Historical launch information: Google opened U.S. preorders for the Pixel 8 and Pixel 8 Pro on October 4, 2023. The Pixel 8 started at $699 and the Pixel 8 Pro at $999; both went on sale October 12. The original preorder offers have expired and should not be treated as available now. Google’s launch announcement confirmed the prices and dates.
Pixel 8 and Pixel 8 Pro launch prices and preorder gifts
The figures below are U.S. launch details from October 2023, not verified 2026 prices or current availability. Starting prices were before tax and any optional storage upgrade, accessories, protection plan, financing costs or service-plan requirements.
| Model | U.S. starting price at launch | Preorder gift reported at launch | Best fit |
|---|---|---|---|
| Pixel 8 | $699 | Pixel Buds Pro, according to contemporary retailer coverage; seller terms applied. | Buyers seeking a smaller, less expensive Pixel with the main camera experience. |
| Pixel 8 Pro | $999 | Pixel Watch 2, according to Google’s announcement; offer terms applied. | Buyers who value a larger display and more capable camera system. |
The two launch prices were each $100 higher than the previous generation’s starting prices, according to contemporary preorder coverage. That comparison does not establish what either phone costs today.
The gift offers were not the same for both models, and the Pixel 8 offer is supported here by retailer reporting rather than Google’s announcement. Promotions could vary by market and seller. A promotional accessory is not a direct reduction in the phone’s price: its value depends on whether you want it and meet the offer’s conditions.

Where buyers could preorder
At launch, buyers could order through the Google Store and participating retail or carrier partners. Contemporary coverage listed Google Store, Best Buy and supported carriers as options. Availability, eligible configurations and offer terms depended on the seller and market; the historical launch information does not verify any present-day inventory or deal.
For a purchase, compare the full checkout cost rather than only a monthly-payment headline. An unlocked phone bought directly and a carrier-financed phone are different commitments. A carrier offer may depend on a new line, a qualifying plan or bill credits over time. Google Fi was another purchase route for customers considering its wireless service, but current phone promotions and eligibility are not established here.

What distinguished the Pixel 8 from the Pixel 8 Pro
Pixel 8: smaller and less expensive
The Pixel 8 had a 6.2-inch Actua display and was the lower-cost option. Google described it as having an updated main camera and an ultrawide camera with Macro Focus. It suits buyers who want the core Pixel camera experience without paying for the Pro model’s telephoto camera, larger display and Pro camera controls. Its launch gift, as reported by retailers, was Pixel Buds Pro.
Pixel 8 Pro: more camera flexibility
The Pixel 8 Pro added a telephoto camera, a larger ultrawide camera with Macro Focus, autofocus on the front camera and Pro Controls, according to Google’s camera announcement. It is the more natural choice for people who use telephoto framing or want manual camera controls, and for those who prefer a larger phone. Google announced Pixel Watch 2 as the Pro preorder gift.

- Pixel 8 is the helpful phone engineered by Google; the new Google Tensor G3 chip is custom-designed with Google AI for cutting-edge photo and video features and smarter ways to help[1]
- Unlocked Android 5G phone gives you the flexibility to change carriers and choose your own data plan[2]; it works with Google Fi, Verizon, T-Mobile, AT&T, and other major carriers
- Google Pixel 8 has a fully upgraded camera with advanced image processing to reveal vivid colors and striking details; and now with Macro Focus, even the smallest subjects can become spectacular images
- The 6.2-inch Pixel 8 Actua display is super sharp, with rich, vivid colors; it’s fast and responsive for smoother gaming, scrolling, and moving between apps[3,4]
- Pixel’s Adaptive Battery can last over 24 hours; when Extreme Battery Saver is turned on, it can last up to 72 hours[5]; and it charges faster than ever[6]
The practical choice is therefore not just a $300 launch-price gap: it is a smaller, lower-cost phone versus a larger, more camera-oriented one. Do not choose the Pro solely because a smartwatch may appear more valuable than earbuds; the bundle matters only if you would use the accessory.
What buyers were paying for beyond the cameras
Both phones used Google’s Tensor G3 processor and introduced AI-assisted photo and video features, improved Face Unlock and a Titan M2 security chip. The Pixel 8 series also came with Google’s stated commitment to seven years of Android OS upgrades, security updates, Feature Drops and related software support, extending into 2030. See Google’s support announcement for the commitment.

Google positioned Tensor G3 around on-device AI and machine learning. That explains the emphasis on AI features, but it is not independent evidence that either phone beats rival flagships in general processing speed, graphics, battery life or heat management. Google also described some capabilities, including Video Boost, as arriving later rather than being available at launch; see its Canadian launch announcement. Regional announcements and offers should not be assumed to match the U.S. ones.
Independent reader supportYour contribution helps us test, update, and keep practical guides available for everyone. How to judge whether a preorder gift was worthwhile
- You already own comparable earbuds or a smartwatch: The corresponding gift may add little value to you, even if it has a retail price.
- You would buy the accessory anyway: A qualifying bundle could make the package more attractive, subject to the seller’s terms.
- You prefer a lower phone price: A gift is not equivalent to an unconditional discount. Compare the actual checkout total and any direct price reduction available at the time.
- You are buying through a carrier: Check whether the promotion requires a plan, new line or continued service, and compare the full commitment rather than just the monthly payment.
For any promotion, the relevant terms include the order deadline, qualifying model and configuration, whether the gift is added automatically or must be claimed, gift inventory, shipping, and what happens to the gift if the phone is returned or canceled. Those details were seller-specific; the historical sources do not establish one universal set of rules.

Checklist before placing an order
- Confirm the country, currency and seller: U.S. launch prices and gifts do not apply automatically elsewhere.
- Choose the storage capacity and color you actually want, and verify that the specific configuration is in stock.
- Decide between an unlocked purchase and carrier financing; check plan requirements, bill-credit timing and any service commitment.
- Review trade-in terms. An estimate may change after the old phone is inspected, and the timing of the credit can vary.
- Check the estimated shipping date separately from the general retail-release date.
- Read the return policy and how returning the phone affects any promotional accessory.
- Budget for tax, a case and screen protection, and check whether you need a charger. These costs are separate from the advertised starting price.
- If upgrading from a Pixel 7 or Pixel 7 Pro, weigh the specific camera or software features you want against the cost of keeping your current phone or buying a discounted prior-generation model.
Which model made more sense?
The Pixel 8 was the more straightforward fit for buyers prioritizing size and launch price who did not need telephoto photography or Pro Controls. The Pixel 8 Pro made more sense for camera enthusiasts who wanted those features and preferred the larger format. The best choice depended on which capabilities—and, at launch, which accessory—would provide real value to the buyer, not just the apparent value of the bundle.
