1Password Is Getting More Expensive: What the Increase Means for Your Renewal

1Password’s reported U.S. renewal prices rose in 2026, but public price displays differ. Here’s how to check your bill and decide whether to stay or switch.

Yes. 1Password’s reported U.S. price increase began affecting eligible renewals on March 27, 2026. The reported annual increase is about $12 for Individual and $12 for Families, but the amount you will actually pay depends on your plan, billing channel, region, and account. Check the renewal amount on your own account rather than relying on a headline percentage or a public price table.

How much more does 1Password cost?

Figures reported for U.S. consumer renewals show different percentage increases by plan: about 33% for Individual and 20% for Families. These are reported renewal prices, not a guarantee of what every account will be charged.

Plan Reported old annual price Reported new annual price Increase Approximate change
Individual $35.88 $47.88 $12 per year 33%
Families $59.88 $71.88 $12 per year 20%

These old and new amounts were reported for U.S. subscribers by TechRadar and discussed alongside customer-service information in the Privacy Guides community. The commonly repeated “30% increase” is only a rough shorthand: it overstates the reported Families increase and understates the Individual increase.

Why public price displays do not settle your renewal price

1Password’s U.S. pricing page displays Individual at $2.99 per month billed annually or $3.99 billed monthly, and Families at $4.49 per month billed annually or $5.99 billed monthly. Multiplying the annual-billing monthly equivalents by 12 gives $35.88 and $53.88. Separately, the personal-pricing page describes annual prices of about $48 for Individual and $72 for Families. The latter amounts align with the reported new renewal figures, while the pricing table’s annual-billing equivalents do not.

Because the public pages present different figures, they are not enough to determine the amount on every existing account. Account-specific renewal charges, promotional pricing, billing channel, regional pricing, and taxes may affect the amount. Treat the price shown under your account’s Billing page or on your renewal notice as the actionable figure. See 1Password’s pricing page and personal pricing page.

What does 1Password list for each plan?

The public U.S. pricing page lists the following plan prices. Annual totals below are arithmetic based on the displayed monthly equivalents; they are not a promise of an existing subscriber’s renewal charge.

Plan Displayed price Billing detail
Individual $2.99/month, or $3.99/month $2.99 rate is billed annually; $3.99 rate is billed monthly. The annual-billing equivalent totals $35.88 for 12 months.
Families $4.49/month, or $5.99/month $4.49 rate is billed annually; $5.99 rate is billed monthly. The annual-billing equivalent totals $53.88 for 12 months.
Teams Starter Pack $24.95/month Billed annually; includes 10 members.
Business $8.99 per user/month Billed annually.

1Password says limited-time promotions may apply to new customers during the first year with annual billing. A first-year offer should not be confused with the recurring renewal price; check the renewal terms shown at purchase. Prices can also vary with currency, region, taxes, or how the subscription is billed.

When will your bill change?

For reported U.S. pricing, March 27, 2026 is the start date for affected renewals—not a date on which every account was charged simultaneously. The relevant event is generally your renewal or billing cycle under the new pricing notice. TechRadar also reported different approval rules in Europe and some other locations, so do not assume U.S. timing applies worldwide.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.
  • If your annual renewal was March 1, 2026, it could have been billed at the previous rate because it preceded the reported U.S. effective date.
  • If your annual renewal was April 1, 2026, you would generally expect the new rate to apply, subject to your account and billing terms.
  • If you pay monthly, look for the first monthly billing cycle governed by the notice sent to you; the account-specific notice controls rather than the article publication date.

Subscriptions bought through Apple’s App Store or Google Play may be managed and billed through that store, with its own subscription controls and timing. Promotions, employer-provided memberships, business benefits, taxes, currency conversion, and regional consent requirements can also make a bill differ from the direct-web examples.

How to check whether your account is affected

  1. Sign in at 1Password.com.
  2. Open Billing in the account sidebar.
  3. Check the plan, next renewal date, and displayed renewal amount.
  4. Compare those details with your latest renewal email or invoice. If you pay through an app store, check the subscription in that store as well.

There is no supported basis for assuming that every long-time subscriber is grandfathered—or that every subscriber has the same renewal price. If the displayed amount is unclear or conflicts with your notice, ask 1Password Support to confirm the amount and billing date before making a change.

Why is 1Password raising prices?

In reporting on the increase, 1Password’s stated rationale was that prices had remained largely unchanged for many years and that the company wanted to continue investing in the product and new features. That explains the company’s public position; it does not independently establish the company’s costs, margins, or the precise financial reason for the size of the increase. Whether the added expense is worthwhile depends on the features and workflows you actually use.

