The M4 can still be a smart buy, but the case depends on the live price of the exact configuration—not a “record-low” label. A July 2025 deal article cited $849 for a 13-inch M4 with 16GB of memory and 256GB of storage; that was a historical offer, not a verified current price. Apple’s M5 announcement and the original M4 deal coverage establish the context.
Quick verdict: Consider the M4 if it is roughly $200–$300 less than an equivalent M5 and its memory and storage fit your needs. The 16GB/256GB version is best for lighter workloads; 16GB/512GB is the safer choice for longer ownership. If the M4’s price is close to the M5’s, the newer model’s 512GB base storage makes it hard to justify the older one.
1. You can get modern Mac performance for less—if the price gap is real
The M4 is a current-era Apple-silicon laptop, not an Intel-era leftover. Its starting configuration has 16GB of unified memory, and it is well suited to everyday work such as browsing, office applications, schoolwork, video calls, and many coding tasks. The value proposition is the discount, not simply the fact that the chip is an M4.
Apple introduced the M4 MacBook Air in March 2025. Its U.S. launch prices were $999 for the 13-inch model and $1,199 for the 15-inch model; those are launch prices, not today’s retailer offers. Apple’s M4 announcement lists the launch configurations and features.

Historical deal coverage later referenced M4 prices as low as $799 and, in some promotions, $749. Those figures are signals that deeper discounts have existed—not confirmed prices for August 2026, nor proof that every size or configuration reached those prices. Historical deal references do not replace checking the live listing.
For an apples-to-apples decision, compare the same screen size, memory, storage, condition, and seller. As an editorial rule of thumb—not a live price report—an M4 roughly $200–$300 below a comparable M5 is worth considering for ordinary productivity. A smaller gap is harder to defend when the M5 has twice the base storage.
2. The fanless, portable design suits quiet everyday work
The MacBook Air’s fanless design runs silently, a practical benefit in libraries, classrooms, meetings, recording spaces, and quiet offices. The 13-inch model favors portability; the 15-inch model gives more room for split-screen work but is larger and launched at a higher price.
Silent does not mean built for unlimited heavy workloads. Long rendering sessions, large software builds, and other sustained demanding tasks can reduce performance as the fanless system manages heat. If that is your routine, compare a MacBook Pro’s active cooling and capabilities rather than assuming an Air is a workstation substitute.

The M4 Air has a 12MP Center Stage camera and a Liquid Retina display. The 13-inch screen measures 13.6 inches diagonally, with 2560×1664 resolution and 500-nit brightness; the 15-inch model has a 15.3-inch display. Apple’s specifications also list a three-microphone array. These features are most useful to people who spend time on video calls, work away from an external monitor, or want a larger built-in workspace. The display is not a high-refresh-rate ProMotion panel.

Apple rates the M4 Air for up to 18 hours of battery life. That is a manufacturer estimate, not a promise that every owner will get a full day on a charge. Brightness, video calls, external displays, applications, wireless conditions, battery health, and other workload factors affect actual runtime. See Apple’s M4 MacBook Air technical specifications and launch details.
4. It can work as a compact two-monitor desk setup
The M4 Air supports up to two external displays in addition to its built-in screen, a useful upgrade for people moving between travel and desk work. The laptop has two Thunderbolt 4/USB-C ports, MagSafe charging, and a 3.5mm headphone jack. A desk with Ethernet, HDMI, USB-A devices, or an SD-card reader may need a compatible dock or adapters, so include that cost in the comparison rather than treating ports as free.
Display support depends on compatible displays, cables, and adapters. Apple’s technical specifications provide the model details.

5. A sufficiently deep clearance discount can beat the M5 on value
The M5 is the more straightforward choice when the price difference is modest or you want its newer platform. Apple lists a 10-core CPU, up-to-10-core GPU, 16GB starting memory, 512GB base storage, Wi-Fi 7, and Bluetooth 6. The M4 starts with 256GB storage and uses Wi-Fi 6E and Bluetooth 5.3. Both generations support up to two external displays alongside the built-in screen and are rated by Apple for up to 18 hours of battery life.
Apple reports that the M5 is up to four times faster than the M4 for certain AI tasks and up to 1.5 times faster for certain Blender ray-tracing workloads. These are Apple’s selected workload comparisons, not claims that the M5 is four times faster in general use. The M5’s U.S. launch price was $1,099 for the 13-inch model and $1,299 for the 15-inch model. Check Apple’s M5 announcement and its current Air specifications for details.

