On July 27, 2011, DeNA and its U.S. subsidiary ngmoco began a staged international launch of Mobage, a mobile social-gaming platform, on Android. The initial English-language rollout covered the United States, Canada, the United Kingdom, Ireland, New Zealand and Australia; China received a separate localized launch. DeNA called it the first stage of a global expansion—not a release in every country or on every mobile platform.
What launched in July 2011?
DeNA’s announcement concerned an international version of Mobage for Android, distributed through the then-named Android Market. The six English-speaking markets were the United States, Canada, the United Kingdom, Ireland, New Zealand and Australia. China was included through a distinct localized service. DeNA said other territories and mobile platforms were planned, but those plans should not be confused with availability on launch day. DeNA’s launch announcement and its Japanese announcement identifying the six countries describe the rollout as an initial phase.
“Across the globe” captured the ambition, not the geographic extent of the release. The distinction matters: this was an Android-first launch in specified markets, not a simultaneous worldwide launch. Google’s app store was called Android Market in 2011; it was not yet Google Play.
Mobage was a platform, not a single game
Mobage combined a game-discovery service with player identity, social features and a commercial platform for participating games. A player could use a common identity across supported titles, find games, interact with other players and take part in rankings or other game-centered social activity. DeNA described the model as an “interest graph”: connections could form around shared games and entertainment interests rather than only around people a user already knew.

Contemporary coverage likened its social layer to Facebook for games, but that analogy is incomplete. Mobage also aimed to be a game portal, distribution channel, developer-services layer and virtual-goods economy. Its Chinese launch materials list wall posts, direct messages, interest-based forums and paid virtual items. Those details describe the localized China service; they do not establish that every feature or payment method was identical in every market. DeNA’s China announcement outlines those functions.
What players were offered
- A shared identity across participating games.
- Ways to discover games and interact with other players through posts, messages, forums, rankings and related social features.
- Free-to-play games with optional purchases of virtual items, where supported.
The intended benefit was continuity between games: the platform could help players find another title and carry social connections with them. The launch materials describe that proposition, not a guarantee that every player, title or feature would be available in every territory.
What developers were offered
- Access to international distribution and an existing platform audience.
- Shared identity, social functions, discovery and cross-promotion.
- Monetization services, including virtual goods and advertising infrastructure.
- Development technology intended to make releases across devices and regions more manageable.
DeNA promoted ngCore as a way to build for multiple mobile operating systems from a common code base. That was a development goal, not proof that games needed no device-specific adaptation, testing or localization. The platform’s value also depended on developers choosing it and players continuing to use it; the announcement established the offer, not the eventual adoption or commercial outcome.

Why DeNA paired Mobage with ngmoco
DeNA brought an established Japanese social-gaming business and experience with feature phones, community operations and virtual economies. Ngmoco brought U.S. smartphone-game development and publishing experience, developer relationships and its Plus+ social network. The combination was meant to connect DeNA’s Japanese model to Western smartphone markets rather than simply put a new label on an unchanged Japanese service.

These were company-reported platform figures, not a count of monthly active users or international smartphone accounts. DeNA also reported sales exceeding $1.3 billion for the fiscal year ended March 2011; that was company-wide sales, not a figure established as Mobage revenue. The company’s launch release gives those figures.
Before the global Mobage branding, ngmoco operated Plus+. DeNA said Plus+ had more than 17.5 million registered users and 178 games when it was integrated into the international Mobage strategy. Those are reported registrations and catalog figures, not evidence that all users were active or all games remained available after integration. DeNA’s announcement on Plus+ and ngCore describes the transition.

Contemporary reporting put DeNA’s acquisition of ngmoco at up to $403 million. “Up to” is important: the reported figure should not be read as a verified final cash payment. The acquisition gave DeNA a ready-made Western smartphone operation and a bridge to developers and players outside Japan. PocketGamer.biz’s contemporaneous report gives the acquisition context.
What games supported the rollout?
Launch coverage named a mix of ngmoco, DeNA and third-party titles, including We Rule, Tap Town, Zombie Farm, Pocket God, Haypi Kingdom, Pocket Frogs, Paper Toss, Touch Hockey, Zoo Land, Putt Putt Penguin, Sundae Maker, Texas Poker and Solitaire. GamesBeat reported that more than 100 social games were in development for Mobage. That was a pipeline figure, not 100 titles confirmed live on July 27, and the named games should not be assumed to have been available in every launch country. GamesBeat’s launch coverage lists titles and discusses the development pipeline.

In China, DeNA used the name 夢宝谷, rendered in its materials as “Meng Bao Gu.” The Android launch included localized versions of Ninja Royale and Aqua Collection, with the company planning to reach ten titles by the end of August 2011. DeNA had already been testing browser-based Mobage services through its local subsidiary, so the smartphone release expanded an existing trial rather than introducing the brand there from nothing. The planned ten-title catalog was a target, not confirmation that the titles all arrived on schedule. DeNA’s China launch announcement describes the service and its initial games.

- Hall Effect Joysticks and Triggers
- Refined bumpers and D-pad. Light and tactile.
- 2 Pro back paddle buttons
- Profile button. Wear-resistant metal joystick rings. Turbo function.
China also followed a different platform timeline. DeNA’s later company history records the international and China launches in July 2011 and the China iOS launch in November 2011. That history helps distinguish the Android start from subsequent expansion; it does not make the July launch cross-platform. DeNA’s corporate history records those milestones.

The initial international consumer release focused on Android. DeNA said other mobile platforms would follow, and its China materials planned an iOS app later. The company’s ngCore pitch concerned development across mobile operating systems, while Mobage’s first international availability remained Android-based. A development tool’s intended reach and a consumer service’s actual launch availability are different things.
Android also meant reliance on the distribution rules and reach of the Android Market in each market. A global platform had to solve more than software deployment: languages, payment systems, local regulations, device variation and player expectations differed by country. Japan’s feature-phone audience and smartphone markets abroad were related strategic assets, not one uniform market or necessarily one technically identical service.

The competitive fight was for the layer around games
Mobage entered a crowded contest involving GREE and OpenFeint, Apple’s Game Center, Facebook’s mobile gaming efforts, Electronic Arts’ Origin and app-store discovery. These services and channels competed for overlapping functions: connecting players, helping them find games and giving developers routes to reach and monetize an audience. GamesBeat’s contemporary coverage situates Mobage among these rivals.
DeNA’s strategic bet was not merely that it could offer a large catalog. It sought a position between players and individual games: identity, discovery, social relationships, cross-promotion and payments. If users and developers adopted the same platform, each additional game could make the network more useful. But that network effect was not automatic. Mobage faced the cold-start problem of building enough local users and friends, while persuading developers that the added distribution and services justified joining another platform.
Why the “global launch” needs a qualifier
The July 2011 rollout was global in direction, limited in release. It covered six English-speaking countries on Android plus a separate localized Android service in China, with other places and platforms planned. DeNA’s Japanese Mobage audience, ngmoco’s Plus+ users and the international launch should not be collapsed into one figure: the sources do not establish a single active worldwide user count for the new service.
The launch is best understood as DeNA’s attempt to export a Japanese mobile social-gaming model through a Western smartphone operation. Its platform proposition joined games, social interaction, discovery and monetization, while the staged rollout exposed the practical challenge: a shared platform had to earn relevance market by market.
DeNA’s 2011 annual report provides broader company context for its overseas strategy and the distinction between Japanese and international capabilities.