What are you paying for?

Individual and Families are not just password lists. 1Password’s product and support pages describe features including password generation, autofill and autosave, use across devices, secure sharing, Watchtower alerts for weak or compromised credentials, and storage for information such as notes, cards, and identities. The service also describes end-to-end encryption.

Families and shared vaults

Families adds shared vaults and family access management. 1Password’s materials describe inviting up to five family members, while support material also describes the plan as including up to five people. Because those descriptions can be read differently, check the plan’s current member limit before relying on a particular total. Families is most valuable when more than one person actively shares and manages credentials; a household that barely uses sharing may not get the same value.

Business plans and employer benefits

Teams Starter Pack and Business are business subscriptions rather than direct substitutes for an Individual or Families account. Business users may also receive a 1Password Families membership for home use, according to 1Password’s membership support page. If your employer provides this benefit, check eligibility before paying separately for a personal family subscription.

Is 1Password still worth the price?

It may be worth keeping for feature-heavy or shared use

  • You rely on shared vaults and straightforward household administration.
  • You use 1Password across several device types and value its apps and browser extensions.
  • You store secure notes, identity details, documents, recovery information, or other sensitive material alongside logins.
  • You prefer a managed product and do not want to configure or maintain a more technical setup.
  • Your business needs administrative controls, identity-provider integrations, audit features, or managed sharing.

The increase may be harder to justify for basic solo use

  • You need only basic password and passkey storage and already have a platform password manager that meets your needs.
  • You are cost-sensitive and make little use of 1Password-specific features.
  • You are comfortable with open-source-oriented software or self-hosting and accept the added management work.
  • Your household does not use shared vaults or other family features enough to offset the subscription.

There is no single best choice for every user. A polished cross-platform workflow and broad secure-data storage can justify the price for some people; for someone with one basic vault, the cost of migration may be easier to accept than another renewal.

Option Price information Best suited to Trade-off to consider
Bitwarden Free plan; Premium $19.80/year; Families $47.88/year for up to six users. Cost-conscious individuals and families, people seeking an open-source-oriented option, and users who want broad cross-platform access. Workflow and family experience may differ from what you prefer in 1Password; verify specialized data and sharing during migration. See personal plans and business pricing.
Proton Pass Current dollar amount not stated in the cited pricing information. People already paying for Proton services, or those who value email aliases and an integrated privacy ecosystem. Check the current plan price and features directly; the cited sources do not establish a comparable current dollar figure. See Proton Pass pricing and Proton Pass Family.
Apple Passwords Included with Apple devices and operating systems rather than sold as a separate password-manager subscription. Apple-only users with straightforward password and passkey needs. Less suitable for mixed-device households, business administration, or people who need a portable third-party vault. See Apple Passwords.

For Bitwarden, the quoted Premium and Families amounts are annual prices; Teams is listed at $4 per user per month billed annually, and Enterprise at $6 per user per month billed annually on its business pricing page. The price comparison does not establish equivalent features, support, or migration outcomes. For Apple Passwords, ecosystem convenience comes with greater dependence on Apple devices. Proton Pass may make more financial sense when its wider bundle replaces services you already pay for, but compare the actual current bundle terms rather than assuming the password manager alone is cheaper.

How to switch without losing access to important data

Do not cancel first and plan to export later. Keep the 1Password account active until the replacement is set up and checked.

  1. Choose the destination manager and review its import options and supported data types.
  2. Export or migrate from 1Password while you can still access the account. Keep any export file protected; it may contain readable sensitive information.
  3. Check that passwords, passkeys, notes, cards, identities, attachments, custom fields, and one-time-password data transferred as expected. Some items may require manual handling, and shared-vault permissions may not carry over.
  4. Test autofill on desktop and mobile, and verify that you can sign in to important accounts with the new setup.
  5. Ask family members to confirm they can access credentials they need, and save emergency or recovery information separately.
  6. Only after these checks, turn off renewal or delete the old account if that is your choice.

Moving between 1Password account types also has consequences beyond price. Its account-type change instructions document the web workflow: sign in, open Billing, choose Switch plan under the desired account type, and follow the migration steps. In-app-purchase subscriptions may require support to change plan type. Moving from Families to Individual can require removing family members and migrating their data; a removed member may have 30 days to migrate. A move from Teams or Business to Families may not be reversible without Support, and deleting an original account during migration can permanently erase its information. Read the migration instructions before starting.
