They are separate products, not two versions of the same service: Squarespace is a website builder with commerce, while Square is a payments and small-business operating system with an online store. U.S. prices and fees below are reference figures checked in August 2026; plan availability, billing terms and processing rates can vary.
Squarespace vs Square at a glance
| Category | Squarespace | Square |
|---|---|---|
| Best for | Brand-led websites, portfolios, blogs, services and smaller online stores | Retail, restaurants, services and sellers combining online and in-person sales |
| Core product | Hosted website builder with commerce and business tools | Payment processing, POS and business operations, with online selling |
| Website design | More layout and branding flexibility for content-rich sites | Practical storefront setup tied to the Square catalog |
| In-person selling | POS connections are available on eligible plans; not its central strength | Native POS ecosystem with hardware, payments and retail workflows |
| Inventory and operations | Commerce tools suited to simpler selling needs | Stronger fit for syncing catalog and in-person sales, with retail-specific tools |
| Starting subscription reference | Official pricing page showed plans from $19/month; annual-billing reference prices from a 2026 review begin at $16/month | Square Online Free is $0/month; paid plan prices vary by page and pricing structure |
| Best alternative to consider | Shopify or another ecommerce platform if store operations outgrow its strengths | Squarespace if the website is the primary marketing asset; Shopify for deeper ecommerce |
Neither is universally cheaper. Compare the subscription, platform transaction fee, payment processing, per-location charges and any hardware or add-ons you actually need.
What is the difference between Squarespace and Square?
Squarespace is website-first
Squarespace bundles website hosting, templates, pages, blogging, portfolios and commerce features. Its current materials describe AI-assisted site creation, SEO tools, selling products and services, invoicing, subscriptions, appointment booking, POS and multichannel selling. Its design-led approach makes it a natural fit when the site needs to explain the business, tell its story and present a polished brand alongside a store. See Squarespace’s comparison of its platform and Square.
Square is payments-and-operations-first
Square centers on taking payments and running day-to-day business workflows. Its ecosystem includes Square Point of Sale, Square Online, inventory, customer profiles, invoices, payment links, appointments, gift cards and hardware. Online and in-person selling can draw on the same Square business setup, which is particularly useful when stock, staff or customer records need to connect to checkout. Square Online plan details are at Square’s plans page.

The names are similar, but the products are distinct. A Squarespace subscription does not automatically make Square the payment processor. Squarespace supports Squarespace Payments and, where available and eligible, third-party processors including Stripe, PayPal and Square.
How much do Squarespace and Square cost?
The figures here are U.S. reference prices observed in August 2026, not a guarantee of the price shown to every customer. Plan labels, billing frequency, eligibility, country and account history can affect the offer. Confirm the checkout price and the processing rate shown for your account before subscribing.

| Advanced | $99/month, annual-billing reference reported by TechRadar in 2026 | 0% platform commerce transaction fee on qualifying plan |
| Official starting price | From $19/month on the official U.S. pricing page observed in August 2026 | Displayed checkout prices may differ by billing cycle, location or promotion |

The annual-billing tier figures are an independent reference reported by TechRadar’s Squarespace review, not a universal quote. Squarespace’s own plan guidance describes the current Basic, Core, Plus and Advanced structure, and states that fees vary by plan and country: plan guidance and payment rates and transaction fees.
Square Online plan and processing costs
| Plan or fee schedule | Reference amount | Qualification |
|---|---|---|
| Free | $0/month | One Square Online plan page lists online processing at 2.9% + $0.30 |
| Plus | $29/month billed annually | The same page lists online processing at 2.9% + $0.30 |
| Premium | $79/month billed annually | The same page lists online processing at 2.6% + $0.30 |
| Newer location-based structure | $0, $49 and $149/month for Free, Plus and Premium, respectively | Other current Square pages show these prices and a different online fee schedule |
| Newer online or invoice fee schedule | Free: 3.3% + $0.30; Plus and Premium: 2.9% + $0.30 | Listed in Square’s newer fee documentation; confirm which plan and rate apply to your account |
Square’s public pages currently show inconsistent online plan and fee details. The Square Online plans page includes one schedule, while Square’s fee documentation lists, among other rates, 3.3% + $0.30 for Free online or invoice payments. Do not assume one public figure applies to every Square product or account; check the rate displayed for your specific plan.

