T-Mobile launched it on June 28, 2015, with an 18-month lease term. You paid to use an eligible phone, could exchange it under the applicable upgrade rules, and ultimately had to return it or exercise a purchase option. As of August 18, 2026, the program appears to be a legacy service closed to ordinary new enrollment, although existing customers may still have rights under their individual leases.
What JUMP! On Demand actually was
Under JUMP! On Demand, T-Mobile retained the ownership interest in the device unless you bought it under the contract. The wireless service plan and the device lease were separate obligations, even though both appeared on the same bill.
The original structure was an 18-month lease. T-Mobile described the phone as something you could return or purchase at upgrade or lease end, rather than an installment loan that automatically transferred ownership after the final payment. See T-Mobile’s launch announcement and later corporate description: launch terms and 2015 annual report.
The basic flow
- Choose an eligible device and sign the lease.
- Pay the lease charge, taxes and any required amount due at signing.
- Use the phone while meeting the agreement’s eligibility and account requirements.
- Upgrade by returning the old device under the applicable exchange rules, or reach lease end.
- At lease end, return the phone or pay the contract’s purchase option to keep it.
What appeared on the monthly bill
The lease payment was not your complete wireless bill. Your total could include:

T-Mobile’s June 2015 launch example advertised an iPhone 6 at $0 down and $15 per month for 18 months. That was a promotional, credit-qualified example tied to an eligible trade-in and other conditions, not a current price or a universal $0-down offer. Pricing varied with device, storage, credit, promotion and trade-in terms. The launch announcement also said the upgrade flexibility was included rather than adding the regular $10-per-month JUMP! fee; its $8-per-month protection example was separate and historical.
Do not confuse that lease product with later JUMP! benefits attached to equipment installment plans (EIP). Current T-Mobile materials focus on EIP-based benefits: T-Mobile’s current JUMP page.
How an upgrade worked
A historical JUMP! On Demand exchange normally required selecting an eligible new phone and returning the leased phone for inspection. T-Mobile’s 2015 FAQ directed customers to a participating store for a “three-point check-up” and warned that two device payments could appear until the old phone was processed: T-Mobile FAQ.
- Confirm that your account, lease and desired device qualify.
- Select the new device and review its separate price, down payment and promotion.
- Back up the old phone, remove account locks and erase personal data.
- Have the old phone inspected and obtain proof of the handoff.
- Confirm that the old lease is closed before assuming its charges have stopped.
An exchange is not the same as an ordinary trade-in. A trade-in usually creates credit toward a purchase; a JUMP! On Demand exchange primarily resolves the old lease through its return rules. Prior lease payments generally did not become cash or equity simply because the phone was returned.

How often could you upgrade?
The answer changed over the program’s life and depended on the contract, device and account.
| Period | Published description | Qualification |
|---|---|---|
| June 2015 launch | Up to three exchanges in 12 months | Launch-era advertising and eligibility rules: T-Mobile announcement |
| Later company filings | Upgrade up to once per month | Program description, not a guarantee for every historical lease: 2017 filing and 2019 filing |
Inventory, account standing, device eligibility, promotions and the wording of your lease could limit an otherwise advertised frequency. Use your signed agreement and T-Mobile’s account-specific answer rather than assume that “monthly upgrades” applied to every customer.
What happened after 18 months?
Return the phone
You could return the device if it met the lease’s condition and return requirements. An accepted return avoided the purchase amount, but it did not give you ownership or refund the lease payments already made.
Upgrade
You could turn in the current device and start a new lease or other device agreement if eligible. The new agreement had its own price, credits, down payment and term.

Buy the phone
You could pay the purchase option stated in your contract. T-Mobile said the original structure brought total payments to the phone’s retail price when the final purchase payment was made. The actual buyout could vary with device, retail price, down payment, trade-in credits, contract version and remaining term. The authoritative figure is the purchase option shown in your lease documents or current account, not a generic formula.
For example, if a particular contract required 18 lease payments and then listed a $240 purchase option, you would return the phone, upgrade if eligible, or pay $240 to keep it. That illustration does not predict any customer’s actual amount.
Early return, cancellation and switching carriers
A JUMP! On Demand lease was not automatically a month-to-month rental that you could end whenever you wished by handing back the phone. The launch terms described return at upgrade or lease end and said that canceling wireless service could make remaining lease payments due: T-Mobile launch terms.
- Voluntary cancellation or switching carriers: the device obligation did not disappear with service cancellation; remaining payments could be accelerated under the contract.
- Returning after cancellation: follow the account’s payoff and return instructions. A later return is not automatically a lease closure.
- Nonpayment or involuntary termination: collection, return and payoff consequences are contract-specific.
- Unlocked use: network compatibility and unlocking do not erase an unpaid lease or purchase option.
Before attempting a standalone early return, ask T-Mobile in writing whether your lease permits it, whether payments continue, and whether a purchase option is required.

