Yes, the warning was real—but it referred to the standalone Google Pay app in the United States, and the date was June 4, 2024. Google Wallet now handles stored cards and tap-to-pay purchases. Google Pay still appears at supported online checkouts. The old U.S. app’s send, request, and receive-money features ended, but Google says remaining Google Pay funds can still be withdrawn.
What actually changed
Google announced a U.S. product consolidation on February 22, 2024. The standalone U.S. Google Pay app stopped being available for use on June 4, 2024. This was not a shutdown of every Google payment service. Google’s announcement said the change applied to the U.S. app; Google Pay apps in India and Singapore were not affected by that announcement.
| Function | Status now |
|---|---|
| Tap-to-pay in stores | Available through Google Wallet |
| Google Pay at online checkout | Still available where the merchant supports it |
| Cards, tickets and passes | Managed in Google Wallet |
| Sending, requesting or receiving money in the old U.S. app | Discontinued June 4, 2024 |
| Adding money to a Google Pay balance | Discontinued |
| Withdrawing an existing Google Pay balance | Still available under Google’s current guidance |
| Old in-app offers and deals | Removed from the U.S. app |
What to use for everyday payments
Set up Google Wallet
- Install or open Google Wallet on a supported Android phone.
- Check that your payment card appears. If it does not, add it again and complete any issuer verification.
- Turn on NFC.
- If Android asks, choose Google Pay as the default contactless-payment app.
- Unlock the phone and hold it near the store terminal.
Google’s current setup guidance lists Android 9 or newer, current Google Play services, a supported country and payment method, and NFC for contactless payments. Wallet may not work on rooted phones and does not support work profiles; use a supported personal profile. See Google’s device and setup requirements and its Wallet feature guidance.
Cards and passes previously added with Google Pay should generally appear in Wallet, but verify them. A card may require verification again, and some passes, transit credentials, digital IDs or keys depend on the issuer, device and country. Payment methods can also be managed through Google Wallet on the web.

How to withdraw a remaining Google Pay balance
Your balance was not automatically erased when the app retired. Google currently says there is no deadline or time limit to withdraw remaining funds, although availability can depend on your account, location, identity checks and linked payment method. This balance is different from a Google Play balance, a bank card account, a retailer gift card or a loyalty account.
Website method
- Go to wallet.google.com and sign in to the Google Account that held the balance.
- Select Payment methods.
- Choose Money in Google Pay or Google Pay balance.
- Select Transfer out, enter the amount and choose the linked bank account.
- Select Transfer out again to submit.
Google says a bank transfer generally arrives within one to five business days. Its current guidance also says transfer to an eligible linked debit card may be available. Follow Google’s withdrawal instructions.

Wallet app method
- Open Google Wallet.
- Tap the balance or profile button.
- Select Transfer out.
- Follow the prompts for an eligible linked bank account or debit card.
Labels can vary by account, device and Google’s interface. The supported action is to withdraw the money; it is not an ordinary card balance that you move into Wallet for spending.
If “Transfer out” is missing
- Confirm you are using the Google Account that held the funds.
- Try wallet.google.com rather than only the app.
- Check that an eligible bank account or debit card is linked.
- Make sure the name and address in your Google Payments profile match the bank or card issuer.
- Review account, transfer and identity-verification limits.
- Try another eligible payment method, then contact Google if the account is suspended or unsupported.
Google notes that a payment method may need attention if it is associated with more than five Google Pay profiles or if more than five payment methods are attached to the payments profile. See Google’s current balance guidance.

The separate 2026 Balance Card change
Google says the virtual Google Pay Balance Card was removed as a payment method on June 22, 2026. That is separate from the June 4, 2024 app retirement. According to Google, the later change affects the card-payment feature, not the ability to withdraw remaining funds. The balance and transaction-history guidance is at Google Pay balance help and Google’s transfer instructions.
Sending money to friends and family
Google Wallet did not replace the former U.S. Google Pay peer-to-peer service. You cannot use Wallet to restore the old send, request or receive-money functions. Choose another service that both parties can use, such as Venmo, PayPal, Cash App or Zelle. Compare recipient availability, bank compatibility, transfer limits, identity requirements, speed, fees and fraud protections; current terms vary by provider.

Offers, rewards and other balances
Offers and deals from the U.S. Google Pay app were removed. Google directed users to deal destinations in Google Search rather than promising the old in-app experience in Wallet. Bank-issued credit-card rewards, retailer loyalty cards stored in Wallet, Google Play balances and gift cards are separate products and are not the same as a Google Pay balance.
Who was affected
The retirement applied to the U.S. standalone app. It did not close a bank-issued debit or credit card, cancel cards saved to a Google Account, shut down Google Wallet, or end Google Pay at every online merchant or in every country. Feature availability remains dependent on country, issuer, device and account.
