How TabTale’s Children’s Apps Reached 220 Million Downloads—and Raised $12 Million in 2013

TabTale’s 2013 milestone combined more than 220 million reported portfolio downloads with a $12 million venture round—not $12 million in app revenue.

In October–November 2013, Israeli publisher TabTale said its portfolio had passed 220 million cumulative downloads across more than 240 children’s apps. Around the same time, it raised a $12 million Series B led by Qualcomm Ventures and Magma Venture Partners, bringing reported total funding to $13.5 million. The $12 million was venture capital, not app revenue; the download total was a company-reported portfolio figure, not 220 million unique children.

The 2013 TabTale story in one view

VentureBeat’s October 30, 2013 report and a November 7 TechCrunch article portrayed TabTale as a fast-growing publisher of interactive books, games and educational apps. The company, founded in 2010 and headquartered in Israel, said its catalog had generated more than 220 million downloads and reached over 20 million monthly active users. Those figures were current to late 2013 and were repeated by contemporary technology publications, but the available reporting does not show an independent audit.

The financing was a separate event. TechCrunch reported a $12 million Series B co-led by Qualcomm Ventures and Magma Venture Partners, with participation from Vintage Investment Ventures and existing or private investors. The round reportedly lifted cumulative capital raised to $13.5 million.

VentureBeat’s account said CEO Sagi Schliesser described TabTale as already profitable, but neither that article nor the corroborating coverage supplied revenue, profit, margin or audited financial statements.

What TabTale actually published

TabTale was not a single-game studio. It used a portfolio model: release many inexpensive titles, observe store performance, and put more resources behind concepts that gained traction. The 2013 catalog combined entertainment, pretend play, interactive reading and explicitly educational products.

Examples reported in 2013

  • Design It, a fashion and makeover title.
  • Doctor X – Med School, a medical role-playing game.
  • An ice-cream-maker game and other cooking or chef activities.
  • Princess-party, wedding, dress-up, childcare and makeover apps.
  • Interactive versions of Little Red Riding Hood and Peter Pan.
  • Holiday and religious material, including Moses and Passover and Noah’s Ark.

These names describe a 2013 snapshot. The sources do not establish that each app remains available, unchanged or supported in current iOS or Android stores.

What “220 million downloads” does—and does not—mean

The 220 million number was a cumulative total for TabTale’s portfolio, not a single blockbuster app. It also cannot be treated as 220 million people. One household could download several TabTale titles, reinstall an app, or use multiple devices. The separate “more than 20 million monthly active users” figure was also a company claim; the reports do not define whether users were counted once across the portfolio or could appear in several app audiences.

Why investors funded a children’s-app portfolio

Mobile stores gave a small publisher global distribution without the manufacturing, shelf space and retail relationships required for traditional children’s products. A large catalog also created several shots at discovery: organic store traffic, paid user acquisition, cross-promotion between apps and occasional breakout titles.

Scale could matter even when no individual app dominated. A publisher with hundreds of releases had more data about themes and mechanics, a larger audience to cross-promote to, and a platform from which to negotiate with licensors, advertisers, distribution partners or acquisition targets. This is an interpretation of the strategy implied by the financing and acquisition activity, not a disclosed investor return model.

How TabTale planned to use the round

  • Expand the team.
  • Acquire additional game companies.
  • Build a larger position in children’s and family mobile content, potentially as a consolidator.

TabTale had acquired Kids Games Club, the educational-app publisher associated with Paint Sparkles. Contemporary reports disagree on whether that deal closed in January or March 2013, so the month is best left unresolved. Both accounts describe acquisitions as an important part of TabTale’s growth plan.

Why the app concepts were easy to scale

The products described in the coverage rely on recognizable, repeatable activities: changing an outfit, preparing food, caring for a character, planning a party, or completing a short story. Those mechanics fit brief touchscreen sessions and could be adapted into themed variations. Familiar characters and visual feedback also made the concepts understandable across markets without requiring much text.

That design logic explains why a portfolio could grow faster than a traditional book list, but it does not prove that every title was educational, highly retained or financially successful. The reports provide no title-by-title downloads, conversion rates, advertising yields or in-app-purchase data.

How to read the “girly pink” label

“Girly pink” came from VentureBeat’s headline and reflected the prominence of fashion, princess, wedding, makeover, childcare and domestic role-play themes. It is a description of visible positioning, not a neutral summary of the whole catalog. TabTale also published books, medical and culinary games, holiday and religious content, animal themes and education apps.

The framing raises a real product question: gender-coded fantasy can make a concept immediately legible and commercially distinctive, while also narrowing who is invited to identify with it. The contemporary coverage did not provide audience research showing that children universally preferred these themes, nor did it establish that the broader catalog shared the same gender emphasis.

The ranking claims need their qualifiers

App-store rankings were another signal of traction, but the two contemporary articles described different measurements:

  • VentureBeat said App Annie ranked TabTale No. 7 among publishers for monthly iOS game downloads.
  • TechCrunch described TabTale as the eighth-largest publisher by download value in September.

Those statements may refer to different categories, platforms, metrics or snapshots. They should not be merged into a claim that TabTale was simply “the No. 7 mobile publisher.”

What the evidence cannot prove

  • There is no supplied, independently audited revenue or profit figure.
  • The 220 million downloads and 20 million monthly users were company-reported metrics.
  • Downloads cannot be converted into unique users, paying customers or long-term engagement.
  • The reports do not provide reliable app-by-app performance, retention or monetization data.
  • Current availability, age ratings, advertising, privacy disclosures and in-app-purchase safeguards for the named 2013 apps are not established here.

What happened after TabTale’s 2013 moment?

Later company materials use the CrazyLabs brand. Its current site presents a casual, hyper-casual and hybrid mobile-game publisher, while a December 2024 company post celebrated seven billion downloads. Those later figures describe a much larger and different portfolio and are not directly comparable with TabTale’s 2013 children’s-app metrics.

For the historical event, the defensible conclusion is narrower: TabTale had significant early distribution, a broad children’s-app pipeline, reported profitability and enough momentum to attract a $12 million institutional round. Those indicators show traction, not a complete financial account or proof that every product succeeded.
