The intended flow let users route supported assets from external networks into Cosmos, swap them through Osmosis and send the resulting assets to connected Cosmos chains. XDEFI has since rebranded as Ctrl Wallet, so this is a retrospective explanation of the integration—not a new 2026 launch.
The short version
The announcement combined four different functions:
- Ctrl/XDEFI: wallet interface, account management and transaction signing.
- Squid Router: cross-chain route selection and execution.
- Osmosis: Cosmos-based swap execution and liquidity.
- IBC: transfers between Cosmos chains with compatible channels.
The practical improvement was consolidation. A user could potentially avoid opening a separate bridge, exchange and IBC-transfer interface. The underlying transactions, fees, liquidity constraints and bridge or messaging assumptions did not disappear.
What was announced in August 2023?
The original release described an XDEFI wallet integration with Osmosis, IBC transfers and Squid Router. It also described Squid as powered by Axelar Network at that time. TechBullion’s announcement coverage is the dated source for those claims.

Related 2023 coverage claimed support for 34 blockchains and more than 10,000 assets. Those were promotional figures for the product at that time, not current Ctrl specifications. The same announcement promoted a Cosmos Odyssey campaign with a token prize pool exceeding $25,000; that campaign was historical and should not be treated as an active offer.
How the route was supposed to work
A representative architecture was:
Source asset on an external chain → Squid cross-chain route → Cosmos destination → Osmosis swap → IBC transfer to another connected Cosmos chain
Syndicated coverage used a native-Bitcoin-to-Cosmos-asset-to-Kujira journey as an illustration. Bitcoinist’s version makes clear that this was an example, not a guarantee that every asset or destination remains available.

What happens technically
- The user approves or signs a transaction on the source blockchain.
- Squid selects an available route using supported bridges, messaging systems, liquidity sources and destination transactions.
- An asset arrives on a Cosmos chain, potentially in a representation different from the source asset.
- Osmosis can swap that asset for another Cosmos denomination if a suitable pool exists.
- An IBC transfer can move the resulting asset to another Cosmos chain with a usable channel.
- Each stage waits for its own confirmations and may require separate gas payments.
“One-click” therefore describes the wallet experience, not necessarily one atomic blockchain transaction.

| Component | Role | What it did not guarantee |
|---|---|---|
| Ctrl/XDEFI | Held accounts, displayed assets, connected to supported applications and presented signing requests. | It did not create a bridge or make every asset transferable. |
| Squid Router | Selected and coordinated cross-chain routes. | It was not a universal bridge with identical security or settlement for every route. |
| Axelar | Provided interoperability infrastructure used by Squid on applicable routes; the 2023 announcement described Squid as Axelar-powered. | Current Squid routing is not limited to Axelar. |
| Osmosis | Provided Cosmos-side trading and liquidity. | It was not itself the bridge from an external chain. |
| IBC | Moved assets between connected Cosmos chains using interchain channels. | It does not automatically connect every Cosmos chain or denomination. |
Current Squid documentation says its routing can use IBC, Circle CCTP, Chainflip and Axelar depending on the route. Squid’s bridge documentation is therefore a better guide to present architecture than the simplified 2023 phrase “powered by Axelar.”
What problem did the integration solve?
Without aggregation, a cross-ecosystem user might need a source-chain wallet, a bridge or router, a Cosmos wallet connection, Osmosis for swapping and a separate IBC interface. They would also need to maintain gas balances on more than one network.

The integration attempted to place those tasks behind one wallet workflow. That can reduce interface switching and user error, but it does not remove source-chain finality, relayers, bridge contracts, DEX liquidity, destination gas or transaction-recovery requirements.
Risks and checks before signing
Route and asset availability
Wallet support, router support, DEX liquidity and IBC connectivity are separate conditions. A token that Ctrl can display may not be routable through Squid, tradable on Osmosis or transferable to the chain you want.
Liquidity, slippage and minimum output
A route that combines cross-chain conversion with an Osmosis swap can produce material price impact, especially for a large order or shallow pool. Check the quoted minimum received, slippage setting and intermediary asset before approving.

Fees and gas
Budget for source-chain gas, destination-chain gas, router or bridge charges, swap fees and any relayer costs. Keep a small balance of the relevant native gas token for the next transaction; receiving an asset does not necessarily leave you able to swap or transfer it.
Asset denomination and representation
The Cosmos-side token may be native, canonical-wrapped or another representation. Confirm its denomination, issuer and redemption assumptions before sending it onward.
Delays and failed execution
A single screen can hide source-chain confirmation, bridge attestations, relaying and destination execution. If a route fails, funds may remain in an intermediate address or require a refund process. Save the transaction ID and use the route provider’s recovery instructions rather than submitting repeated transactions.

Review token approvals and contract calls. Ctrl advertises Ledger and Trezor support, dApp scanning, transaction simulation and transaction analysis on its security page, but those features are risk-reduction tools, not guarantees that a transaction is safe: Ctrl security features.
Independent reader supportYour contribution helps us test, update, and keep practical guides available for everyone. What changed after XDEFI became Ctrl?
XDEFI announced its transition to Ctrl Wallet on July 17, 2024. The rebrand announcement identifies Ctrl as the successor product. Current developer documentation likewise describes Ctrl as “ex-XDEFI” and lists support for UTXO, EVM, Cosmos, Solana, Tron and Cardano ecosystems: Ctrl developer documentation.
Ctrl’s current website advertises Chrome, iOS and Android products and claims support for more than 2,500 blockchains and millions of assets. Those are current first-party marketing claims, not an independent audit, and they are not directly comparable with the 34-chain and 10,000-asset figures used in 2023 coverage. Check the live wallet interface for the exact chain, asset and route you need.
Product versions and operational status change frequently. A status page signal or a current extension version cannot prove that every route described in 2023 still works identically.
When this integrated approach makes sense
- You want to move from a non-Cosmos network into Cosmos without coordinating several applications.
- You already use Ctrl and value one multichain signing interface.
- The destination asset has adequate liquidity and a working IBC path.
- You accept a generalized router’s route and fee rather than selecting every protocol manually.
When a direct route may be better
- You are moving a large amount and need to compare price impact and bridge limits yourself.
- You require a particular security model or native-asset settlement.
- You want complete visibility into each bridge, swap and IBC transaction.
- The integrated route does not expose enough details about fees, representations or recovery.
Alternatives by use case
| Need | Options | Trade-off |
|---|---|---|
| Cosmos-native wallet | Keplr, Leap or Cosmostation | Strong Cosmos focus, but less emphasis on a single multichain interface. |
| EVM wallet | MetaMask or Rabby | Broad EVM compatibility; Cosmos workflows may require additional tools. |
| Solana-oriented wallet | Phantom | Useful for Solana users, not a replacement for every Cosmos function. |
| Direct protocol use | Osmosis, Squid and a Cosmos wallet separately | More route transparency and control, but more interfaces and opportunities for mistakes. |
Squid’s wallet list includes Keplr, Leap, Cosmostation, XDEFI, MetaMask, Rabby and other wallets, but compatibility does not imply identical chain coverage or feature parity: Squid supported wallets.
Verdict
The August 2023 XDEFI integration was meaningful as a wallet-level interoperability and user-experience improvement. Squid handled cross-chain routing, Osmosis supplied Cosmos liquidity and swaps, and IBC provided interchain transfers where channels existed. Calling it a “new era” was marketing language: the integration did not eliminate bridge risk, slippage, gas costs, unsupported routes or chain-specific failure modes. In 2026, the accurate name for the wallet is Ctrl, while the original XDEFI announcement remains useful as a historical explanation of how those pieces were brought together.
