Samsung’s “up to $900” Galaxy S22 trade-in offer was a real U.S. promotion in March 2022—not a current guaranteed price. The maximum was tied to selected phones and a qualifying purchase; it was checkout credit, not cash for an old device. Whether it was a good deal depended on the replacement phone’s net price and what you could otherwise get for your trade-in.
What Samsung offered toward the Galaxy S22 in March 2022
Droid Life reported on March 31, 2022, that Samsung was offering up to $900 in trade-in credit toward selected Galaxy S22-series purchases. Its examples show that the maximum applied to a Galaxy Z Fold3, while other recent premium phones received less. The offer was a historical, promotion-specific snapshot, not a standing Samsung price. Droid Life’s March 2022 report
| Trade-in phone | Historical credit cited | Qualification |
|---|---|---|
| Galaxy Z Fold3 | Up to $900 | Full cited maximum toward the S22 Ultra; the report also described high values toward the S22+. |
| Galaxy Note20 Ultra | $850 | Historical promotional credit toward an S22 Ultra-class purchase. |
| Galaxy S21 Ultra | $850 or $700 | $850 toward the S22 Ultra; $700 toward the base S22, according to the report. |
| Galaxy S20 Ultra | $825 | Historical promotional credit. |
| Galaxy S21+ | $700 | Historical promotional credit. |
The same report said an S22 Ultra could cost as little as $349 and an S22+ as little as $99 after eligible trade-in credit, based on the purchase configurations in that promotion. Those example totals are not general prices: they depend on the qualifying device, model, and checkout offer, and do not establish taxes or financing costs for every buyer.
Which Galaxy S22 model made the most sense?
The biggest trade-in number did not automatically make the Ultra the best purchase. Compare the amount due after credit with the phone you actually want to use; a large credit against a more expensive model may still leave a higher net cost.

| Model | What distinguished it | What to weigh |
|---|---|---|
| Galaxy S22 | The smallest and least expensive model in the series. | Samsung’s cited promotion did not always give it the same credit as the larger models: an S21 Ultra, for example, was listed at $700 toward the base S22 versus $850 toward the S22 Ultra. |
| Galaxy S22+ | A larger-screen option between the base phone and Ultra. | The 2022 report described unusually high trade-in values for it, sometimes matching those toward the Ultra. It argued the larger battery made it a practical alternative to the base phone; that was an editorial assessment, not a comparative battery test. |
| Galaxy S22 Ultra | The premium model, with an integrated S Pen and more extensive camera hardware. | It carried the strongest headline offer, but its higher original price means the final cost—not the credit alone—is the useful comparison. |
Check storage, size, camera needs, and S Pen use before treating a discounted upgrade as a bargain. If you already own a Note-series phone and use its pen, the Ultra is the closest fit; if you do not need its premium features, a lower-priced model may be the more economical choice.
Why the credit looked unusually generous—and what it was worth
Samsung applied eligible trade-in credit to the new-phone purchase at checkout. That immediate reduction avoided listing a phone, negotiating a sale, or waiting for a separate payment. The promotion also assigned high values to several recent premium Galaxy models, and the S22+ could receive credit close to the Ultra’s in the cited examples.
Rank #2
- The S22 Ultra combines the strengths of the S‑series and the legacy of the Note lineage by including a built‑in S Pen with ultra‑low latency. That means you can write, sketch, annotate PDFs, control media, or even take photos with the pen — essentially turning the phone into a productivity and creativity tool beyond ordinary smartphones.
But $900 was not the cash market value of a Fold3. It was conditional purchase credit, available only with a qualifying Samsung transaction and subject to the trade-in process. To compare options, calculate the replacement phone’s cost after credit, then compare the net benefit against realistic private-sale proceeds or a carrier offer—including any conditions attached to those alternatives.
Samsung trade-in, private sale, or carrier promotion?
- Samsung direct trade-in: Best suited to someone already buying a qualifying Galaxy who values a simple transaction and whose displayed credit beats plausible resale proceeds. The credit is linked to the purchase and can be adjusted if the device fails inspection.
- Private sale: Worth checking if you want cash, do not plan to buy another Samsung, or believe your device will sell for more. It requires finding a buyer, accurately describing condition, and handling payment and delivery.
- Carrier promotion: Compare the total benefit with the plan and installment obligations. A large advertised amount may arrive as monthly bill credits and can depend on staying with the carrier for the promotion term; it is not the same as an immediate Samsung checkout discount.
- Samsung standalone trade-in: Samsung says its standalone route is operated by Likewize and is separate from buying a new mobile device. Its quote is a different product from promotional purchase credit. Samsung’s U.S. trade-in information and Likewize’s Samsung trade-in portal

What can reduce or cancel a trade-in credit?
Samsung’s U.S. eligibility guidance says a device generally needs to power on and hold a charge, avoid unexpected shutdowns, have a working display without black spots or dead pixels, have functioning cameras, be factory-reset, meet the eligible-model rules, and not appear on its banned-device list. Some promotions may accept cracked devices for a reduced amount; that is not the full-condition value. Confirm the current offer and requirements before checkout. Samsung’s trade-in FAQ
After receiving the qualifying purchase, Samsung’s current guaranteed-trade-in terms specify a 15-day window to send the old device. If it is not sent, Samsung may charge back the credit. If it arrives but fails inspection, the stated terms allow a chargeback minus $25. Rejected-device return options and response deadlines depend on the applicable terms, so read the notice and act promptly. Samsung’s current trade-in terms

How to prepare and ship the old phone
- Confirm the offer and deadline. Save the trade-in estimate, eligible device details, and shipping instructions. For a current guaranteed trade-in, use the deadline stated in the terms for your order.
- Back up your data. Preserve photos, messages, authenticator access, and other information you need before wiping the phone.
- Remove access locks and accounts. Sign out of Google and Samsung accounts and disable device tracking or anti-theft locks so the phone can be inspected and activated.
- Document its condition. Photograph the front, back, sides, IMEI, and powered-on state; a short video can also record basic operation. Documentation may help resolve a dispute, but it does not guarantee acceptance.
- Remove personal items. Take out the SIM and microSD card, if present. Samsung says ordinary accessories such as cases, cables, and chargers are not needed and may not be returned.
- Factory-reset and ship. Reset only after confirming your backup, then follow Samsung’s label and packaging instructions and keep proof of shipment.
What S22 trade-in values mean now
The March 2022 figures should not be used as a current quote. Samsung says eligible devices and trade-in amounts can change, and its live U.S. consumer offer depends on the selected new device, the trade-in model, condition, and current promotion. Check the consumer calculator for your exact transaction rather than assuming an older maximum still applies.
Samsung’s accessible Business comparison table lists baseline credits of $95 for the Galaxy S22, $119 for the S22+, and $178 for the S22 Ultra. Those are business or bulk trade-in figures, not evidence of a consumer promotional offer and not directly comparable to the 2022 consumer promotion. Samsung Business trade-in comparison
