Threads passed 400 million monthly active users in August 2025, according to Meta executives Mark Zuckerberg and Adam Mosseri. The figure was a measure of monthly reach, not daily use, and it was a company-reported count rather than an independently audited total. Meta subsequently announced that Threads had reached 500 million monthly active users on June 16, 2026, making the 400-million milestone an important historical marker rather than the platform’s latest reported size.
For businesses and creators, the growth makes Threads a potentially useful additional Meta channel. It does not, by itself, show that Threads has overtaken X, that users are highly engaged, or that advertising there will deliver better returns.
What Meta announced in August 2025
On August 12, 2025, Meta leadership said Threads had crossed “more than 400 million” monthly active users. The announcement referred to people active on Threads during a monthly period. It did not mean that 400 million people were using the service every day, and Meta did not publish a detailed methodology for the count in that announcement.
The milestone followed Meta’s report of 350 million monthly active users in April 2025—an increase of about 50 million. The August statement also described the figure as having been reached “as of a few weeks ago,” so it should not be read as a precise measurement taken on August 12 itself. Threads’ reported growth timeline
The sequence below uses milestones reported by Meta or contemporary coverage. The changes are arithmetic based on those reported figures, not independent user audits.

From roughly 175 million around Threads’ first birthday to more than 400 million, the reported monthly audience grew by approximately 2.3 times. From 320 million in late January 2025 to 400 million, it increased by about 80 million. Those calculations describe the reported milestones; they do not establish retention, time spent, or the number of people who use Threads daily.
What “monthly active users” tells you—and what it does not
A monthly active user (MAU) is generally a person counted as active at least once during a defined month. An MAU total can include someone who opens Threads once, someone who reads every day, and everyone in between.
- It measures reach: how many accounts Meta says were active during the period.
- It does not measure frequency: the announcement does not say how often users opened the app or how long they stayed.
- It does not measure contribution: the figure does not reveal how many people posted, replied, followed communities, or merely viewed content.
- It is not automatically unique across Meta: the evidence does not establish that every counted account represents a distinct person who was not counted elsewhere.
That distinction matters for financial and business decisions. A large MAU number can coexist with low daily frequency, heavy reliance on occasional visits, or uneven activity between markets. To judge whether Threads is becoming a durable destination, analysts also need daily activity, retention, time spent, creator output, conversion data, and comparable third-party measurement.

Did Threads catch or surpass X?
That conclusion is not established by the 400-million announcement. Meta supplied a global monthly figure for Threads. X has made its own user claims, including figures around 600 million monthly users, but those claims have not been independently audited in a directly comparable way. Third-party reports have measured different items, such as daily mobile activity, web visits, or app usage.
For example, contemporary comparisons cited higher daily visit totals for X in some periods, while US mobile analyses placed Threads below X on daily-active-user measures. Such results do not disprove Meta’s MAU figure; they answer different questions.
A valid comparison must match the date, geography, device coverage, activity definition, and source methodology. Threads’ 400 million global MAUs cannot be equated with X’s daily visits, US mobile daily users, or web traffic. The defensible conclusion is that Threads was narrowing the gap on selected measures, not that it had become the larger platform overall. A contemporaneous comparison index is available at Techmeme.
Why was Threads gaining momentum?
The timing of product expansion and audience growth points to several plausible contributors, but the available figures do not prove that any single feature caused the 50-million increase between April and August 2025.

Instagram distribution
Threads benefits from Meta’s Instagram ecosystem, including account discovery and an existing pool of creators and followers. That funnel can reduce the friction of finding people to follow, while still leaving open how many Instagram users become regular Threads participants.
A more complete standalone product
During this period Meta added or expanded direct messaging, spoiler tagging, fediverse-related feed features, highlighting tools, creator and account insights, custom feeds, feed controls, and longer-form text attachments. These additions addressed functions expected from a public conversation network rather than a simple X clone.
More native activity
Creators, celebrities, publishers, and communities increasingly posted directly on Threads. Their participation can make a network more useful to readers and newcomers, although the milestone alone cannot quantify how much activity came from any particular group.
Meta’s Threads newsroom archive records the product-development chronology. Availability of individual features can vary by country, account, and app version.

What happened after 400 million?
On June 16, 2026, Meta announced that Threads had reached 500 million monthly active users. Meta associated the milestone with the expansion of Communities and feed controls including “Your Algo,” which lets people influence the topics shown in their feeds. The announcement is at Meta’s newsroom.
The additional 100 million reported users show that the 400-million figure was not presented as a temporary peak. They do not establish that growth will continue at the same pace, nor do they answer whether people are visiting more often or participating more deeply.

Threads’ scale became more commercially relevant when Meta expanded advertising globally in January 2026. Meta said advertisers could manage Threads placements through its existing advertising infrastructure, including campaigns using image, video, carousel, catalog, and app-ad formats, with Business Settings integration and third-party brand-safety verification. Businesses already running Facebook or Instagram campaigns can potentially add Threads placements without adopting a separate buying platform. Meta Ads Manager is available at facebook.com/business/tools/ads-manager. There is no fixed subscription price: advertisers set budgets in Meta’s auction, and costs vary by objective, audience, placement, geography, and competition.

How to evaluate it
- Set a separate budget or placement test so Threads results are visible rather than blended into the whole campaign.
- Measure outcomes such as qualified traffic, leads, purchases, or app actions—not impressions alone.
- Compare Threads with Instagram and Facebook on the same objective, attribution window, geography, and creative.
- Do not infer lower costs or higher conversion rates from the MAU total.
The audience number supports a reach case, especially for advertisers already using Meta’s tools. It is not evidence of a particular return on ad spend, targeting quality, or conversion rate in any market.
How to read the milestone as an investor, creator, or user
- Investors: treat the figures as management-reported scale indicators and look for corroborating engagement, monetization, and retention disclosures.
- Creators and publishers: test whether the audiences and conversations relevant to your niche are active, rather than assuming global MAUs translate into local reach.
- Advertisers: use controlled placement and conversion tests; audience size alone is not a performance forecast.
- Users comparing networks: distinguish broad monthly reach from the platform’s importance for breaking news, politics, journalism, or real-time events in a particular community.
