One published estimate puts it between $400 million and $1 billion, but that range is speculative: the largest apparent source of his wealth is equity in private company Automattic, and neither his ownership percentage nor the company’s current value is public. Automattic’s last widely reported valuation was $7.5 billion in 2021.
What is Matt Mullenweg’s estimated net worth?
A published estimate from SpreadThoughts places Mullenweg’s net worth at roughly $400 million to $1 billion. Treat that as a third-party estimate, not a verified balance sheet or audited figure. Its central uncertainty is the value of Mullenweg’s private-company equity: public information does not establish his exact economic stake in Automattic.
Net worth is the value of a person’s assets minus liabilities. A founder’s estimated ownership in a private company is only one input. Without information about the stake, other assets, debt, taxes, and the price at which shares could actually be sold, a precise personal figure cannot be calculated from public evidence.
How much is Automattic worth?
Automattic’s last widely reported valuation was $7.5 billion, based on financing and share-buyback activity in 2021, according to its Forbes company profile. That is a historical private-company valuation, not a current 2026 market price. A financing valuation may apply to a particular share class and does not necessarily mean every share could be sold at the same price.

That adjustment does not establish the company’s total valuation or the value of Mullenweg’s stake; it is one investor’s reported mark, not a new company-wide transaction.
How did Matt Mullenweg build his wealth?
WordPress and Automattic
Mullenweg co-created WordPress, the open-source publishing software, and founded Automattic in 2005. Automattic’s official biography identifies him as the company’s founder and CEO and says he has served as CEO since 2014. His principal apparent wealth source is his position and equity in Automattic, rather than ownership of every WordPress-related asset.
Automattic operates a portfolio that includes WordPress.com, WooCommerce, Tumblr, Jetpack, Simplenote, Longreads, Day One, Pocket Casts, Newspack, Beeper, Akismet, Gravatar, WPScan, Crowdsignal, and WordPress VIP, as described on its company overview. These are associated with Automattic; their existence does not mean Mullenweg personally owns each product as a separate asset.
Audrey Capital and other investments
Automattic’s biography also says Mullenweg runs Audrey Capital, an investment and research company. The public material cited here does not establish the value of its holdings or provide a separate amount to add to his net worth, so it cannot support a more precise estimate.
Rank #3
What percentage of Automattic does he own?
No reliable public source cited here discloses Mullenweg’s exact economic ownership percentage. Founder status, influence over company decisions, voting control, and the financial value of a personal shareholding are different things; evidence of one does not establish the others.
Automattic announced in October 2024 that employees received 200 A12 shares and could participate in an internal share marketplace. The announcement confirms that equity extends beyond the founder, but does not disclose a complete cap table or Mullenweg’s stake. Employee equity and other financing can affect ownership percentages over time.

The table shows hypothetical gross equity values if Automattic were valued at $7.5 billion and Mullenweg held the assumed percentage. The percentages are scenarios, not claims about his actual ownership.
| Assumed stake | Implied gross value at $7.5 billion |
|---|---|
| 5% | $375 million |
| 10% | $750 million |
| 15% | $1.125 billion |
| 20% | $1.5 billion |
| 25% | $1.875 billion |
The calculation is company valuation multiplied by assumed ownership. For example, a hypothetical 10% stake at that historical valuation would imply $750 million in gross paper equity. It would not establish personal net worth or cash available to spend. The calculation excludes taxes, debt, other assets and liabilities, share-class differences, sale restrictions, illiquidity discounts, subsequent valuation changes, and dilution.

Is Matt Mullenweg a billionaire?
Public evidence does not establish that Mullenweg’s personal net worth exceeds $1 billion. Some assumed Automattic stakes would imply more than $1 billion in gross equity at the company’s 2021 valuation, but the actual stake and its current realizable value are unknown. It is therefore not possible to confirm billionaire status from the figures available.
Does Mullenweg personally own WordPress?
“WordPress” can refer to different things. WordPress.org is the open-source software and community infrastructure; WordPress.com is Automattic’s hosted commercial service. Automattic is a private, for-profit company, while the WordPress Foundation is a separate nonprofit associated with the trademark and project stewardship. Automattic’s press information describes WordPress as open-source software and distinguishes it from WordPress.com.
Accordingly, it would be misleading to treat all WordPress-related software, community infrastructure, and trademarks as one company asset personally owned by Mullenweg. The wealth estimate is principally linked to his Automattic equity and other personal assets, whose full values are not publicly established.
