A Mercado Livre checkout and a direct Pix to a seller do not have the same protection or recovery path.
The patterns below are recurring fraud scenarios, not a statistical ranking. Verify every transaction in the Mercado Livre or Mercado Pago app opened independently.
Why the payment route matters
Protection depends on what actually happened, not on whether a message uses Mercado Livre or Mercado Pago branding.
| Transaction | What to verify | Typical remedy |
|---|---|---|
| Mercado Livre checkout | Order in account history, Mercado Pago payment and platform tracking | Platform complaint or Compra Garantida, subject to terms |
| Mercado Pago checkout on another website | Eligible online purchase, logged-in account and program terms | Separate Mercado Pago Compra Garantida rules |
| Direct Pix or bank transfer | Recipient, amount and transaction receipt | Bank fraud report and possible MED request; marketplace protection may not apply |
| QR-code payment | Recipient name and amount before confirmation | Depends on the payment program; Mercado Livre excludes certain QR-code payments from Compra Garantida |
| Payment link | Domain, recipient, amount and matching order | Only the specific transaction’s terms apply |
Mercado Livre says buyer and seller communications can remain in a recorded platform chat, payments are processed through Mercado Pago and shipping can be tracked in the system (Mercado Livre security guidance). A branded link or message outside that record is not proof of a legitimate order.

Scams aimed at buyers
Requests to pay outside Mercado Livre
A seller may promise a discount, claim checkout is unavailable, send a QR code or ask for a deposit to reserve an item. If you pay by direct Pix, transfer or an external link, the transaction may fall outside Mercado Livre’s dispute and Compra Garantida rules. Mercado Livre expressly lists payments by QR code or outside the platform, money transfers and other excluded situations on its Compra Garantida terms.
- Do not leave the platform to obtain a discount or “unlock” shipping.
- Confirm that the order appears in your account before paying.
- Ask questions through platform messaging, not only WhatsApp.
Fake listings, counterfeits and empty or incorrect packages
Fraudulent listings often combine an unusually low price, a new account, stock photographs, vague specifications and pressure to move the conversation elsewhere. A counterfeit, prohibited product, misleading description or missing item can be deliberate fraud, but a defective or late product may instead be a platform or consumer dispute. Save the listing, seller profile, chat and unboxing evidence, then use the appropriate complaint or return route.
Phishing, fake support and fake refund messages
Emails, SMS messages, WhatsApp chats and social posts may claim that a payment failed, a refund is waiting, an account will be suspended or a package is held at customs. Their goal can be credential theft, card theft, malware installation or account takeover. Mercado Pago advises checking that official emails end in @mercadopago.com and warns against unsolicited links, attachments and programs requested by supposed agents (Mercado Pago security).
- Do not reply, click or download.
- Open the app or type the official website address yourself.
- Look for the order, refund or alert in your account.
- If it is absent from the account, treat the message as fraudulent and report it.
Fake delivery or customs fees
A message may demand an extra payment before delivery. Check shipping status inside the order rather than following the supplied link. An external fee request that has no matching in-app event is a warning sign.
Recommended Free Tools
Account takeover
A stolen password, intercepted one-time code, compromised email or stolen phone can enable unauthorized purchases, withdrawals, address changes and fraudulent messages to your contacts. Never provide a password or verification code, install remote-control software or transfer money to “unlock” an account. Use Mercado Pago’s security center and account-in-danger help from a trusted device.
Scams aimed at sellers
Fake Pix receipts
An edited receipt can look convincing while no money has arrived. Mercado Pago identifies false Pix receipts as a recurring fraud pattern (guidance on false Pix; Pix scams).
Open Mercado Pago or your bank independently and match the transaction, amount, recipient, timestamp and status. No confirmed credit means no shipment or handover.
Overpayment and refund requests
A supposed buyer claims to have paid too much and asks you to return the difference. The original payment may be fictitious, reversed or made with a compromised account. Do not refund from a screenshot or message; use the platform’s own refund process only after the payment is independently settled. Mercado Pago describes this as the extra-value-and-refund scam (social-commerce security guidance).
Impersonated support and pressured pickup
Fraudsters may request a code, password, card details, screen sharing, remote-access software or a transfer to release funds. Others send a courier or create an emergency and demand handover before payment. Initiate support from inside the official app; never release goods without a confirmed balance and matching order.
