A “free” phone usually means you finance the device and receive monthly carrier credits that offset the payments—not that you get a phone with no ongoing conditions. If you leave early, change to an ineligible plan, pay off the phone, or upgrade before the promotion ends, you may lose future credits and still owe the unpaid device balance. The arrangement can feel like a three-year commitment, but it is not necessarily a traditional service contract.
How a phone with a $0 payment works
A typical promotion pairs a device installment agreement with a separate monthly discount. For example, an illustrative $900 phone financed at $25 a month for 36 months would have a $25 monthly credit applied for the same 36 months. While both continue, the net device payment is $0. The customer still has to meet the promotion’s conditions for the credits to keep coming.
The zero-dollar figure usually describes the net phone payment, not the total cost of becoming a customer. Depending on the offer, you may owe sales tax on the phone’s full retail price, an activation or upgrade fee, and the cost of a qualifying plan. A trade-in, new line, account standing, AutoPay, or other requirements may also apply. Some offers require the phone to remain on the qualifying line.
Credits may not show up on the first bill. Verizon says they commonly take one or two billing periods to appear; AT&T says credits for some offers can take up to three bills. That lag can make early bills higher than the advertised net price. Check the offer’s stated timing and save its confirmation and promotion code. Verizon’s device-deal FAQ and AT&T’s offer terms explain their respective timing.

Is it a contract?
“Three-year contract” is useful shorthand for some offers, but it is not a precise description of every one. A traditional service contract can impose an early-termination fee for ending wireless service. A device installment agreement is different: it creates a debt for the phone, and an unpaid balance may become due if you cancel. Promotional credits are a third piece: they reduce the phone cost only while you satisfy the offer’s conditions.
So you may be free to leave the carrier while facing a substantial financial consequence. The offer’s installment term, credit period, required plan, and early-exit rules—not the word “free”—determine what you would owe. Read the device-payment agreement and the specific promotion terms together.
How the major carriers’ offers differ
Carrier patterns are not promises about every current offer. Terms vary by promotion, device, plan, trade-in, and enrollment date. The carriers’ published materials checked August 18, 2026, describe these general patterns:
| Carrier | Promotional period described | Common conditions and early-exit risk |
|---|---|---|
| Verizon | Often 36 months | Credits may depend on an eligible device, line, plan, and account status. Cancellation, an ineligible plan change, early upgrade, or early payoff can stop credits; the remaining device balance may be due. Verizon device-deal FAQ. |
| AT&T | Frequently 36 months | Current deals commonly use 0% installment agreements and may require a qualifying plan, trade-in, or new line. Cancellation can end credits and leave the remaining balance due. AT&T deals and offer terms. |
| T-Mobile | Current examples commonly use 24 monthly credits; terms can differ | Eligibility and the effects of cancellation or early payoff depend on the promotion and enrollment date. A remaining finance balance may become due if credits stop. Promotion details and 2026 promotion archive. |
These are broad patterns, not a substitute for the terms attached to the exact phone and offer you are considering. The carrier’s live offer page and written promotion terms control.

What could you owe if you leave early?
In the illustrative $900, 36-month example, the device installment is $25 monthly. Assuming no down payment, adjustments, or other offer-specific terms, the unpaid installment balance would be about $600 after 12 payments, $300 after 24, and $25 after 35. Those figures are the remaining device installments, not a universal early-cancellation fee.

If credits end when you leave, you also give up the future discount. How much that matters depends on the offer: a $25 monthly credit with 12 months remaining represents $300 in credits you would no longer receive. The balance and lost credits are separate effects; do not assume one cancels out the other. A down payment, a different financed price, or special promotion rules will change the calculation.
Verizon and AT&T say cancellation can end credits and make the remaining device balance due. Verizon notes a Missouri-specific exception under which continued payments may be allowed in some circumstances. T-Mobile advises checking with the carrier before canceling because credits may stop and the finance balance may become due. Review the terms for your location and offer before acting.
Changes that can put the discount at risk
Changing plans or moving a line
A plan change within the same carrier may be allowed, prohibited, or limited to certain plans. Check eligibility before changing tiers; Verizon warns that moving to a nonqualifying plan can stop credits, while AT&T ties offers to qualifying plans. Changing carriers generally ends the original carrier’s promotion. Moving a line between accounts or suspending service can also have specific consequences. Verizon says some credits may continue during suspension, while a military-deployment suspension can pause payments and credits.
Ask the carrier to confirm in writing that a proposed plan change, account transfer, or suspension preserves your specific promotion. A general assurance that your account is “eligible” may not answer what happens to the remaining credits.
Upgrading before the installment term ends
An early upgrade may require paying off or returning the existing phone, and it can end the remaining credits. The new phone may start a fresh installment agreement. An upgrade add-on, if you have one, does not automatically preserve promotional credits. Verizon and AT&T both warn that early upgrades or early payoff may stop credits. Before upgrading, compare the remaining device balance with the credits you would forfeit and any return or trade-in requirements.

