How to Join Ubuntu: Canonical Careers, Community Contributions, and Ubuntu Pro

Joining Ubuntu can mean a Canonical career, independent community contribution, or professional use of Ubuntu. Here’s how the paths differ and where to begin.

“Joining Ubuntu” can mean applying for a paid job at Canonical, contributing to the Ubuntu project independently, or using Ubuntu and Canonical’s professional services. These are separate paths: you do not need to work for Canonical—or buy a subscription—to contribute to Ubuntu.

Choose what “joining Ubuntu” means for you

Route What you do What to expect
Work for Canonical Apply for a specific advertised role. Paid employment, subject to the role’s location, eligibility, and selection requirements.
Contribute to Ubuntu Help with code, testing, documentation, translation, community work, or other project activity. Usually independent or volunteer participation; there is no single universal application.
Use Ubuntu professionally Deploy Ubuntu and, if appropriate, use Canonical tools or subscriptions. Ubuntu Pro and support are optional services, not prerequisites for using Ubuntu or contributing.

Canonical’s role—and the community’s

Canonical is the publisher of Ubuntu and leads major technical areas, while Ubuntu also has community governance structures and volunteer leaders. The project is neither simply Canonical’s corporate hierarchy nor detached from Canonical’s stewardship. See Ubuntu’s overview and the project governance documentation.

Ubuntu began with version 4.10, “Warty Warthog,” in October 2004. The project invites community projects, suggestions, fixes, and constructive feedback; its project documentation is a useful starting point.

Apply for a Canonical job

Find a role that matches your experience

Canonical advertises jobs across engineering, support engineering, product, sales, marketing, operations, and other functions. Engineering work can touch operating systems, kernels, cloud infrastructure, and security; other roles may focus on customer support, product direction, commercial operations, or communication. Review the actual responsibilities rather than assuming every role is centered on Ubuntu Desktop. Start at Canonical Careers.

Understand the hiring process

  1. Choose an advertised vacancy. Read its responsibilities, requirements, and location or eligibility terms.
  2. Apply through that listing. Canonical says applications may include questions specific to the role.
  3. If selected, follow the assessment plan. Canonical says candidates receive a personalized dashboard describing assessments and interviews.
  4. Talk with people who know the work. Canonical describes applications being routed to a domain expert and a Hiring Lead managing the process from start to finish.

Canonical describes its company as fully distributed and says it has operated that way for more than 20 years. Distributed work can require clear writing, asynchronous communication, independent execution, and collaboration across time zones; it does not mean every job is available in every country. The hiring-process page explains the company’s approach and asks applicants to use their own words in assessments and interviews rather than rely on online aids.

Show evidence, not just enthusiasm

Canonical says it values qualities including initiative, leadership, drive, curiosity, resilience, cognitive ability, and commitment to learning; strong academic performance may also be relevant. These are stated priorities, not a guarantee that every role uses identical criteria. Prepare examples that demonstrate the skills the vacancy calls for, such as:

  • A public code portfolio, merged upstream work, or a maintained project.
  • A reproducible bug report, package fix, build-system change, or useful test.
  • Linux administration or infrastructure-as-code work, with the problem and outcome explained.
  • Technical writing, documentation improvements, or examples of communicating a complex issue clearly.
  • A difficult debugging or deployment problem, including what failed and how you responded.

For support engineering, Canonical identifies work involving Ubuntu, Kubernetes, LXD, OpenStack, MAAS, and other open-source applications. The Support Engineering page offers a sense of that domain; no single list of technologies applies to every job.

Contribute to Ubuntu without being hired

Start with a useful, manageable contribution

  1. Choose an area. Consider documentation, testing, translation, packaging, code, desktop or server work, cloud, hardware, or local community activity.
  2. Read the relevant project guidance. Begin at the Ubuntu project documentation and follow the conventions for the area you choose.
  3. Make a contribution others can review. Improve an unclear instruction, report a bug with reproducible steps, test a change, submit a patch, or help with a local event.
  4. Respond to feedback and keep participating. Review and collaboration are part of the work; one contribution is a start, not a record of sustained involvement.

Simply installing and using Ubuntu is meaningful participation, but a contribution record generally involves work that helps the project or its community—such as fixes, testing, documentation, translations, support, advocacy, or organized collaboration. Local Community teams connect people through discussions, events, and local free-software activity; see the governance documentation.

Build toward Ubuntu Membership if that is your goal

Ubuntu Membership recognizes significant and sustained contributions. The guidance recommends roughly six months of sustained Ubuntu-related work and supporting testimonials, but does not set a rigid minimum period. Membership is recognition of contribution, not a shortcut into a Canonical job. See Ubuntu Membership guidance.

Membership benefits can include Ubuntu Pro for up to 50 systems, voting privileges in certain community processes, an Ubuntu email alias, and recognition within the project. Benefits can change; the member perks page has the current details. They should not be the main reason to contribute.

Understand the commercial side before subscribing

Canonical’s open-source work also serves organizations that need integration, security maintenance, compliance capabilities, lifecycle planning, or engineering support. Those commercial responsibilities can bring customer commitments and release schedules alongside upstream collaboration. Canonical describes its mission as helping people and organizations use open source to develop products quickly and confidently on its careers page.

Ubuntu Pro is optional. It can extend security coverage and provide tools such as Expanded Security Maintenance, Kernel Livepatch, compliance tooling, and Landscape, depending on plan and configuration. Free personal use is available for up to five machines; official Ubuntu Community Members can use it on up to 50 machines, subject to the applicable terms. See Ubuntu Pro and its documentation.

Security maintenance is not the same as technical support. The pricing page separates self-support subscriptions from paid support options. If you need help diagnosing or resolving production incidents, check the scope of the support tier rather than assuming a Pro subscription includes the same service.

Check the Ubuntu release lifecycle

Ubuntu releases a version about every six months. Interim releases receive nine months of updates; LTS releases arrive every two years and receive five years of standard security maintenance. Ubuntu Pro can extend security coverage, and Legacy coverage can extend it further, under the relevant terms.

As of August 18, 2026, Ubuntu 26.04 LTS, “Resolute Raccoon,” released in April 2026, is the current LTS. Its standard security maintenance is listed through May 2031, Ubuntu Pro coverage through May 2036, and Legacy coverage through May 2041. These dates describe different coverage levels, not identical support for every package or configuration. Main and Universe packages, architectures, flavors, cloud images, and applications may have different coverage. Consult the current Ubuntu release cycle and Ubuntu Pro terms for the system you intend to run.

Decide which route fits your goal

  • You want a salary and defined responsibilities: look for a suitable Canonical vacancy and prepare evidence that matches its requirements.
  • You want to learn or help independently: choose a contribution area, follow its guidance, and build a sustained public record.
  • You need longer security coverage or fleet tools: evaluate Ubuntu Pro against your deployment and support needs.
  • You simply want to use Ubuntu: install and use it; neither employment nor a paid subscription is required.

Before accepting a job, assess whether its duties, location eligibility, compensation, and working style fit you. Before subscribing, compare the coverage and support you need with what the plan actually includes. Canonical warns about recruitment fraud: apply through its official careers domain and never pay a registration, hiring, or training fee to obtain a job.
