The realistic route is to enter your exact U.S. address in Walmart, Instacart, Shipt and Uber’s marketplace, search for the specific item, and choose the fastest arrival time actually offered at checkout. Inventory, store distance, hours, shopper availability, traffic, basket size and local rules determine whether that promise appears.
The five-minute way to find a one-hour delivery
- Enter the complete delivery address, including apartment, hotel, office, unit, gate and access details.
- Search the exact brand, size, model or product number instead of browsing generally.
- Filter or select the option labeled “one hour,” “Express,” “as fast as one hour,” “30 minutes or less” or “available now.”
- Confirm the selected store and the displayed arrival estimate before building a large basket.
- Compare the complete checkout total—including fees, taxes and tip—with another service.
- Choose substitutions, add delivery instructions, place the order and keep your phone available for shopper messages.
A displayed estimate is more useful than a national advertising claim. “Same day” can mean several hours later; it is not the same as delivery within 60 minutes. “As fast as one hour” is a best-case estimate, while a one-hour window allows arrival at any point in that period. Express is usually a paid accelerated option. Pickup preparation within an hour means the order is ready for you to collect, not delivered.

Walmart
Walmart advertises Express delivery in one hour or less and, in selected markets, delivery in 30 minutes or less. Its 2026 rollout names groceries, pharmacy products, household supplies, pet products, electronics and other general merchandise. The option appears only when your address, store inventory and local capacity qualify. Walmart says its fast-delivery system considers basket size, driver availability and distance. A $10 fee was announced for the 30-minute-or-less service for Walmart+ members in markets where that option is offered; do not apply that charge to every Express order.
Instacart
Instacart lets you select among participating local groceries, warehouse clubs, pharmacies, pet retailers, convenience stores, restaurants, hardware and beauty stores. It advertises same-day delivery as fast as one hour, with timing and assortment controlled by your address and chosen retailer. It announced one-hour Ace Hardware delivery for tools, lawn and garden items, grilling supplies and maintenance products (Ace announcement), plus one-hour or same-day partnerships involving Lush (Lush announcement) and Ulta (Ulta announcement).

Shipt
Shipt says it delivers from more than 120 stores in more than 5,000 U.S. cities, including groceries, household essentials, pet supplies, alcohol where available and electronics. That coverage does not guarantee a one-hour slot for your store. Shipt’s app and website let you choose a store, items, payment method and delivery time.
Uber marketplace and Uber One
Uber’s marketplace covers restaurants, groceries, convenience products and participating retailers. Uber One can reduce delivery fees on eligible orders, but it is not a one-hour guarantee; the storefront’s ETA and eligibility control. It is often the quickest place to check for prepared food, convenience items and local on-demand orders.
How to place the order correctly
- Set the destination first. Use the address where someone can receive the order. Add building, room or unit information, parking instructions, gate codes and a working phone number.
- Find the exact product. Check brand, size, flavor, model, quantity and prescription or product strength. Select the nearby store shown by the service.
- Verify the fast slot. The ETA can change after the full address, store and basket are entered. Do not assume a “same-day” badge means one hour.
- Set substitution rules. Choose any replacement, same brand or size only, contact me first, or refund if unavailable. Use refund for medication, infant formula, allergy-sensitive food, a specific electronics accessory, printer ink, a pet-food formula or an exact hardware part unless a replacement is genuinely acceptable.
- Review the total. Look for item-price differences, delivery and service fees, small-order or cart fees, express or rush charges, taxes, alcohol charges and tip.
- Track and respond. Approve or reject replacements promptly. Instacart supports shopper messaging, replacement preferences, instructions and tracking; Shipt provides comparable order and time-selection controls.
- Receive safely. Meet the driver, use a staffed reception area or choose a secure drop-off for temperature-sensitive or theft-prone items.
How to improve the odds of arriving within an hour
- Choose the nearest eligible store and order during its operating hours.
- Keep the urgent basket small. Large baskets, many weighted produce items, deli orders, custom cakes and long-preparation foods take longer to shop.
- Choose substitutes in advance and answer shopper messages immediately.
- Do not combine distant retailers unless the service clearly supports that timing.
- Place the order before predictable peaks such as meal times, holidays, sporting events or store closing.
- Use pickup when driving or walking to the store is faster than waiting for a driver.
- Expect slower service during rain, snow, emergencies and other demand surges; if the item is essential, order before the advertised maximum.
What one-hour delivery really costs

Total cost = item prices + delivery fee + service fee + small-order or cart fee + express/rush fee + taxes + tip + the portion of any membership fee attributable to the order.
Marketplace item prices may be higher than the store’s in-person prices. A membership can waive a delivery fee while leaving service fees, markups, taxes, minimums and tips in place. A one-off urgent order may cost less than a subscription even when its delivery fee is higher.

When the one-hour option disappears
An express slot can vanish because inventory changed, the nearby store stopped accepting orders, no shopper or driver is available, the basket is too large, the store is closing, your address is outside the rapid zone or the service temporarily throttled demand.
- Remove nonessential items and refresh the ETA.
- Switch to another nearby store or service.
- Allow only acceptable substitutions.
- Choose pickup if it is available sooner.
- Call the store to ask about its own delivery desk or courier.
- Use an independent courier, errand runner or a nearby person as a final fallback.
Marketplace inventory can lag behind shelf inventory, so “in stock” is not a guarantee. Inspect the order immediately and report missing, damaged or incorrect items through the service’s refund process.
Special cases that need extra planning
Prescriptions and medicine
Prescription fulfillment may require pharmacy processing, insurance checks, controlled-substance rules, identity verification or a signature. Call the pharmacy to confirm that the prescription is ready and ask whether an immediate courier option exists. Do not treat prescription delivery like ordering snacks.

Alcohol and age-restricted products
Availability depends on state and local law, retailer hours and platform rules. The recipient may need valid identification. Shipt lists an additional $7 alcohol fee where alcohol delivery is available (Shipt pricing).
Large, heavy or temperature-sensitive goods
Water cases, bulk litter, furniture, appliances and garden materials may require a different vehicle or time window. Frozen and refrigerated products should not sit outside; arrange a staffed drop-off or meet the driver.
Apartments, hotels and offices
Provide the building name, unit or room, lobby and parking directions, access code and whether unattended drop-off is permitted. Confirm that a hotel front desk accepts deliveries and can receive the order promptly.

Rural addresses
One-hour delivery is less common where stores and shopper networks are spread out. Check the local grocery, pharmacy, hardware store, restaurant or an independent courier; pickup may be the fastest realistic option.
Bottom line: choose the address-level offer
The best service is whichever shows your exact item in stock, gives a credible arrival time and produces the lowest acceptable final total at your address. Start with Walmart for a mixed basket, Instacart for broad local-store choice, Shipt for recurring store delivery and Uber for restaurants, convenience purchases and on-demand local orders—but always verify the ETA, fees, substitutions and receiving conditions before paying.
