Genia, a Los Angeles construction-technology startup, announced a $3 million pre-seed round that it says closed in February 2025. Pi Labs led the financing, joined by Amplify.LA, Boost VC, Dorm Room Fund, Suffolk Technologies, Y Startup Index, Joe Chen and Scale AI executives. The money is intended to expand Genia’s customer base, develop the product and broaden support for concrete and steel-frame structures.
The product announced as Genia Structural CoPilot is now presented publicly as the Genia Structural AI Agent. Genia says it can turn architectural drawings into structural options, apply engineering and code checks, and export drawings and calculation reports. Those are company claims—not independent proof that every output is safe, code-compliant or acceptable to a building department.
What Genia announced
Genia’s February 2025 announcement described a pre-seed financing rather than a later-stage seed round or Series A. The company said Pi Labs led the round and listed Amplify.LA, Boost VC, Dorm Room Fund, Suffolk Technologies, Y Startup Index, Joe Chen and Scale AI executives as participants. Genia said the funding would support geographic expansion, product development and additional concrete and steel-frame capabilities. Genia’s funding announcement also identified the founding team as Zhihao Zhao (CEO), Robin Li (COO), Houtao Wang (CTO) and Peter Dai (chief scientist). It describes Zhao as a former Amazon product executive and Li as a former Arup structural engineer.
Genia later announced the product under the Structural AI Agent name in partnership with the National Council of Structural Engineers Associations (NCSEA). That branding change matters: the funding story describes an early product, while public product and pricing pages in 2026 describe a changing commercial service.

Why structural design is a target for AI
Early structural work sits between an architect’s intent and buildable documentation. Engineers must select a structural system, establish load paths, size members, test alternatives, coordinate openings and levels, and produce drawings and calculations for review and permitting. Much of that work is repetitive, but the consequences of a wrong assumption are serious.
Genia’s pitch is to automate portions of that translation and iteration so engineers can spend more time on judgment-heavy decisions. A funding article associated with the company cites examples of very large engineering workloads, including claims about a 20-story tower requiring more than 15 engineers, 18 months and 750,000 manual calculations. Those figures are attributed claims, not established industry-wide benchmarks, and should not be used as universal productivity statistics.
How the Structural AI Agent workflow works
1. Upload and parse the architectural model
Genia says users upload architectural drawings in CAD or BIM formats. The system identifies walls, windows, doors, openings and stairs, then lets the user review and correct the parsed model. The public onboarding documentation is narrower, stating that its editor exclusively supports DWG architectural-plan uploads. In practice, supported formats may depend on the account, workflow or product version; verify the current documentation before committing a project. See Genia’s onboarding guidance.
2. Generate and compare structural options
The company says the agent produces multiple calculated structural options and allows comparison by material cost, constructability, structural performance, material quantities and environmental considerations. The 2025 announcement referred to as many as five options, while the current site uses different language, including “3 codes-compliant designs.” Treat the number as version-dependent rather than a fixed product limit.

3. Edit, review and export
Users can interactively edit a selected design, generate structural drawings and download calculation reports, according to Genia’s current product description. Genia also uses terms such as “permit-ready” and “construction-ready.” Those labels do not replace the licensed engineer’s review, professional seal or the authority having jurisdiction’s decision.
What “physics-validated” means—and what it does not
Genia is positioning itself differently from a general-purpose image or text model that can produce plausible-looking beams and columns. Its materials describe rules-based structural analysis, physics-based calculations, material data and building-code checks. That is best understood as a constrained generative-design and analysis workflow.
“Validated” can describe several different thresholds:
- Engineering constraints: mathematical or physical checks under defined assumptions.
- Code checks: comparison with selected code provisions and editions.
- Professional review: a licensed engineer verifies inputs, assumptions, results and details.
- Permit acceptance: a jurisdiction accepts a particular submission.
- Field performance: a constructed building performs as intended despite real-world changes.
Genia’s public claims support the first two categories in selected workflows. They do not establish universal code compliance, permit approval, completed-building safety or permission to practice engineering without a licensed professional.

Data, materials and claimed traction
The funding coverage says Genia trained its system with open-source designs, client designs and simulated designs produced by its engineering team. It also describes a materials database developed through supplier relationships, including Weyerhaeuser’s ForteWEB and Simpson Strong-Tie. Those relationships do not amount to blanket certification of every material combination or generated design.
Genia says it has worked with Suffolk Construction on adaptive-reuse projects, received NCSEA support for its launch and reached more than 200 structural-engineering firms. “200+ firms” is a company-reported figure; public materials do not establish how many are paying customers, active users, pilots or partners. Partnership is not the same as independent benchmark validation or building-department approval.
Evidence versus marketing claims

| Up to 20% material savings | Listed on Genia’s website | Potential result, not a guaranteed project saving |
| Physics-validated and code-related checks | Described in company materials | Depends on assumptions, supported materials, jurisdiction and plan |
| 200+ firms | Current company claim | Customer status and usage level are not disclosed |
Current pricing and availability
Genia’s public pricing is inconsistent, so buyers should check the live purchase flow and record the date. The current pricing page lists pay-as-you-go credits, says one credit equals $1, and shows annual plans at $9,000 and $14,400. It also indicates that capability can vary by material and code family, with some options marked early access or custom. See the pricing page.
Other public pages show different figures: the homepage lists $99 and $299 monthly plans, while older documentation lists a $99.99 Professional plan and a $4,999-per-month Team plan. A June 2026 company post says Genia moved away from subscriptions and free trials toward sample projects and pay-per-project pricing. These pages may reflect different dates or account types; no single figure should be treated as a definitive price without confirmation. Genia’s pricing-model explanation provides the company’s rationale.

Questions a serious buyer should ask
Engineering scope
- Which materials, building heights and structural systems are enabled for the intended account?
- Are gravity, lateral and foundation design all included?
- Which U.S. or international codes and editions are supported?
- How are seismic, wind, snow, fire and site-specific conditions entered?
Interoperability and auditability
- Does the workflow accept DWG, IFC, RVT, PDF or other formats for this plan?
- Are Revit or other exports available, and do they preserve layers, metadata and coordinates?
- Can engineers inspect load cases, combinations, assumptions, failed checks and governing members?
- Are revisions logged, outputs reproducible and client files protected?
Professional responsibility
Ask who verifies the model, who seals the documents, how unsupported conditions are rejected and how changes after export are tracked. A tool that generates a drawing quickly still leaves responsibility for assumptions, design decisions, coordination and construction changes with the professionals of record.
Independent reader supportYour contribution helps us test, update, and keep practical guides available for everyone.Where Genia may fit—and where it may not
Genia appears most promising for early feasibility studies, repetitive residential or small-building work, adaptive-reuse option generation and firms that already employ licensed engineers. It may be a poor fit for highly irregular buildings, bridges, dams, industrial facilities, unusual materials, unsupported jurisdictions or teams that need mature enterprise integrations and long-term version stability.
Automated parsing also has predictable failure modes: ambiguous linework, missing dimensions, inconsistent layers, unclear openings, existing-condition irregularities and mismatched plans and elevations. Genia’s own requirement that users review and correct the parsed model confirms that upload is not a zero-review step.

Bottom line for engineering firms
Genia represents a serious attempt to move construction AI from visual generation toward constrained structural design. Its value will depend less on producing a fast-looking plan than on demonstrable code coverage, transparent calculations, reliable interoperability, data protection and acceptance by engineers and authorities. Treat the Structural AI Agent as a potential accelerator for option generation and repetitive work—not as an autonomous replacement for licensed structural judgment.