Paying the phone off early
Early payoff does not have one universal effect. Credits might stop, continue under particular promotion rules, or be treated differently depending on when you enrolled. T-Mobile’s published terms distinguish some older promotions from certain later ones: some older offers allowed credits to continue after payoff, while specified later promotions forfeit remaining monthly recurring credits. Identify your exact promotion code and enrollment date rather than relying on a general carrier statement. T-Mobile’s 2026 promotion archive describes these distinctions.
Canceling another line on a family account
A promotion can depend on more than the line receiving the phone. AT&T’s published terms say that, for some offers, canceling another line within 90 days of activating a promotional line can stop credits. That is an offer-specific condition, not a general rule for all AT&T deals. Check whether the terms tie your discount to other lines on the account.
How to evaluate “up to” trade-in savings
“Up to $1,000 off” describes a maximum, not a guaranteed credit for every trade-in. The actual amount may depend on the old phone’s model and condition, its assessed trade-in value, the plan and line you choose, and whether you meet deadlines. Some promotions spread the credit across the full installment term rather than applying it upfront.
AT&T’s offer terms, for example, describe credits based on trade-in value and an applicable promotion maximum, spread equally across the installment term; the credit cannot exceed the device cost or the relevant offer limit. Calculate the credit for your exact trade-in rather than using the headline maximum. Before sending a device, record its condition, photograph it, save the IMEI and shipping receipt, and keep the tracking number. Those records can help document a dispute, though they do not guarantee acceptance.
What to check on the bill and before you sign
Compare the required cost of service and fees over the period you expect to keep the promotion with the value of the phone and any service benefits you genuinely need. Include the cost of any required new line, taxes, activation or upgrade fees, protection plan, and accessory lines. A phone payment that nets to $0 does not make those costs disappear.

- What is the phone’s retail price, financed amount, and monthly installment before credits?
- How much is the monthly credit, how many months does it last, and when should the first credit appear?
- What plan, monthly service price, account type, AutoPay setting, new line, or trade-in is required?
- Which trade-in model and condition qualify, and what is the deadline for completing the trade-in?
- What happens to credits if you change plans, move the line, suspend service, cancel another line, pay off the phone, upgrade, or leave the carrier?
- What device balance would remain after 6, 12, or 24 months, and could you afford it if you had to leave?
- Are taxes, fees, insurance, a second line, or financing charges excluded from the advertised price?
- Would you choose this carrier and plan without the phone promotion, and do you realistically expect to stay through the credit period?
After purchase, check the bill for the device installment charge, the promotional credit, the promotion name or code, and any added plan or protection charges. Verizon says its device credits may appear as “Device Promo” in monthly charges and credits. If the credit has not appeared within the offer’s stated window, keep the confirmation, verify that the trade-in was received and accepted, and contact the carrier before canceling service or changing the plan. Ask about catch-up credits if the promotion terms promise them.
Phones, tablets, watches, and two-device offers
A phone promotion can be worth evaluating if you need the phone and would keep the carrier anyway. A “free” tablet, smartwatch, or hotspot deserves extra scrutiny: cellular versions may require a separate monthly data line, and the device can become obsolete or go unused while the line and credits continue. Canceling that line may end its credits or leave its balance due.
For a second-device or BOGO offer, check whether each device has its own installment agreement, whether a new line is required, how long both lines must stay active, and whether the promotion depends on keeping both devices. Verizon’s published BOGO example shows separate device-payment charges and promotional credits that generally appear after one or two billing periods. Verizon’s BOGO example illustrates why the combined bill matters.
For a lost, stolen, or damaged phone, do not assume installments or credits automatically stop, continue, or transfer to a replacement. Check the specific promotion, installment agreement, warranty, insurance, and return terms. T-Mobile’s 2026 promotion archive says returning a device reverses applicable EIP charges and credits in the described circumstances and notes that some BOGO arrangements require two active devices. Those terms are offer-specific.
When a carrier phone deal may be worth it
The promotion is more likely to make financial sense if you already prefer the carrier, need the phone, qualify for the full advertised credit, can keep the required plan and line, and expect to stay through the credit period. A generous trade-in can improve the calculation, but only if the required service is also good value for you. Be sure you can cover the initial bills while credits are pending.

Be cautious if you are joining only for the phone, may move or change plans, want frequent upgrades, do not need a required extra line, or could not manage the remaining device balance if your circumstances change. The advertised discount is conditional; the required service is a real recurring expense.
Alternatives if you want more flexibility
Buy an unlocked phone
Buying outright from a manufacturer or retailer can make it easier to change carriers and avoid relying on delayed bill credits. It requires more money upfront and may not include a carrier subsidy. Before buying, compare the exact phone price, financing terms, trade-in value, return window, and warranty. Device prices and offers change, so check the seller’s current terms.
Use independent financing or choose a shorter offer
Manufacturer or retailer financing may separate phone payments from wireless service, but check the APR, eligibility, and payment terms. A 24-month credit period can shorten the time you need to remain with an offer compared with a 36-month one, but shorter does not automatically mean cheaper. Compare total credits, plan cost, and any trade-in requirements.
Keep your current phone or compare lower-cost service
If your existing phone still works and is supported, keeping it avoids a new device obligation, trade-in uncertainty, and purchase-related fees. If you already own a compatible unlocked phone—or are prepared to buy one separately—compare prepaid or MVNO plans with your actual data, hotspot, roaming, international, and multi-line needs. Service features and network performance vary, so a lower advertised plan price alone is not a like-for-like comparison.