Chargebacks after delivery
A buyer can receive an item and later dispute a card transaction. Seller protection is conditional on the transaction type and program requirements. Keep the listing, buyer messages, serial number, product and packaging photographs, shipping label, tracking and delivery confirmation. Mercado Pago says qualifying disputes may be covered when the seller proves correct shipment and delivery, with each case reviewed under the program’s conditions (seller protection guidance).
How to verify before buying or shipping
Buyer checklist
- Use the official app or manually typed website.
- Check reputation, completed sales, reviews and listing history.
- Compare prices and read condition, warranty, accessories, compatibility, voltage and delivery terms.
- Keep questions and agreements in platform chat.
- Never use a seller-supplied external payment link or separate Pix for a discount or reservation.
- Confirm the order in account history and save the listing, seller details and payment record.
- For expensive goods, record unboxing and check serial numbers immediately.
Seller checklist
- Open Mercado Pago yourself.
- Check the activity or sales record for the exact order, amount, buyer and status.
- Wait for actual credit; ignore screenshots, emails and WhatsApp claims.
- Ship only to the platform-specified address and method.
- Photograph the item, serial number, packaging and label; retain tracking and delivery proof.
- Do not return money until the original payment is verified and settled.
What Compra Garantida covers—and what it does not
Compra Garantida is conditional protection, not universal insurance. The Mercado Livre program lists qualifying cases such as non-delivery, regret and product problems, with deadlines and category-specific conditions. Its current page states up to 28 days from purchase for a product that does not arrive and up to 30 days from receipt for certain regret, defect or “different from advertised” claims. It excludes, among other situations, payments by QR code or outside Mercado Livre, money transfers and excluded categories: Mercado Livre terms.
A separate Mercado Pago Compra Garantida page describes eligible online purchases made while logged into Mercado Pago, a 14-day period to report non-receipt and exclusion of Pix payments in that program. Services, subscriptions, digital products and other categories may also be excluded. These are different purchase contexts, so read the terms shown for the specific transaction.

What to do immediately after a scam
Pix fraud
- Contact your bank or payment institution immediately through its official channel.
- Request the Mecanismo Especial de Devolução (MED) and report fraud, not merely buyer’s remorse.
- Save the transaction ID, recipient details, messages, URLs, phone numbers, listing and profile.
- File a police report and notify Mercado Pago if its account or transaction was involved.
- Change exposed passwords, secure email and phone access, and block compromised cards.
The Banco Central says MED requests should be made as quickly as possible and within 80 days, but it is not an automatic refund. Investigation and available funds determine recovery. It generally does not cover a wrong-recipient Pix, ordinary product disagreement or every case involving an innocent third party (Banco Central Pix security; Banco Central fraud FAQ).
Card fraud
Freeze or cancel the card, dispute the charge through the issuer, secure Mercado Pago and email accounts, and preserve evidence. A card dispute does not automatically resolve a separate marketplace complaint.
Compromised account
Use the official security route from a trusted device, change the password, secure the associated email and phone, review purchases, cards, Pix keys, withdrawals and addresses, and report unauthorized activity. Warn contacts if the account sent fraudulent messages.
Merchandise already shipped
Do not confront or locate the recipient. Preserve shipping records, report to Mercado Livre or Mercado Pago and police, and answer any payment-dispute case through its official channel with proof of shipment and delivery.
Scam, platform dispute or defective purchase?
| Situation | Likely route |
|---|---|
| Direct payment outside Mercado Livre | Bank or payment provider, police report and possible MED for Pix fraud |
| Non-delivery in a platform purchase | Mercado Livre complaint and applicable Compra Garantida process |
| Counterfeit or materially different item | Platform complaint, evidence, return process and possibly Procon |
| Fake Pix receipt | Do not ship; report attempted fraud |
| Legitimate card payment later disputed | Seller protection or chargeback process with shipment evidence |
| Unauthorized account transaction | Account-security, bank or card issuer and platform reports |
| Pix sent to wrong recipient | Usually not fraud; MED may not apply |
| Simple quality disagreement | Commercial complaint, not automatically a scam |
Reporting and escalation
Start with Mercado Livre or Mercado Pago’s in-app support, then contact the bank or card issuer. For Pix fraud, request MED promptly, file a police report and retain the protocol. If unresolved, consider Procon, the Banco Central complaint channel or legal advice. A 2024 Procon-SP report recorded 5,732 complaints involving the Mercado Livre group across purchases, loans and Pix transfers; that is a complaint total, not a confirmed-scam count (Procon-SP report).
