from the Massachusetts Institute of Technology in 1994 and a Bachelor of Technology degree in mechanical engineering from the Indian Institute of Technology, New Delhi. The announcement did not give a year for the IIT degree; later references to a specific completion year should not be treated as part of Boeing’s original announcement.
What the Boeing India president was expected to do
Boeing listed a broad strategy, coordination and relationship-building remit. Kumar was expected to:
- Lead development of Boeing’s India strategy.
- Implement that strategy across the company’s India activities.
- Coordinate Boeing businesses operating in the country.
- Align priorities among those operations.
- Expand Boeing’s presence and strengthen local relationships and partnerships.
In practical terms, that meant working across commercial aviation, defense, technology, suppliers, services and support. Boeing specifically identified relationships with Indian companies, government agencies, local partners, suppliers, and technology and research institutions. The role therefore combined business development with stakeholder management; it was not described as direct operational control of each aircraft program.

Why India mattered to Boeing in 2012
Boeing presented India as a multi-sector aerospace market, not simply a place to sell airliners. The company pointed to several strands of activity:

Commercial aviation
Boeing referred to its long relationship with India, including the historical connection to Tata Airlines’ operation of DC-3 aircraft. It also said Boeing aircraft were central to India’s domestic and international commercial fleets at that time. Those are statements from Boeing’s 2012 release, not an independently measured fleet-share statistic.
Defense programs
The announcement cited India’s selection of the P-8I for long-range maritime reconnaissance and anti-submarine missions, as well as the acquisition of 10 C-17 Globemaster III strategic transport aircraft. These programs illustrated the defense relationships Boeing wanted its India leadership to develop; the release did not claim that Kumar’s appointment caused either acquisition.
Technology and suppliers
Boeing highlighted its Boeing Research & Technology center in Bangalore, opened in March 2009, along with relationships with Indian suppliers and efforts to pursue technical and business partnerships with Indian companies and institutions.

The company also expected aircraft services and support to grow. Boeing described itself as “uniquely positioned for growth,” an outlook statement made in the announcement rather than an independently validated forecast.
The transition from Dinesh Keskar
Kumar replaced Dinesh Keskar. Boeing said Keskar had returned earlier in 2012 to Boeing Commercial Airplanes in a senior sales leadership role. That wording indicates an internal reassignment, not a departure from Boeing. Shep Hill, then president of Boeing International and senior vice president of Business Development and Strategy, said Kumar brought business leadership experience and knowledge of the Indian market and would build on Keskar’s work.

What happened after the 2012 appointment?
The India presidency later changed hands. Trade-press coverage reported that:
| Date | Development | Source and qualification |
|---|---|---|
| October 2018 | Kumar was selected to lead Boeing’s F-15 fighter-aircraft program in the United States and globally. | SP’s Land Forces appointments archive; later-career context, not part of the 2012 announcement. |
| February 2019 announcement | Boeing announced Salil Gupte as president of Boeing India, effective March 18. | SP’s Naval Forces appointments archive; this establishes that Kumar’s India leadership period had ended by then. |
These reports do not establish Kumar’s complete subsequent employment history or his position as of 2026, so the 2012 announcement should not be written in the present tense as if he currently leads Boeing India.

How to read the appointment
The choice of a former GE Transportation and GE Infrastructure executive with consulting, technology and India-market experience fit Boeing’s stated objective: coordinate a cross-sector country strategy and deepen local partnerships. It does not, by itself, prove that Boeing expected a particular aircraft order, joint venture, manufacturing project or defense contract. The appointment was a leadership change intended to organize and expand Boeing’s India presence across several businesses.
Primary and secondary records
The authoritative record is Boeing’s December 13, 2012 release, “Boeing Appoints Pratyush Kumar to Lead Boeing Business in India.” Contemporary trade coverage also reproduced the announcement, including SP’s MAI, Indian Defence Review, and AviTrader. Those reports confirm circulation of the announcement, while Boeing remains the principal source for the title, dates, biography and responsibilities.
