Global PC shipments fell sharply in the first quarter of 2023, but the exact decline depends on the tracker. IDC estimated a 29.0% year-over-year drop to 56.9 million traditional PCs; Canalys estimated a 33% fall to 54 million desktop and notebook shipments. The figures describe a post-pandemic market correction and channel inventory reset—not a sudden end to people’s need for computers.
What the Q1 2023 figures measure
Both figures compare January–March 2023 with the same quarter in 2022. They count shipments into the market, not a direct tally of purchases by households or businesses. IDC’s estimate covers traditional PCs; Canalys’s covers desktops and notebooks and describes sell-in shipments.
“Nearly a third” is a rounded summary of two estimates, not one universally agreed measurement. The reports were preliminary estimates published in April 2023, and the categories and methods used by the trackers are not identical. Tablets should not be added to either total based on these figures.
| Tracker | Market definition | Q1 2023 shipments | Change from Q1 2022 | Source and caveat |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| IDC | Traditional PCs | 56.9 million | Down 29.0% | IDC’s Q1 2023 tracker report; preliminary estimate. |
| Canalys | Desktops and notebooks | 54 million | Down 33% | Canalys’s Q1 2023 release; sell-in shipment estimate. |
The totals are close enough to tell the same broad story, but they are not interchangeable. The firms can differ in market definitions, data sources, vendor classifications, and estimation methods; the available figures do not establish that one tracker was wrong.

Why shipments fell so sharply
Pandemic buying pulled demand forward
Remote work, online learning, and home entertainment drove unusually strong PC buying in 2020 and 2021. That left many households, schools, and organizations with relatively new machines by early 2023. When those computers remained serviceable, replacement could wait, and the comparison with the pandemic-era buying period was especially tough.
Households and businesses became more cautious
Inflation and economic uncertainty put pressure on consumer budgets, making a new laptop or desktop easier to defer if an existing one still handled everyday tasks. Businesses also faced more cautious IT spending amid higher interest rates and concerns about growth. Many had already equipped hybrid workers, reducing the urgency of another broad refresh.

Channel inventory amplified the decline
After a period of supply constraints and backlogs, the industry had excess inventory to clear. Distributors, retailers, and resellers could sell stock already on hand rather than place fresh orders with manufacturers. That is why a decline in shipments can be steeper than a decline in end-user purchases. Canalys identified inventory clearance as a key priority in Q1 2023.
Notebooks fell further than desktops
Canalys estimated notebook shipments at 41.8 million units, down 34% year over year, and desktop shipments at 12.1 million, down 28%. Notebooks were both the larger category and the one with the steeper decline, so their weakness carried substantial weight in the combined result. These are Canalys estimates, not a category breakdown supplied by IDC.

How the leading vendors were affected
The contraction reached the major vendors, but their percentages reflected differing product cycles and exposure to consumer, commercial, and channel demand. Lenovo remained the shipment-volume leader. IDC’s preliminary figures, as reported by Thurrott’s contemporaneous summary, put Apple’s Mac shipments down 40.5% year over year, the steepest percentage decline among the leading vendors in that estimate.
That percentage does not establish that Apple lost the most units, nor that Macs had become uniquely unpopular. A strong prior-year comparison, normalization after demand associated with the Apple Silicon transition, and Apple’s premium positioning may have influenced the result, but the cited estimate alone cannot isolate those factors. Lenovo, HP, Dell, and Asus also faced substantial declines as consumer, business, and channel demand weakened; the available figures here do not support a like-for-like ranking of their declines.

Shipments are not the same as PC use
- Shipments, or sell-in: New machines moving from manufacturers into distributors, retailers, or resellers.
- Sell-through: Units sold onward by retailers or resellers to end users.
- Demand: The willingness or need of households and organizations to buy new devices.
- Usage: Whether people continue using computers they already own.
A shipment slowdown can reflect weaker demand and channel partners ordering less while they clear stock. It does not, by itself, show that PC usage collapsed. Nor does a unit decline establish what happened to vendor revenue or profit: those depend on prices, product mix, and other financial factors not measured by shipment counts.

Canalys said Q1 2023 marked the fourth consecutive quarter of double-digit year-over-year shipment declines. In its April 2023 outlook, the firm expected Q1 to be the year’s largest decline, with recovery beginning in the second half of 2023 and gaining momentum in 2024. That was a forecast available at the time, not a guarantee or proof of what later occurred.

What the downturn meant for consumers and businesses
For PC buyers
As vendors and retailers worked through inventory, discounts and improved availability were possible. The shipment data alone cannot show which model, category, or individual offer was a good value; a weak market quarter is not the same as every PC being a bargain.
For business and IT planning
Delayed refreshes can shift replacement needs into later budget cycles. Procurement teams weighing a postponement need to account for device condition, support lifecycle, and workforce requirements—not just the short-term possibility of lower prices.
For investors and industry watchers
A single shipment quarter is best read alongside inventory normalization, commercial refresh activity, and subsequent shipment data. Unit shipments reveal volume, but not revenue, margins, or the financial health of any individual vendor.
