The best iPhone money-making app depends on what you can sell: professional skills, physical labor, transportation, unwanted possessions, shopping activity, or spare time. Upwork and Fiverr can turn expertise into freelance income; Uber, DoorDash, and Instacart pay for driving and delivery; eBay and Mercari turn items into resale proceeds. Ibotta provides savings on purchases you already planned, while Swagbucks offers small rewards—not a replacement for wages.
The shortlist below is for U.S. users. Availability, fees, eligibility, payout timing, and app features change by location and account, so confirm current terms on each platform before committing time or money.

Best apps for skilled or local work
Upwork: best for professional freelance work
Upwork connects clients with writers, designers, programmers, marketers, translators, consultants and administrators. A portfolio and a narrowly defined service improve credibility. Project prices are not take-home pay: subtract the current freelancer service fee, any payment costs, software, proposal and messaging time, and taxes. Check the current fee and withdrawal rules at Upwork Support.
Fiverr: best for fixed-price services
Fiverr lets sellers publish a defined service (“gig”), such as logo design, video editing or resume writing. Start with one deliverable, a realistic deadline and explicit revision limits. Listed prices are reduced by current platform deductions, and client messages or revisions can lower the effective hourly rate. Review seller policies at Fiverr Help; do not offer plagiarized, deceptive or regulated work you are not qualified to perform.
#1 Best Overall
Taskrabbit: best for hands-on local tasks
Taskrabbit matches customers with taskers for assembly, moving help, mounting, cleaning, errands and other services. Availability, registration charges, background screening and categories vary by city. Price the whole job—including travel, parking, tools, supplies and cancellation risk—not only time inside the customer’s home. Follow local licensing rules and use sensible precautions when entering unfamiliar premises; confirm current requirements at Taskrabbit Support.
Best apps for driving, delivery and shopping
Uber Driver: best for rideshare flexibility
Eligible drivers can accept rides and, depending on market and account, other driving or delivery opportunities. Vehicle, age, insurance, background-check and instant-pay rules are geography-specific. Gross app receipts omit fuel or charging, maintenance, depreciation, insurance, cleaning, financing and repositioning miles. Compare net earnings per total work hour and mile using Uber’s driver help, not a universal hourly promise.
DoorDash Dasher: best for delivery without passengers
DoorDash can suit short work blocks where order density is adequate. Restaurant delays, apartment access, parking, tips, distance and unpaid waiting determine the real return. “Earn by Time,” “Earn per Offer,” scheduling and cash-out rules can change, so verify them at Dasher Help. Record mileage from the first work-related trip through the final drop-off.

- Ideal for a bookworm
- Compact for travelling
Instacart Shopper: best for grocery batches
U.S. signup materials list age 18 or older, legal work authorization, a reliable vehicle, a compatible smartphone and the ability to lift up to 40 pounds without accommodation. Instacart says full-service shoppers are paid per batch, keep 100% of customer tips and may cash out in as little as two hours, subject to eligibility and terms (shopper signup). Treat that as a platform claim, not a universal processing guarantee. Evaluate every batch by item count, substitutions, estimated shopping time, distance, stairs, parking and tip. Consumer service fees are not shopper tips (Instacart’s fee explanation).

