There is no single cheapest internet provider for every U.S. household. In 2026, the lowest usable bill depends on your address, eligibility, network technology, equipment charges and whether you need fixed home broadband or can manage with a hotspot. The prices below were checked against provider or government materials available in August 2026; enter your exact address and recheck the checkout total before enrolling.

The Affordable Connectivity Program (ACP) ended after its funding was exhausted in 2024, so it is not an available 2026 discount. See the Congressional Research Service explanation before trusting older “$30 ACP credit” articles.

Quick comparison of 12 low-cost providers

Prices are recurring price signals, not guarantees that a plan is available nationwide. “Not stated” means the cited material did not establish a comparable figure; confirm it with the provider.

  • Broad low-income cable option: Xfinity Internet Essentials, where Xfinity serves the address.
  • Potential low-income fiber: Verizon Forward or AT&T Access when the address qualifies for Fios or AT&T fiber.
  • Regional bargain: Astound Internet First or Mediacom Connect2Compete, subject to local checkout pricing.
  • No income qualification stated: Visible Home Internet, if Verizon wireless capacity supports the address.
  • Hotspot alternative: PCs for People or Human-I-T for light use, temporary housing or backup service.
  • Additional discount: Lifeline, if a participating provider in your state accepts it.

NETGEAR Nighthawk Modem Router Combo (CAX30) DOCSIS 3.1 Cable Modem and WiFi 6 Router - AX2700 2.7 Gbps - Compatible with Xfinity, Spectrum, Cox, and More - Gigabit Wireless Internet
  • MAXIMIZE YOUR CABLE INTERNET AND WHOLE-HOME WIFI: A cable modem and WiFi router in one device unlocks the full potential of your home internet with faster downloads, smoother WiFi for gaming and video calls, and reliable coverage in every room.
  • APPROVED FOR YOUR PROVIDER AND PLAN: Works with Xfinity internet plans up to 800Mbps, Spectrum up to 1Gbps, and Cox up to 1Gbps. Not compatible with Verizon, AT&T, CenturyLink, DirecTV, DISH, or bundled voice plans. ISP activation required after setup.
  • MULTI-GIG DOCSIS 3.1 SPEEDS: Get Gigabit+ cable download speeds on today's fastest plans, with headroom for the upgrades ahead. Real-world speeds depend on your plan and ISP network.
  • WIFI 6 COVERAGE FOR THE WHOLE HOME: Stay connected in every room with dual-band AX2700 WiFi 6 covering up to 2,000 sq ft and capacity for 25+ connected devices. Real-world coverage depends on home size, layout, and building materials.
  • WIRED CONNECTIONS FOR YOUR FASTEST DEVICES: Four Gigabit Ethernet ports keep gaming consoles, desktops, and streaming devices hardwired for the lowest latency and the most stable connection in your home.

This is a strong choice for eligible households in Xfinity territory that need conventional home broadband. Confirm the gateway, Wi-Fi, installation, data and cancellation terms at checkout; a low advertised service price is not automatically your all-in bill.

Cox Connect2Compete

Cox lists Connect2Compete at $9.95 per month for qualifying households with at least one child in grades K–12 and participation in an eligible assistance program. Both conditions matter; receiving SNAP or another benefit alone does not establish eligibility. Check the current rules at Cox’s Connect2Compete and ConnectAssist FAQ.

Choose it when Cox cable is available and the household can document the child and qualifying program. Families that do not meet those requirements should examine ConnectAssist or another provider instead.

Mediacom Connect2Compete

Government comparative material has listed Mediacom Connect2Compete at approximately $10 per month. The figure is a price signal from earlier program information, not a universal August 2026 quote. Eligibility commonly involves assistance participation and school-age children, and Mediacom’s footprint is regional.

Check the exact address, current eligibility and equipment charges before relying on this as a rural bargain. A local cable plan can be more practical than a much faster plan unavailable at the home.

Astound Broadband Internet First

The Congressional Research Service comparative material lists Internet First at approximately $20 per month, while local or historical listings may differ. Astound serves selected markets, and eligibility and speeds vary by location.

