Microsoft is using Windows 10’s October 14, 2025 end-of-support deadline to accelerate PC upgrades and promote Copilot+ computers, including ARM-based Snapdragon models. That does not make an ARM laptop mandatory. An eligible Intel- or AMD-based Windows 10 computer can usually be upgraded to Windows 11, and a new x86 Windows 11 or Copilot+ PC remains the safer choice for many older applications, games and peripherals.

What changed for Windows 10 users

Windows 10 version 22H2 was the final feature update. Standard support ended on October 14, 2025, so ordinary installations no longer receive normal security updates, feature updates or Microsoft technical support. The PC does not stop working, however. Microsoft’s lifecycle guidance describes Extended Security Updates (ESU) as a separate way to receive eligible Critical and Important security updates; availability, price, term and eligibility depend on the country and edition. Check the current terms at Microsoft’s Windows lifecycle FAQ.

Microsoft’s transition messaging points users toward Windows 11 PCs, Copilot+ PCs and Windows 365. Microsoft 365 Apps on Windows 10 have a separate arrangement: security updates are scheduled through October 10, 2028, while feature updates continue through August 2026. Those dates do not mean that Windows 10 itself remains fully supported. (Microsoft’s transition guidance)

Is Microsoft requiring an ARM PC?

No. Microsoft is commercially presenting ARM-based Copilot+ laptops as an attractive, modern upgrade, but its technical requirement is to move to a supported solution—not to change processor architecture. Copilot+ is a hardware category that includes qualifying Snapdragon systems as well as Intel and AMD models. (Microsoft’s CES 2025 announcement)

Choice What it means Typical reason to choose it
Upgrade current PC Windows 11 on existing Intel or AMD hardware Lowest cost when the machine is healthy and compatible
New x86 Windows 11 PC Intel- or AMD-based laptop or desktop Broadest legacy software and driver compatibility
ARM Copilot+ PC Windows 11 on ARM, commonly Snapdragon X-series Battery life, quiet mobility and local AI capability
x86 Copilot+ PC Copilot+ features on qualifying Intel or AMD hardware AI features with fewer architecture-related compatibility risks

First decide whether you need new hardware

Check Windows 11 eligibility

  1. On Windows 10, open Settings → Update & Security → Windows Update and review the upgrade message.
  2. Run Microsoft’s PC Health Check application for a fuller compatibility result.
  3. If the computer is managed by an employer, ask IT before changing it.

Installing Windows 11 on an eligible Intel or AMD machine does not turn it into an ARM computer.

Check the machine’s condition

  • Battery or storage failure, too little memory, weak graphics, an outdated webcam or poor wireless hardware may justify replacement.
  • Those are replacement reasons, not evidence that ARM is required.
  • If a required application, security agent or peripheral driver cannot run on the supported Windows 11 version, a new computer may be necessary.

What “ARM,” “Windows on Arm” and “Copilot+” mean

An ARM-based PC uses the ARM processor architecture rather than the x86/x64 architecture common in Intel and AMD Windows computers. Windows on Arm is Windows 11 compiled for that hardware; ARM64 applications run natively, while some x86 and x64 programs run through emulation.

A Copilot+ PC is a Windows computer with hardware for advanced local AI functions, including a neural processing unit (NPU). ARM is one implementation, not the definition. A representative 13-inch Snapdragon Surface Laptop lists a Qualcomm Hexagon NPU rated at 45 TOPS and Windows 11 Home. (Microsoft product specifications)

Why ARM is attracting Microsoft’s attention

Mobility and efficiency

ARM designs can deliver thin, quiet laptops with strong standby behavior and, on selected models, integrated cellular connectivity. Microsoft lists the 13-inch Snapdragon Surface Laptop at 2.7 pounds and claims up to 23 hours of local video playback and up to 16 hours of active web use. Those are Microsoft figures under specified test conditions, not a guarantee for every configuration or workload. Brightness, display resolution, browser tabs, wireless use and background software can materially change battery life. (Microsoft’s test claims)

Local AI processing

The NPU can accelerate selected effects such as camera framing, microphone processing, live captions and translation, and some image or search features. “Copilot+” does not mean every AI function runs locally. Availability can depend on Windows version, hardware, language, region, privacy settings, Microsoft account or subscription, and whether a feature is still in preview.