Do not confuse platform fees with payment processing
A platform transaction fee is charged by a website or commerce plan. A processing fee is charged for handling the payment. For example, Squarespace Basic’s listed 2% store fee is not the same as Squarespace Payments’ documented 2.5% + $0.30 domestic-card processing fee. If both apply to a sale, both affect the cost. Square’s percentage-plus-fixed fees are processing charges, not a direct like-for-like comparison with Squarespace’s platform fee.
Payment rates also depend on how a customer pays. Square separates online, invoice, card-present, manual-entry and international-card transactions; its U.S. fee documentation lists 2.6% + $0.15 for card-present Free transactions and an additional 1.5% for international cards, alongside the online and invoice rates. Treat these as categories, not interchangeable prices.
Estimate your total cost before choosing
Use the same sales assumptions for both platforms:
Estimated annual platform cost = subscription × 12 + payment-processing percentage + per-transaction fees + platform transaction fees + add-ons + hardware.
For an illustrative comparison, assume all sales are online, use Squarespace Payments at the documented domestic-card rate, and exclude tax, shipping, refunds, chargebacks, hardware and add-ons. At $1,000 in monthly sales across 20 transactions, the processing portion is $31/month (2.5% of $1,000, plus $0.30 × 20). At $5,000 across 100 transactions, it is $155/month; at $10,000 across 200 transactions, it is $310/month. Add the Squarespace subscription and, on Basic, the additional 2% platform fee. These are arithmetic examples using the stated rate, not a quote or claim that every order qualifies for it.
Rank #2
For Square, those same sales totals cannot be compared responsibly without first settling which of its conflicting online schedules applies to your account. Once you have that rate, use the same transaction counts and add the Square plan charge, including any per-location subscription. A $0 subscription does not mean $0 cost when sales are processed.
Square can be less expensive when revenue is low or irregular and the Free tier meets the business’s needs. A paid Squarespace tier with no platform transaction fee may become more attractive as online sales rise, depending on subscription cost and processing rate. Multiple Square locations, hardware and operational add-ons can change the result.
Which platform has the better website design?
Choose Squarespace for a brand-led site
Squarespace is generally the better fit for portfolios, blogs, professional services, landing pages and stores that need to sit inside a broader branded website. Its templates and page-building tools offer more control over presentation, while the site can combine editorial content, service pages and product sales. That matters when visitors need to understand why a business is different before they buy.
Choose Square for a functional store tied to operations
Square Online is aimed at getting a catalog online and connecting it to Square’s selling workflows. Its layouts, catalog and fulfillment tools can be practical for a seller already using Square, but its primary advantage is operational integration rather than the same degree of design flexibility. Avoid choosing it on the assumption that the storefront will offer Squarespace-level brand control.

Small, curated catalog
Squarespace is often the stronger storefront for a modest range of products, especially when product discovery depends on photography, storytelling and supporting content. Its materials advertise product listings, shipping integrations, subscriptions, appointment booking, invoicing, POS and multichannel selling. Feature availability depends on plan and location; see Squarespace’s selling features by plan.
Retail stock that moves between online and physical sales
Square is usually the better fit when products are sold both online and at a counter and stock accuracy matters. Catalog management, customer profiles, pickup, discounts, refunds, gift cards and POS are part of its business ecosystem. For more demanding retail workflows, Square Retail Plus advertises barcode labels, purchase orders, vendor management and cost-of-goods-sold reporting on its retail system page.
Complex ecommerce operations
Neither platform should be selected automatically for a large or operationally complex online store. Assess catalog size, variants, international markets, fulfillment, reporting and integrations. Shopify is worth evaluating when ecommerce is the core business and a broader app ecosystem or more advanced store operations are important: Shopify plans.
Which is better for in-person sales and POS?
Square is the clear default for businesses whose sales happen at a counter, table, salon desk, market stall or physical shop. Its POS ecosystem supports tap, dip and swipe payments, Tap to Pay on iPhone and Android, hardware, inventory, customer profiles and retail workflows. Square advertises hardware options beginning at $59 and supports payment methods such as invoices, payment links, virtual terminal and Tap to Pay without requiring a POS device for every transaction. Hardware and software pricing details are on Square’s POS pricing page.
Rank #3
Squarespace supports POS and can connect Square as a payment processor on eligible plans, but it is not primarily a retail POS platform. Squarespace’s support page lists processor connections, including Square, with eligibility conditions: connect a payment processor.
For multiple locations, advanced inventory, vendor management, purchase orders or barcode workflows, Square or a specialist retail platform is a stronger place to start. Square’s paid plan charges can be per location, so multiply subscription cost by the locations that require the plan before comparing totals.
How do SEO, blogging and marketing tools compare?
Squarespace is better suited to content-led acquisition: blogs, case studies, service pages, portfolios and branded landing pages can live alongside the store. Its platform materials mention responsive design, search-friendly URLs, SEO tools, Google and Bing integrations, and email marketing. These tools help with implementation; they do not guarantee search rankings. Results still depend on useful content, technical setup, links, local relevance and competition.
Square includes basic website layouts, blog content, custom-domain support and SEO tools, but its main advantage remains commerce and payment operations. It can be adequate when the site’s job is to show products, take orders and direct customers to a physical business, rather than support a deep publishing strategy. Square Online features are described at Square’s plan page.