Using a separate trade-in promotion
Because the leased phone was not automatically yours, an independent trade-in offer could require a payoff first. In its 2016 iPhone 7 FAQ, T-Mobile said JUMP! On Demand customers wanting a separate trade-up offer had to pay the remaining lease and residual or purchase amount, then own the phone before trading it in: T-Mobile’s iPhone 7 FAQ.
That creates three different transactions:
- Lease return: resolves the lease under its return rules.
- JUMP! On Demand exchange: returns the old device and starts a new agreement.
- Payoff and ownership: may be required before using a separate trade-in promotion.
Condition and return checklist
Historical descriptions required a phone in good working condition and subject to inspection. Exact cosmetic standards belong to the applicable lease or current T-Mobile policy. Before surrendering a device:
- Confirm that it powers on and functions normally.
- Check the display, buttons, cameras, charging, connectivity and biometric features.
- Remove Apple Activation Lock, Google account protection and other security locks.
- Make a backup, sign out and erase all personal data.
- Ensure it is not reported lost or stolen.
- Photograph its condition and record the IMEI or serial number.
- Obtain a dated receipt or tracking record showing the handoff.
If billing continues after return
- Keep the receipt, tracking number, photographs and IMEI record.
- Ask T-Mobile to confirm in writing whether the lease was accepted and closed.
- Check whether the device failed inspection or the billing cycle crossed before processing.
- Dispute continued charges with the documentation and escalate through customer care if necessary.
A cracked, nonfunctional or lost phone may fail return requirements. Protection or insurance may help with repair or replacement, but does not automatically erase the lease or purchase option.

| Question | JUMP! On Demand lease | EIP financing |
|---|---|---|
| Do payments automatically create ownership? | No; ownership required a purchase option. | Generally yes after the financed balance is paid, subject to the agreement. |
| What happens at the end? | Return, upgrade if eligible, or buy. | Keep the device after payoff. |
| Can you use an independent trade-in? | May require paying off and buying the phone first. | Depends on payoff status and promotion. |
| If you leave T-Mobile | Lease obligations may remain or accelerate. | The remaining financed balance generally remains due. |
Leasing could suit someone who changed phones frequently, kept devices in returnable condition and valued upgrades over ownership. It was a poor fit for long-term owners, frequent carrier switchers, independent resellers or anyone likely to damage or lose a phone. The financial result depended on upfront costs, monthly charges, buyout amount, credits, upgrade frequency, resale value, damage and time with T-Mobile; leasing was not inherently cheaper or more expensive.

Is JUMP! On Demand still available in 2026?
As of August 18, 2026, JUMP! On Demand appears to be closed to ordinary new enrollment and is being treated as a legacy program. T-Mobile’s current public upgrade page emphasizes EIP-based JUMP benefits, while 2025 reporting described the On Demand program as no longer accepting new signups: Android Authority’s report. T-Mobile’s 2024 offering memorandum also says a related Jump Upgrade Program was no longer available for new enrollments: offering memorandum.
That public evidence is not a substitute for your contract. Existing customers should check the signed lease, account portal and a written response from T-Mobile or a participating store for the maturity date, purchase option, return channel and any final upgrade right.
What to do if you still have an old lease
- Find the original lease and identify the maturity date and purchase option.
- Ask T-Mobile for the current payoff, return and upgrade status in writing.
- Compare the cost of returning, buying and upgrading, including taxes and any new down payment.
- Document the device condition and IMEI before any handoff.
- Keep proof until the old lease no longer appears on the bill.
Alternatives for a replacement phone
Current choices include T-Mobile EIP and plan-specific promotions (devices and trade-in), Apple’s iPhone Upgrade Program (Apple), Samsung financing (Samsung), Google Store financing and trade-ins (Google Store), or buying an unlocked phone directly. Compare total payments, upfront cost, taxes, insurance, required plan, bill-credit conditions, upgrade timing, ownership and resale flexibility rather than comparing monthly payments alone.