  • TWO-IN-ONE DOCSIS 3.0 MODEM ROUTER: Combines your modem and router into one device. Simply connect to your coaxial cable outlet to set up. Not compatible with fiber, DSL, satellite, or bundled voice services from cable providers. For US cable internet only.
  • AC1900 WIFI 5 SPEED FOR STREAMING, GAMING, AND YOUR WHOLE HOME: Up to 1.9Gbps combined across 2.4GHz and 5GHz bands for fast, reliable speeds even during peak hours. Beamforming+ boosts range and reduces dead spots to keep every device connected throughout your home. Real-world speeds depend on your connected devices and internet plan.
  • CERTIFIED WITH XFINITY AND COX FOR FAST, RELIABLE CABLE INTERNET: Works with Xfinity internet plans up to 800Mbps and Cox plans up to 500Mbps. Not compatible with Verizon, AT&T, CenturyLink, DirecTV, DISH, or bundled voice plans. ISP activation required after setup.
  • WIRED AND WIRELESS CONNECTIONS FOR EVERY DEVICE IN YOUR HOME: Four Gigabit Ethernet LAN ports deliver fast, reliable wired connections for computers, gaming consoles, streaming players, and storage drives. One USB 2.0 port for additional device connectivity.
  • SET UP AND MANAGE YOUR NETWORK WITH THE FREE NIGHTHAWK APP: Download the Nighthawk app on iOS or Android to get connected quickly, run speed tests, pause the internet on any device, manage connected devices, and control your network from anywhere. Browser-based setup also available.

Use the provider’s current availability and affordability application rather than assuming the reference price or advertised speed applies to your address. Compare upload speed and Wi-Fi charges with Xfinity, Cox or Spectrum where networks overlap.

Verizon Forward

Verizon says Verizon Forward can provide up to a $30 monthly discount to eligible home-internet customers. Current eligibility references include Lifeline, SNAP, WIC, a recently received Pell Grant and other specified criteria. Verizon has also described qualifying configurations beginning around $20 per month, but service type, location, timing and—in some cases—a Verizon mobile relationship affect the result.

Review Verizon’s LTE Home Internet FAQ, home-internet FAQ and the MyHome announcement. Fixed wireless performance depends on signal, network capacity and gateway placement; Fios generally offers stronger upload performance where it is available.

Spectrum Internet Assist

Spectrum identifies Internet Assist as an eligibility-based program for households using programs such as NSLP, CEP or SSI. Recent official and government references put the service price around $25 per month, but Spectrum says current plan and optional services should be confirmed at checkout.

In-home Wi-Fi can be an optional add-on, so do not treat the service price as a complete Wi-Fi bill without checking Spectrum Internet Assist and its program explanation. Spectrum’s cable uploads may be substantially lower than fiber uploads.

AT&T Access

AT&T Access is an active low-cost program for verified eligible households. Comparative government material has placed it around $30 per month, but the exact price, speed and underlying technology are address-specific.

  • FAST Wi Fi PERFORMANCE: Get up to 1800 sq ft wireless coverage and 30 devices connected
  • VERSATILE CONNECTIONS: 4 Gigabit Ethernet ports give you fast wired connections to your computer,, game box, and other devices. One USB port for storage devices.

It can be especially valuable where the address qualifies for AT&T fiber, but do not assume fiber is offered simply because AT&T serves the surrounding area. Confirm eligibility, gateway terms, installation and the actual upload speed.

Cox ConnectAssist

Cox lists ConnectAssist at $30 per month for eligible individuals or households. Its criteria differ from Connect2Compete, so a household that lacks a K–12 child may still qualify, while another household may not. Use the Cox FAQ for current requirements and address verification.

Visible Home Internet

Visible launched Home Internet in 2026 at $30 per month with taxes and fees included; a reported annual option is $300. Launch promotions, including introductory gateway terms, should not be confused with the recurring price. See the Visible Home Internet announcement.

No income qualification was stated in the launch material, but address eligibility and Verizon network capacity still control access. Fixed wireless can be easy to install, yet speeds, latency and congestion vary more than a wired connection. It is a poor fit for households needing consistently strong uploads or low latency.

PCs for People

PCs for People combines low-cost mobile hotspot service with discounted devices. A recent public-sector listing showed $15 per month plus a $60 one-time fee; verify current pricing, eligibility, data allowance and device terms at PCs for People.

This is best for one person, temporary housing, backup connectivity or a home with light simultaneous use. Hotspot plans may impose device limits, high-speed allowances, video restrictions or network deprioritization, making them unsuitable for a busy family.

