Choose Office Home 2024 for personal or school use on one computer, or Office Home & Business 2024 if you need Outlook or a license for commercial work. Choose Microsoft 365 if you want current features, cloud storage, or Office on multiple devices. The U.S. Microsoft Store listed the one-time-purchase editions at $179.99 and $249.99, respectively, when checked in August 2026.
What Office 2024 is—and how long it is supported
Office 2024 is a fixed-version desktop suite for Windows and Mac, sold as a one-time purchase. You can keep using the version you buy without an annual renewal, but the purchase does not include the next major Office release. Microsoft says one-time-purchase Office receives security and quality updates during its support period, rather than the continuous feature additions available with Microsoft 365. Microsoft lists Office 2024’s lifecycle as beginning October 1, 2024, and ending October 10, 2029. Microsoft’s Office 2024 lifecycle page has the dates.
“One-time purchase” therefore does not mean permanent support or guaranteed compatibility with every future version of Windows or macOS. The license terms and lifecycle are separate from whether the installed apps continue to run on a particular future system.
Office LTSC 2024 is a different product: it is a volume-licensing edition for organizations with fixed deployments or limited internet access, not the usual consumer purchase. These are U.S. Microsoft Store prices, not guaranteed prices elsewhere or later. Regional names, availability, promotions, and prices can change. Check the product listing and terms for your country before buying: Office Home 2024 and Office Home & Business 2024.
Pick Home for personal or school use
Office Home 2024 is the less expensive choice if you need Word, Excel, PowerPoint, and OneNote on one computer and will use them for non-commercial purposes. It does not list Outlook among its included apps. A freelancer, contractor, or business owner should not assume the cheaper Home edition covers work use; Microsoft describes the product as non-commercial.
Pick Home & Business for Outlook or commercial work
Home & Business adds Outlook and is the relevant one-time-purchase option if you need to use the suite for business. It still licenses one PC or Mac, so it is not a multi-device or household-sharing plan.
Office 2024 or Microsoft 365?
Office 2024 suits someone who wants a fixed desktop version, works on one computer, and prefers to avoid recurring billing. Microsoft 365 is a subscription: Microsoft describes it as including current app versions, ongoing feature updates, cloud storage, and use across multiple devices. Neither option is automatically cheaper. Compare how many people and devices need access, how long you expect to use the software, whether you need cloud storage, and whether ongoing upgrades matter to you. If you would otherwise pay for each new major Office version, include that possibility in your comparison rather than comparing only today’s prices.
What the one-time purchase does not include
Buying Office Home or Home & Business does not buy the full Microsoft 365 service bundle. In particular, these one-time suites do not include bundled OneDrive storage, Exchange Online, SharePoint Online, or the continuously updated Microsoft 365 feature set. Some cloud-backed capabilities also depend on Microsoft 365; Microsoft describes limitations in its Office suites for individuals and families guidance.
Do not assume that buying Office 2024 includes Copilot or every cloud-connected feature associated with a Microsoft 365 subscription. If a specific online service, collaboration capability, or AI feature is essential, confirm that the plan and app support it before paying.

There is a Windows 10 discrepancy worth checking before checkout: Microsoft’s Store listings mention Windows 10 and Windows 11, while its current detailed requirements page lists Windows 11. If you plan to install Office 2024 on Windows 10, verify compatibility on the product page and at checkout rather than relying on a general promise. The requirements can change; consult Microsoft’s current system requirements.
Microsoft supports Mac hardware running one of the three most recent macOS versions, dropping the oldest version as newer major macOS releases arrive. The apps are not identical on Windows and Mac; Access is not available for Mac. Check the current requirements and included-app details for your edition if you rely on a platform-specific feature.
You need a Microsoft account and internet access to redeem or associate a purchase and activate Office. After installation and activation, desktop apps can generally be used offline, but internet access is still needed for periodic activation checks. How to buy, install, and activate Office 2024
Buy directly from Microsoft
- Choose Office Home 2024 or Office Home & Business 2024. Check the apps, operating system, region, and commercial-use terms before placing the order.
- Sign in with the Microsoft account that should own the license, then complete the purchase. Keep the receipt and any product key provided.
- Open your Microsoft account’s Services & subscriptions section, locate Office, and select Install.
- Run the downloaded installer and follow its prompts.
- Open Word, Excel, or another included app and sign in with the purchasing Microsoft account to activate.
Redeem a boxed or authorized retail product key
- Go to setup.office.com and sign in or create a Microsoft account.
- Enter the 25-character product key and associate it with the account you intend to use.
- Install Office from that account’s Services & subscriptions section, then open an app and sign in to activate.

Moving Office to another computer and choosing 32-bit or 64-bit
A one-time consumer license is for one licensed device at a time; it is not permission to install the same license on several computers for simultaneous use or share it as though it were a Microsoft 365 Family plan. Microsoft’s license terms generally allow transfer of a stand-alone license to another device you own no more than once every 90 days, except after hardware failure, and require removing the software from the previous device. Read the license terms for the conditions that apply to your purchase.
On Windows, Microsoft says Office 2024 supports both 32-bit and 64-bit versions. Choose based on your environment rather than assuming 64-bit is always preferable: older add-ins, ActiveX controls, VBA dependencies, and other Office components may affect compatibility, while large workbooks and memory needs can favor 64-bit. Buying Home for business use or expecting Outlook
If Outlook is missing after installation, check the exact edition on your receipt and in Services & subscriptions. Home does not list Outlook and is described for non-commercial use; Home & Business includes Outlook and is described for home or business use. If the edition is wrong, contact Microsoft Store support before making another purchase.
Paying for a suspiciously cheap “lifetime” key
A very low-priced marketplace key may be unauthorized, already used beyond its activation allowance, or tied to an organization rather than a retail license for you. Activation can later fail or be withdrawn, and a seller may disappear; an altered installer also creates security risk. Buy from Microsoft or a clearly authorized retailer selling a legitimate retail license, and avoid sellers who promise a price far below the official listing without explaining the license type.

Assuming offline use means no internet is ever needed
Redemption, installation or activation, and periodic activation checks can require an internet connection. Offline use is possible after activation, but the purchase is not a guarantee of permanently internet-free operation.
Installing beside an older Office version without checking
Office 2016, 2019, 2021, or Microsoft 365 installations may involve older MSI installers, add-ins, or shared components that complicate coexistence. Before installing Office 2024 alongside an existing version, follow Microsoft’s current installation FAQ rather than assuming every combination will work cleanly.
When a free web app is enough
If basic browser-based editing meets your needs and you have reliable internet access, you may not need to buy desktop Office. Microsoft offers free web versions of Word, Excel, and PowerPoint through Microsoft 365 for the web. They are not a substitute for every desktop feature or specialized offline workflow, so compare the functions you actually use before deciding.
