There is no single best aluminum suitcase for every traveler. Travel + Leisure’s 2026 test named the Rimowa Cabin S best overall, while other cases won category honors for durability, features, compact size, value, design, trunk capacity, organization and compression. Your decision should start with the trip format, the case’s empty weight and exterior dimensions, then its interior layout, service terms and price.
How the 2026 test was conducted—and what it proves
Travel + Leisure tested 18 pieces of aluminum luggage in an editorial comparison updated September 14, 2026. A senior testing editor assessed capacity, organization, design, durability, maneuverability and value. For carry-ons, testers built a replica airplane set to evaluate overhead-bin fit, lifting feel and handle placement. They hit larger cases with baseball bats to compare scratching and denting, and struck unlocked latches to assess security. Every case was then sent for long-term testing; the publication says the team plans to travel with them for six months and update the findings.
Those impacts are comparative editorial tests, not an airline-handling certification or a prediction that a particular shell will avoid damage. The six-month follow-up is still ongoing, so the current awards reflect the completed testing stages rather than finished long-term results. Choose the suitcase format before the brand
Carry-on cases
A compact carry-on lowers the chance of a gate-size problem and avoids checked-bag handling, but aluminum’s extra shell weight matters when you lift it into an overhead bin. Airlines enforce dimensions differently, and a manufacturer’s “most major airlines” wording is not a guarantee for every carrier or aircraft. Check the operating airline’s current size and weight limits, including the wheels and handles.

Checked suitcases
A larger checked case gives you more room for longer trips but is heavier to move when full and more exposed to impacts. Compare the empty weight and outside dimensions before focusing on liters; a high-capacity case that exceeds a carrier’s size or weight allowance can cost more in fees.
Trunks
Trunks prioritize vertical or deep capacity and can suit extended travel or bulky gear. They are less convenient when you need to lift a large, heavy box into a car, train luggage rack or hotel stairway. Confirm that the trunk’s dimensions fit your planned transport and any checked-bag limits.

The Away Bigger Carry-On adds 6 liters over the standard Carry-On, while also adding 1.2 inches of width, 0.6 inch of depth, 0.1 pound of empty weight and a taller exterior. Do not treat either model’s “most major airlines” statement as universal approval.

Interior design can matter more than the metal shell
Two aluminum cases with similar dimensions can pack very differently. Compression panels help restrain clothing; dividers separate sides of the case; pockets make passports, chargers or shoes easier to find; and a laundry compartment keeps worn items apart. Away lists all of those practical elements on its Carry-On Aluminum Edition page, including a clip-in pocket panel and hidden laundry bag. Rimowa’s Check-In L uses a Compression Flex Divider System. Match the system to your packing habits instead of assuming a heavier shell automatically provides better organization.
Durability, scratches and maneuverability
Aluminum can show dents and scratches as part of normal travel. The tested guide specifically compared cosmetic damage after bat impacts and examined latches, while also rating how cases moved and how handles felt. A case that acquires a mark can remain structurally and functionally usable; cosmetic wear and mechanical failure are different outcomes. Wheels, telescopic handles, locks and hinges deserve as much attention as the shell when you assess long-term value.

Away
Away’s current warranty language distinguishes purchases made on or after April 14, 2026 from earlier purchases. For the current coverage described on its site, LifetimeCare provides complimentary repairs for the first five years and may offer a replacement when covered damage cannot be repaired; repair support continues after year five.