  • DUAL-BAND WIFI 6 ROUTER: Wi-Fi 6(802.11ax) technology achieves faster speeds, greater capacity and reduced network congestion compared to the previous gen. All WiFi routers require a separate modem. Dual-Band WiFi routers do not support the 6 GHz band.
  • AX1800: Enjoy smoother and more stable streaming, gaming, downloading with 1.8 Gbps total bandwidth (up to 1200 Mbps on 5 GHz and up to 574 Mbps on 2.4 GHz). Performance varies by conditions, distance to devices, and obstacles such as walls.
  • CONNECT MORE DEVICES: Wi-Fi 6 technology communicates more data to more devices simultaneously using revolutionary OFDMA technology
  • EXTENSIVE COVERAGE: Achieve the strong, reliable WiFi coverage with Archer AX1800 as it focuses signal strength to your devices far away using Beamforming technology, 4 high-gain antennas and an advanced front-end module (FEM) chipset
  • OUR CYBERSECURITY COMMITMENT: TP-Link is a signatory of the U.S. Cybersecurity and Infrastructure Security Agency’s (CISA) Secure-by-Design pledge. This device is designed, built, and maintained, with advanced security as a core requirement.

Human-I-T

Human-I-T offers low-cost hotspot connectivity and refurbished devices for qualifying groups, including low-income households, seniors and veterans. Prices vary by program. Ask specifically about monthly high-speed data, hotspot hardware, shipping, renewal and support before comparing it with a wired ISP.

Lifeline-supported service

Lifeline is separate from the discontinued ACP. The federal benefit is generally up to $9.25 per month, or up to $34.25 on qualifying Tribal lands, applied through a participating broadband or mobile provider. It is generally limited to one benefit per household, and state and provider participation matter. Start at Lifeline Support and review Verizon’s state-specific information at Verizon Lifeline.

How to find the cheapest usable plan at your address

  1. Map the address. Enter the exact street address, apartment and unit in the FCC National Broadband Map. Treat the result as a discovery tool, not approval for a discounted plan.
  2. Check ordinary availability. Use each provider’s address checker to confirm that the network and the low-cost tier are sold at the specific building.
  3. Apply through the affordability page. Provider eligibility pages are often separate from ordinary sales pages. Prepare benefit letters, school-program records, income documents or Pell Grant information as required.
  4. Calculate first-year cost. Add 12 months of service, gateway or Wi-Fi charges, installation, activation, deposits, taxes, one-time fees and any annual prepayment. Separate a recurring price from a temporary promotion.
  5. Check performance. Compare both download and upload speeds, latency and the number of people using the connection at once.
  6. Read data and network rules. Confirm caps, congestion management, hotspot restrictions, gaming or VPN limits and whether “unlimited” means unlimited priority.
  7. Verify conditions. Ask whether AutoPay, a bank account, mobile bundling, a new-customer status or a contract is required, and what happens if eligibility expires.
  8. Save proof. Keep the application confirmation, eligibility documents, quoted price and equipment-return instructions.

How much speed is enough?

  • One person browsing and occasional streaming: roughly 25–75 Mbps may be adequate.
  • Two or three people with HD streaming, schoolwork and video calls: roughly 75–150 Mbps is more comfortable.
  • Several simultaneous users, remote work, gaming or 4K streaming: 200 Mbps or more may be useful.
  • Large households or heavy cloud uploads: prioritize fiber or a cable tier with stronger upload performance rather than buying the highest download number.

These are planning ranges, not provider guarantees. A 75 Mbps wired plan with stable latency can feel better than a nominally faster congested wireless plan.

Common traps that make “cheap” internet expensive

  • Wi-Fi add-ons: Spectrum’s Internet Assist material, for example, presents advanced Wi-Fi as optional.
  • Expired ACP claims: The ACP is not an enrollment route in 2026.
  • Teaser prices: A new-customer rate, annual prepayment or mobile bundle may not be the standalone recurring price.
  • Unusable hotspots: Device limits, high-speed allowances, deprioritization and video restrictions can undermine a low monthly charge.
  • Eligibility assumptions: SNAP, Medicaid or SSI may qualify you for one provider but not another; documentation and renewal rules differ.
  • Rural availability: Consider electric-cooperative fiber, local fixed wireless, municipal networks, libraries and community Wi-Fi before defaulting to expensive satellite service.

When local or nonprofit options beat national providers

National rankings cannot capture every cooperative, municipal network or local subsidy. Rural households should ask an electric cooperative about fiber, check county or city broadband programs, and use the FCC map to identify smaller fixed-wireless providers. Libraries and community centers may provide short-term Wi-Fi, while Human-I-T and PCs for People can pair connectivity with refurbished equipment.

The Bottom Line

The cheapest usable internet in 2026 is the plan that is actually available at your address, that you qualify for, and whose equipment, Wi-Fi, taxes and data rules fit your household. Check the address first, compare the first-year all-in cost, and apply through the provider or official Lifeline page—not an expired ACP link.
