Droid Life reported a lowest price of $274.99 through the Shop Samsung app with a qualifying trade-in and possible first-time-user bonus. However, the published figures do not support the headline’s “$925 off” claim, and the offer has expired.
What the 2023 promotion included
Droid Life described three potentially stackable incentives:

The Galaxy Z Flip 5 launched in the United States at $999.99 for the base model, with 256GB and 512GB storage options; general availability began August 11, 2023. Samsung’s launch announcement is available at Samsung Newsroom, and its December 2023 MSRP sheet lists the 256GB model at $999.99 (Samsung MSRP PDF).
How shoppers were supposed to qualify
- Open the promotion through the Shop Samsung app or the mobile path specified in the 2023 deal report.
- Select an eligible Galaxy Z Flip 5 configuration while the Black Friday promotion was active.
- Choose a trade-in device and receive the displayed instant credit estimate.
- Meet the requirements for the $25 first-time-app-user incentive, if offered to the account.
- Send the trade-in by Samsung’s deadline and pass its inspection.
Droid Life listed the Galaxy S23 Ultra, Galaxy Z Flip 4, Galaxy Z Flip 3, Galaxy S22 Ultra and Galaxy Z Fold 4 as examples reported to qualify for up to $600. It also cited lower-value tiers for phones such as the Galaxy S23+, Galaxy S21 Ultra and Galaxy S22+. Those were contemporaneous examples, not a permanent Samsung trade-in table. Values can vary by model, storage, condition, carrier version, region and promotion.

The “$925 off” calculation does not reconcile
The headline claimed $925 in savings, but the article body did not show a calculation that produces that figure. Using the $999.99 launch MSRP and the reported $274.99 final price gives a difference of $725.00—not $925.
A straightforward sequential calculation also produces a different result:
- $999.99 minus 25% is approximately $749.99.
- $749.99 minus a $600 trade-in credit is approximately $149.99.
- Subtracting the $25 app bonus gives approximately $124.99.
The article described a price of about $749 before other incentives and discussed applying the trade-in and app discount in a particular order, but its displayed arithmetic still does not fully explain either $274.99 or $925. Without an archived checkout record or original Samsung terms, the safest conclusion is that $274.99 was Droid Life’s claimed best-case purchase price and the headline savings figure was not independently established.
Why $274.99 was a best-case scenario

- The purchase had to occur during the limited Black Friday window.
- The Shop Samsung app discount had to appear for the exact configuration.
- The trade-in device had to receive the maximum $600 valuation.
- The customer had to qualify for the first-time-app-user bonus.
- The trade-in had to be shipped on time and pass Samsung’s inspection.
- The quoted amount had to be compared before taxes and any other fees.
Samsung’s trade-in framework says a device generally must power on, hold a charge and have a functioning display. It must be factory-reset, free of personal data and software locks, owned by the customer rather than leased, and not be prohibited because of severe damage, liquid damage or blacklisting. Trade-in credit is not cash
The credit reduces the purchase price; it is not a separate cash payout. If the phone you surrender could sell privately for $500, a nominal $600 credit is not a $600 gain. Your economic cost includes the value of the device you give up.
Inspection can change the outcome
Samsung’s estimate is conditional. A cracked display, liquid damage, lock, blacklist status, missed shipping deadline or failed inspection can reduce the credit or trigger a chargeback under the applicable offer terms. Taxes and fees are also separate from the advertised promotional subtotal.

In 2023, a roughly $1,000 unlocked foldable discounted by a large trade-in credit could be compelling for someone already planning to replace a high-value Galaxy phone. The Flip 5’s compact design and larger cover display were the reason to consider it, while the trade-in requirement reduced the upfront price.

The trade-off was ownership risk. Foldables place more importance on hinge and inner-screen condition and can involve higher repair exposure than conventional slab phones. Buyers also needed to check warranty and protection-plan coverage and decide whether giving up a recent phone made financial sense.
That assessment is historical. In 2026, the Flip 5 is a previous-generation model, so its software-support horizon, remaining inventory and warranty status should be checked before purchase. Do not treat the 2023 promotion as a current buying recommendation.
Is the promotion still available?
No. The deal was reported on November 20, 2023. As of August 18, 2026, Samsung’s current offer pages emphasize newer Galaxy Z models, including the Galaxy Z Flip 7 and Galaxy Z Flip 8, rather than this expired Flip 5 promotion. How to evaluate a similar Samsung deal today
- Record the phone’s current cash or private-sale value before accepting a trade-in credit.
- Confirm the exact model, storage tier and purchase channel shown in the checkout.
- Separate the instant device credit, percentage discount and any account-specific bonus.
- Calculate the final pre-tax price and add taxes, fees and the value of the surrendered phone.
- Read the shipping deadline, inspection standards and chargeback language.
- Compare the resulting cost with a current model, refurbished unit and carrier promotion.
Verdict
The 2023 Flip 5 promotion could have produced a very low upfront price for a narrow group of shoppers, especially owners of a qualifying recent Galaxy phone. But “$925 off” was not supported by the published body math: the reported $274.99 price is $725 below the $999.99 MSRP, and even that figure depended on maximum trade-in value, app access, bonus eligibility and successful inspection. The promotion is historical and expired.