Best apps for selling possessions
eBay: best for broad resale reach
eBay is useful for collectibles, electronics, branded goods, parts and other items with established demand. Search completed sales, not merely active listings. Net proceeds equal sale price plus buyer-paid shipping, minus marketplace fees, shipping labels, supplies, refunds and returns. Photograph defects, serial numbers and accessories; retain shipment proof and check current category fees at eBay Selling Help.
Mercari: best for simpler casual resale
Mercari’s mobile-first workflow suits clothing, household goods, electronics and collectibles. Your result depends on current seller and payment rules, shipping, packaging, negotiation and possible returns. Confirm terms at the Mercari Help Center, and keep payment and communication on-platform so buyer and seller protections remain available. Selling existing possessions is active work, not passive income.
Rank #3
Best apps for savings and small rewards
Ibotta: cashback on purchases you already intend to make
Ibotta can reduce grocery and household costs through retailer, receipt, loyalty-account or offer-specific rebates. Activate the offer, satisfy its conditions and submit receipts within the stated window. Check current cash-out minimums and payment methods at Ibotta Help. Never buy an unnecessary product merely to obtain a rebate; cashback is savings, not wages.
Swagbucks: low-commitment rewards, not a job
Swagbucks combines surveys, shopping offers, searches, games and promotions. Screen-outs, tracking failures, delayed credit, geographic limits and restrictive terms are common reasons the effective rate is low. Track every qualifying and troubleshooting minute, then compare the reward with that total time. Verify redemption minimums, identity checks and payout methods at Swagbucks Help.

How to measure whether an app is worthwhile
Use net value rather than promotional gross figures. Consider realistic earning ceiling, local availability, startup cost, payout transparency, flexibility, safety, privacy and ease of exit. A practical weighting is 25% net earning potential, 20% availability and consistency, 15% startup cost, 15% payout transparency, 10% flexibility, 10% safety and privacy, and 5% ease of use.

Driving and delivery formula
net hourly return = (gross earnings − direct expenses − vehicle-cost reserve) ÷ total work time
Track online time, active jobs, all work-related miles, fuel or charging, parking, tolls, maintenance reserve, insurance implications, tips, bonuses, waiting, loading and unpaid return miles.
Freelance checklist
- Define the deliverable and acceptance standard.
- Set a deadline and revision limit.
- Estimate production, calls, messages and platform administration.
- Subtract platform and payment fees before accepting.
- Confirm payment protection and dispute rules.
- Keep briefs, approvals, invoices and final files.
Resale checklist
- Check completed sales and condition-adjusted prices.
- Photograph labels, defects, serial numbers and included accessories.
- Weigh and measure the packed item.
- Calculate fees, shipping, supplies and likely returns.
- Keep proof of shipment and delivery.
Rewards calculation
A $1 reward taking 25 minutes is approximately $2.40 per hour before data and opportunity costs; a $1 reward taking two minutes is approximately $30 per hour. Include screening, failed tracking, disputes and cash-out time in the denominator.

How to check that a money-making app is legitimate
- Use the official Apple App Store or the provider’s official signup page.
- Confirm a real company, current support center, privacy policy, terms and dispute process.
- Understand earning mechanics, fees, withdrawal minimums and processing times before working.
- Do not pay a large upfront amount to unlock ordinary tasks.
- Reject guaranteed, risk-free or unusually high-return claims, cryptocurrency deposits, gift-card purchases and recruitment requirements.
- Check whether requested location, demographic or device data is reasonable for the task.
- Test a small withdrawal before investing substantial time or money.
- Delete unused apps and revoke unnecessary permissions.
Apple says App Store apps are reviewed for guideline, privacy, security and content compliance, but availability is not proof that an opportunity is profitable or risk-free (Apple’s transparency report; review guidelines).
U.S. taxes and records
The IRS treats driving, delivery, errands, online selling and professional services as examples of gig work. Report gig income even when it is part-time, temporary, paid in cash or not accompanied by a tax form. Net self-employment earnings of $400 or more generally trigger a filing requirement, and independent contractors may need estimated tax payments. See the IRS Gig Economy Tax Center and its recordkeeping and tax guidance.
- Record gross receipts, dates and platform statements.
- Keep contemporaneous mileage records for driving and delivery.
- Save receipts for eligible business expenses and separate personal costs.
- Reserve money for taxes rather than treating every payout as spendable.
- Consider professional advice when income is substantial, recurring or mixed with benefits eligibility.
Tax rules change. The IRS’s current updates, including conditional provisions for 2026, are at Filing tips and updates for gig-economy workers.