What about appointments, services and integrations?
Appointments and service businesses
Both platforms offer paths for service businesses. Squarespace combines a branded website with service sales, scheduling and invoicing features, making it attractive to consultants, coaches and professionals who need content and presentation. Square Appointments is a closer fit when scheduling and payment operations are central, particularly for salons, spas and appointment-based businesses. See Square Appointments pricing for its product-specific terms.
Apps and extensions
Squarespace emphasizes native tools and selected extensions, which can keep a website stack relatively contained. Square has a broader operational ecosystem and an App Marketplace for retail, restaurants, appointments, payroll, marketing, loyalty and other workflows; its retail system page describes third-party connections. If maximum ecommerce extensibility is the deciding factor, compare Shopify or another dedicated commerce platform rather than assuming either platform covers every workflow.
Can you use Squarespace and Square together?
Yes. A business can use Squarespace for its public-facing site and connect Square as a payment processor on eligible Squarespace plans. This can make sense when a polished brand site matters but Square already runs in-person payments or POS.
Do not assume the connection synchronizes every product, order, customer record or inventory change in both directions. Before launch, test the precise workflow you need: place an online order, issue a refund, change stock in person, and verify what updates in each system. The processor connection is documented at Squarespace Support.

Which platform should you choose?
Creators, consultants and personal brands
Choose Squarespace when the portfolio, blog, case studies and service pages are central to winning customers, with only a smaller store or occasional payments attached.
Retailers, restaurants and cafés
Choose Square when the business needs counter or table payments, pickup, catalog management or inventory that connects online and in-person sales. A restaurant or café that mainly needs a polished informational site and simple ordering may prefer Squarespace for the website, with a separate appropriate ordering/POS workflow.
Salons, spas and appointment businesses
Choose Square when appointment scheduling, staff operations and taking payments at the desk are the heart of the workflow. Choose Squarespace when brand presentation and content lead, and appointments are one feature of a larger site.
Small online shops
Choose Squarespace for a curated, visually distinctive shop with a broader content site. Choose Square when the shop extends an existing Square business and operational continuity is more important than page customization.
Multichannel or multi-location sellers
Square is generally the stronger fit when inventory and payment operations must connect across physical locations and online channels, but evaluate per-location charges and whether its specific inventory tools meet your needs.
Occasional sellers
Square Free may be worth considering if sales are infrequent and the account-specific processing fee is acceptable. Compare the all-in cost with Squarespace rather than treating the absence of a monthly subscription as a complete cost comparison.
When should you consider another platform?
Consider Shopify if online retail is the core business and you need more ecommerce specialization, integrations or growth capacity than either option offers. Consider Wix if you want a general-purpose website builder and do not need Square’s deepest POS workflows: Wix plans. WooCommerce may suit a team that wants WordPress flexibility and is prepared to manage hosting, security, updates and plugins: WooCommerce. A custom site or application with developer-focused payment infrastructure may call for Stripe: Stripe pricing.
Quick Recap
What to verify before subscribing
- Confirm the plan price for your country, billing cycle and number of locations.
- Check whether the quoted transaction rate is for online, in-person, invoice, manual-entry or international-card payments.
- Separate the website platform’s transaction fee from the payment processor’s fee.
- List required add-ons such as domains, marketing, scheduling, payroll, loyalty, hardware or shipping tools.
- Test the checkout, refund, inventory and customer-record workflows you expect to use.
- For Square offline payments, understand that queued transactions are processed after reconnection and may be declined if the device does not reconnect within the stated window; review the applicable Square terms before relying on offline acceptance.