A larger native-ARM software base

Microsoft said that, as of February 2025, applications with native ARM versions represented 90% of total user minutes across Windows 10 and Windows 11 devices, according to reporting by TechRadar. This is a usage-weighted Microsoft claim, not a statement that 90% of all Windows applications have ARM versions. A single unsupported accounting package, plug-in, scanner or game can still determine your buying decision. (TechRadar’s report)

Where ARM compatibility can break

Microsoft’s Windows on Arm FAQ warns that drivers must support Windows 11 on Arm. Emulation cannot substitute for an incompatible kernel driver, device driver or low-level service. Microsoft also notes that Windows Fax and Scan is unavailable on Windows 11 Arm systems. (Microsoft’s Windows on Arm FAQ)

Workflow Risk to verify
Office, browsers, email, Zoom and Slack Usually a strong fit, but confirm native builds or emulation behavior for essential add-ins.
Games Titles using incompatible kernel-level anti-cheat may fail even when the game itself launches.
CAD, scientific, medical, industrial and specialist accounting software Check the exact application, version, plug-ins and licensing service.
Printers, scanners, USB, serial, FireWire and proprietary devices ARM-compatible drivers and utilities are required; emulation does not fix a missing driver.
VPN, antivirus, endpoint management and virtualization Low-level components may lack ARM support; confirm with the vendor or IT department.
Accessibility and assistive technology Screen readers and other tools need explicit ARM support, not merely a working main application.
Music and creative work Older audio interfaces, plug-ins, scanners, card readers and specialized Adobe workflows need model- and version-specific checks.

Is emulation good enough?

Microsoft says its Prism emulation engine is available on Snapdragon X-series Copilot+ PCs and improves emulated-app performance over previous generations. A native ARM application is still normally the best path for performance, battery use and reliability. An emulated x86 or x64 productivity app may work very well, but could use more power or expose feature limitations. Driver-dependent software, anti-cheat systems and virtualization tools remain special cases that emulation cannot automatically solve. (Microsoft’s compatibility guidance)

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Use this compatibility test before buying

  1. Write down every essential application, plug-in and game.
  2. List every important printer, scanner, dock, audio interface, VPN, security tool and other peripheral by exact model.
  3. Check each vendor’s Windows-on-Arm support page and search the exact product version.
  4. Confirm license activation, cloud sign-in, plug-in and file-format compatibility.
  5. Buy from a seller offering a practical return period when any essential item remains uncertain.

Which route fits which buyer?

Upgrade the existing PC

Choose this when PC Health Check approves it, the battery, storage, memory and performance remain acceptable, and you rely on older x86 software or peripherals. It is generally the cheapest route and provides no local AI capability unless the existing hardware independently meets Copilot+ requirements.

Buy an ARM Copilot+ PC

This is sensible for people whose work is mainly browser-based, Microsoft 365, communications, streaming and other mainstream software, and who value low weight, quiet operation and battery life more than maximum compatibility. Do not choose it without checking specialized applications, drivers and games.

Buy an x86 Copilot+ PC

Intel- and AMD-based Copilot+ systems offer the AI category’s hardware capabilities while generally preserving broader compatibility with legacy Windows software, games, plug-ins and peripherals. Compare the exact CPU, GPU, NPU, memory, display, battery and return policy rather than assuming every Copilot+ model behaves the same.

Use ESU as a bridge

ESU can make sense when the current PC is reliable, cannot be replaced immediately and has a documented enrollment path. It does not add Windows 11 features, improve performance or provide indefinite full support. Avoid indefinite unsupported use for banking, sensitive work or an internet-exposed business system.

Consider Windows 365 for managed organizations

Microsoft positions Windows 365 as another transition route. A cloud PC can help a business centralize management or defer local replacement, but it requires dependable internet, tolerable latency and an acceptable recurring subscription. Validate line-of-business applications, Intune, VPN, security-agent and compliance requirements first. (Microsoft’s transition options)

The bottom line

Microsoft is using the Windows 10 deadline to create a refresh cycle and is positioning ARM-based Copilot+ laptops as a premium, AI-forward option. ARM is compelling for mainstream mobile productivity, quiet designs and battery-focused buyers. It is not a universal compatibility solution, and it is not required to leave Windows 10. Upgrade an eligible, healthy PC when cost matters; choose x86 when legacy software, gaming or peripherals are decisive; choose ARM only after your own application and device checklist passes.
