Sony’s black WH-1000XM6 over-ear noise-cancelling headphones are listed at $398 from Sony, down from the company’s $459.99 reference price—a $61.99, roughly 13.5% saving before tax. That is one of the model’s most common sale prices, but it is not the lowest price identified: Amazon reached $378 during Prime Day. Buy at $398 if you need Sony’s current flagship now; wait if you are specifically chasing the historical low.
This deal concerns the over-ear WH-1000XM6/B, not Sony’s separate WF-1000XM6 true-wireless earbuds. Prices, colors, inventory and delivery estimates can change by location, so confirm the live checkout total.
Where the WH-1000XM6 are discounted
The strongest currently documented official offer is Sony’s own store. Other retailers have shown nearly identical pricing, although comparison prices and stock differ.
| Retailer | Observed price | Displayed reference price | Approximate saving | Qualification |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Sony direct | $398 | $459.99 | $61.99 | Black WH-1000XM6/B; Sony advertises up to 5% back in My Sony points, subject to eligibility. |
| Best Buy | About $398–$399.99 in recent listings | $458 | About $58–$60 | Price, color availability and pickup vary by store and ZIP code. |
| Target | $399.99 | $458.99 | $59 | Black model was shown in stock on the retrieved listing; local fulfillment can differ. |
| Amazon | $398 in recent coverage | $459.99 | $61.99 | Check that the listing is new and sold by a reputable seller; marketplace offers may have different warranty and return terms. |
Sony’s $459.99 figure is the manufacturer reference used for the $61.99 saving. Best Buy and Target display slightly different comparison values, which reflects retailer pricing conventions rather than a different headphone model.

Is $398 really the best price?
That depends on what “best” means:
- Best verified official price now: $398 at Sony direct.
- Common recurring sale price: approximately $398 across major retailers.
- Lowest price identified in recent history: $378 at Amazon during a 2026 Prime Day promotion.
Trackalacker’s history shows repeated drops to $398, a $378 low recorded June 23, 2026, and returns toward regular pricing between promotions. TechRadar reported the $378 Prime Day price; later coverage described $398 as $30 above that record low. Therefore, $398 is a strong, repeatable discount—not an all-time low.
What you get for about $400
Sony lists up to 30 hours of battery life, adaptive active noise cancellation and call-quality processing on the WH-1000XM6. The headphones use 12 microphones and Sony’s QN3 noise-cancelling processor; Best Buy’s product information repeats Sony’s claim that QN3 is seven times faster than the QN1 used in the WH-1000XM5. Sony also markets sound tuned with mastering engineers, while specialist coverage notes the redesigned folding case and travel-friendly design. See the Sony specifications and Best Buy listing for the manufacturer claims. Sony’s “best noise cancellation” language is marketing, not an independently universal ranking.

Should you buy at $398 or wait?
Buy at $398 if you need them now
- You want Sony’s current flagship over-ear headphones rather than an older generation.
- You regularly travel, commute or work in noisy spaces and prioritize noise cancellation.
- You value the folding design, included case, call features and Sony’s app ecosystem.
- You can absorb roughly $400 plus sales tax and do not want to wait for an uncertain promotion.
Wait if the lowest possible price matters most
The model has moved between full price and sale levels, and $378 has happened during a major shopping event. If you can wait, set a price alert and target $378 or less. Around $460, waiting generally makes more sense unless you need the headphones immediately.
Use a simple price threshold
- $378 or less: exceptional documented price, assuming a new unit from a reputable seller.
- $398: good and reasonably buyable for a current flagship.
- About $460: usually a wait-and-watch price.
XM6 versus the cheaper XM5
The WH-1000XM5 remains the value option when its price is roughly $248–$250 in promotions. Recent TechRadar deal coverage cited $248 at Amazon, while Target’s related products showed $249.99; both prices are volatile.

- PREMIUM NOISE CANCELLATION: Two processors control 8 microphones for unprecedented noise cancellation. With Auto NC Optimizer, noise canceling is automatically optimized based on your wearing conditions and environment.
- MAGNIFICENT SOUND: Engineered to perfection with the new Integrated Processor V1.
- CRYSTAL CLEAR HANDS-FREE CALLING: 4 beamforming microphones, precise voice pickup, and advanced audio signal processing.
- LONG BATTERY LIFE: Up to 30-hour battery life with quick charging (3 min charge for 3 hours of playback).
- ULTRA-COMFORTABLE: Lightweight design with soft fit leather.
Choose the XM6 for the newest processing, redesigned hardware and current flagship status. Choose the XM5 when saving roughly $150 is more important and you are comfortable buying the previous generation. XM5 owners should upgrade only if the newer design, processing or feature set addresses a specific need; the discount alone does not make an upgrade universally worthwhile.
Checks to make before paying
- Confirm the item is the black WH-1000XM6/B and is listed as new, not refurbished, open-box or used.
- On Amazon, Best Buy or other marketplaces, verify the actual seller, warranty coverage and return policy.
- Check color-specific pricing: midnight blue, silver and sand pink may not match the black model’s discount.
- Recheck the price, delivery date and stock after entering your ZIP code; pickup and shipping vary regionally.
- Include sales tax and any membership cost in your total. Financing’s monthly figure is not an additional discount.
Bottom line for shoppers
At $398, the Sony WH-1000XM6 are back at a substantial discount and are a sensible buy for someone who wants the current flagship today. They are not at their documented lowest price, so patient, price-sensitive shoppers should wait for another major sale or a return to $378. If value is the priority, the discounted WH-1000XM5 is the more economical Sony choice.
