Trump Reposts Video Claiming He’s ‘Purposely Crashing’ the Stock Market

Trump’s April 4, 2025 Truth Social repost amplified a video claiming the market was being crashed on purpose. The claim and a purported Warren Buffett endorsement were not substantiated.

President Donald Trump did not make the video’s claim in his own words: on April 4, 2025, he reposted a Truth Social video that said he was crashing the stock market “by 20% this month” on purpose. The video presented that as a tariff strategy, but the repost does not establish that Trump deliberately engineered the selloff or that the strategy would work.

What did Trump share?

The reposted video argued that a stock-market crash was intentional and would help force lower interest rates, weaken the dollar, reduce prices and support Trump’s tariff program. RealClearPolitics preserved the video’s wording: “Trump is crashing the stock market by 20% this month, but he’s doing it on purpose.” Those were the video’s claims, not independently demonstrated facts.

The distinction matters: Trump amplified a video making an intentional-crash argument. That is not the same as a verified statement by Trump explaining that he had deliberately caused the market decline.

Did Warren Buffett endorse Trump’s tariff strategy?

No. The video used footage of Warren Buffett in a way that implied he praised Trump’s economic moves, but the attribution was false, according to the Associated Press. Berkshire Hathaway said: “There are reports currently circulating on social media (including Twitter, Facebook and TikTok) regarding comments allegedly made by Warren E. Buffett. All such reports are false.” AP also reported that Buffett was not commenting on the economy, markets or tariffs before Berkshire Hathaway’s annual meeting.

How much did the market fall?

Associated Press reported that the selloff included a 6% drop in the S&P 500, a 2,231-point (5.5%) decline in the Dow Jones Industrial Average, and a 5.8% decline in the Nasdaq Composite. AP also reported that the Nasdaq was down more than 20% from its December record. These figures describe the market move; they do not establish its cause or prove intent.

Forbes reported that the S&P 500 fell 4.8% on Thursday and 6% on Friday, and that the 10-year Treasury yield was above 4% on Friday. The sharp declines unfolded amid Trump’s tariff announcements, with AP describing the selloff as intensifying after China retaliated against the tariffs.

Why did stocks plunge around the time of the repost?

The market was reacting to tariff-related developments, including China’s retaliation, during the same period Trump shared the video. The timing helps explain why the post drew attention, but it does not show that reposting the video caused the losses—or that Trump intentionally caused them. The video’s account of lower rates, a weaker dollar and lower prices was an argument, not proof that those outcomes had occurred or would follow.

What is established—and what is not?

  • Established: Trump reposted the video on Truth Social on April 4, 2025, and the video claimed the market was being crashed deliberately.
  • Established: Buffett did not make the remarks attributed to him in the video, according to Berkshire Hathaway and AP.
  • Established: Major U.S. stock indexes fell sharply during the tariff-driven selloff, and AP reported that China’s retaliation intensified it.
  • Not established: That Trump deliberately engineered the market decline, that the repost disclosed a proven economic plan, or that the plan lowered interest rates, weakened the dollar or reduced prices.