Use the gap between equivalent configurations, not the headline price of the cheapest listing. An M4/256GB deal may look compelling until you compare it with an M5/512GB or add external storage to the older model. The M4/512GB configuration is a more useful comparison for buyers who need that space, but it becomes questionable if its price approaches an M5/512GB.
Choose the configuration that matches how you store and work
16GB memory and 256GB storage
This is the entry configuration to consider when price matters most and most files live in the cloud. Documents, browsing, streaming, and office work can fit this setup. Local photo libraries, video projects, games, virtual machines, development environments, and offline media can consume 256GB quickly. If you routinely keep large files on the laptop, the low initial price may not be the best overall value.
16GB memory and 512GB storage
This is the more balanced M4 choice for buyers who want breathing room for applications and local files. Compare its live price directly with the M5’s 512GB base model; the older chip is most compelling when the M4 retains a meaningful discount.
24GB or 32GB memory
More memory may suit heavier multitasking, larger development projects, or creative applications, but it does not make the Air’s fanless design ideal for every sustained workload. Apple lists configurable M5 memory options of 24GB and 32GB; check Apple’s specifications for current options. Do not assume an M4 configuration is a bargain merely because its base model is discounted.
13-inch or 15-inch
Choose 13 inches when compactness and lower cost matter most. Choose 15 inches if the additional screen area meaningfully reduces the need for an external monitor. The larger model is less convenient to carry, so weigh that trade-off against how often you work at a desk.

Skip the M4 if its compromises cost more than the discount saves
- You need 512GB and the M4/512GB is close in price to the M5/512GB. The M5 includes that storage in its base configuration.
- You depend on sustained professional performance. Long rendering, compilation, 3D work, or local AI use may be better served by a MacBook Pro or another suitable system.
- Your required applications are Windows-only. Check software compatibility before choosing a Mac; virtualization or compatibility tools may not meet every specialist need.
- You need lots of built-in ports or a high-refresh-rate screen. The Air’s two Thunderbolt ports and standard display may not suit those priorities.
- You plan to run multiple virtual machines or large local AI models. Check memory, storage, and application requirements rather than assuming the entry configuration will suffice.
- You prioritize the longest remaining product cycle. The M5 is newer, but Apple does not promise a fixed number of years of macOS support for either model.
Check the deal before you buy
“Record low” is meaningful only for a specific configuration, seller, condition, and date. The previously reported $849 price was for a 13-inch M4 with 16GB memory and 256GB SSD in July 2025; it was described as a record low at that time, not established as the lowest price ever or a live August 2026 offer. Before checkout, verify:
- Exact model and configuration: confirm M4, screen size, memory, and SSD capacity—not an M3 or a different specification.
- Condition and seller: distinguish new from open-box, refurbished, or used, and check who is actually selling the laptop.
- Offer terms: determine whether the price requires a membership, coupon, student status, trade-in, or credit-card offer, and whether the offer remains live.
- Total cost: account for tax, shipping, any needed hub or external SSD, and optional protection coverage.
- Returns and warranty: review the return window and warranty terms for that seller; marketplace listings may differ from Apple’s direct-sale terms.
- M5 comparison: compare the final checkout price with an equivalent M5 configuration, especially if you need 512GB.
For Apple’s official product listings, see Apple’s MacBook Air store page. Availability and configuration options can change; use the live listing rather than relying on historical deal coverage.
Consider a different Mac if the Air is the wrong fit
For basic users whose main priority is a lower-cost Mac, Apple also introduced MacBook Neo in March 2026. Its suitability depends on the applications and workload you need; the available launch source does not establish a current price here. See Apple’s MacBook Neo page and its availability announcement.
For frequent travelers, students, or households where accidental damage would be difficult to absorb, AppleCare+ may be worth comparing with the cost of self-insuring repairs. Coverage, price, deductibles, and eligibility vary by country and product; consult Apple’s Mac support plans. A dock or external SSD is useful only if the M4’s ports or storage actually limit your setup; Apple lists its Mac accessories separately.
