Short answer: Marg ERP 9+ is usually the better starting point for pharmacy, retail, wholesale, distribution and other stock-heavy businesses. Tally is generally the stronger fit when accounting, financial reporting, payroll, manufacturing, CA familiarity and customization are the priorities. However, Tally ERP 9 is now legacy software: Tally says new ERP 9 licenses are no longer sold and that future enhancements apply to TallyPrime. A new buyer should therefore compare Marg ERP 9+ with TallyPrime, while an existing ERP 9 user should first evaluate an upgrade.
What is actually being compared?
Marg ERP 9+ is the current Marg product family represented in Marg’s product and pricing material. Tally.ERP 9 is an older Tally product line. TallyPrime is its current successor.
Tally says ERP 9 is no longer under active development, new licenses are not sold, and existing users may continue using it. Future enhancements are directed to TallyPrime. See Tally’s licensing FAQ and TallyPrime FAQ. That makes “Marg ERP 9+ vs Tally ERP 9” partly a current-product versus legacy-product comparison.
Quick decision by business type
| Business situation | Better starting point | Reason |
|---|---|---|
| Pharmacy or chemist | Marg ERP 9+ | Investigate its batch, expiry, barcode, retail and distribution workflows first. |
| FMCG distributor or wholesaler | Marg ERP 9+ | More natural fit where stock movement, schemes, salesmen, godowns and distribution dominate. |
| Small retailer | Marg ERP 9+ or TallyPrime | Marg may suit counter billing; TallyPrime may suit an accounting-led operation with accountant familiarity. |
| CA-managed or accounting-first business | TallyPrime | Established accounting model, reporting and accountant ecosystem. |
| Manufacturing | TallyPrime or Marg after validation | Compare BOM, production, job work, costing, batches and shop-floor requirements in a live demo. |
| Payroll-heavy business | TallyPrime, subject to statutory requirements | Tally’s documented ERP feature set includes employee records, payslips, payroll reports and PF/ESI calculations. |
| Existing Tally ERP 9 user | Usually TallyPrime first | Tally documents an upgrade path and migration of existing company data. |
| New buyer in 2026 | Marg ERP 9+ vs TallyPrime | Do not treat ERP 9 as a normal new-purchase option. |
Feature comparison
| Area | Marg ERP 9+ | Tally ERP 9 / TallyPrime consideration |
|---|---|---|
| Core accounting | Accounting is presented alongside billing and inventory; validate report depth for your accountant. | ERP 9 documentation covers ledgers, double-entry bookkeeping, bill-wise receivables and payables, cost centres, bank reconciliation, balance sheet and profit-and-loss reporting. TallyPrime is the current product. |
| GST and statutory work | Marg advertises GST billing, filing support, e-invoicing and e-way-bill capabilities; confirm edition, release and filing workflow. | ERP 9 documentation lists GST, TDS/TCS and other taxation, but an old installation may not reflect current tax requirements. |
| Inventory and billing | Strong candidate for barcode billing, retail POS, batches, expiry, schemes, price levels, credit limits, stock transfers and multi-location operations; verify the exact edition. | ERP 9 documentation covers stock groups, units, godowns, orders, batches, bills of material and manufacturing journals. |
| Manufacturing | Available capabilities and modules must be confirmed for the required production workflow. | Documented ERP 9 coverage includes manufacturing and job work; validate the equivalent current TallyPrime workflow. |
| Payroll | Confirm the payroll module and statutory scope for your edition. | ERP 9 documentation includes employee profiles, salary, payslips, reports and PF/ESI calculations. |
| Users and companies | Gold is listed with unlimited users and unlimited extra companies; lower editions have material limits. | License, user and service terms differ between legacy ERP 9 and TallyPrime; obtain a current India quote. |
| Remote access | Do not assume a LAN license is browser-based cloud software; verify hosting, synchronization and internet dependence. | Confirm whether the proposed TallyPrime deployment is local, hosted or otherwise remote; product capability is not the same as SaaS. |
| Migration | Require a written scope for imports, mappings and historical data. | Tally documents ERP 9-to-TallyPrime migration, but converted data cannot be loaded back into ERP 9. |
Tally’s documented ERP 9 scope is available at Tally ERP 9 help. Marg’s current positioning is described at Marg, Marg product information and Marg Compusoft.

#1 Best Overall
Where Marg ERP 9+ fits best
Inventory-led operations
Marg is the stronger candidate when daily work revolves around fast billing, barcode scanning, batches, expiry dates, schemes, stock transfers, multiple godowns and distributor sales. Marg’s official positioning specifically targets retail, manufacturing, distribution, GST billing, barcode management and inventory management.
Edition limits matter
Marg’s page displayed these base prices on August 18, 2026, before 18% GST:
Rank #2
| Edition | Displayed base price | Displayed limits or description |
|---|---|---|
| Nano | ₹5,550 | 450 bills per month and ₹1,50,000 monthly billing limit. |

Where Tally fits best
Accounting-first organizations
Tally is often the better fit when the accountant or CA needs familiar ledgers, bill-wise control, cost centres, bank reconciliation, financial statements, audit review, data exchange and customizable reporting. Its documented ERP 9 feature set also includes inventory, taxation, payroll, manufacturing, security and synchronization.
Rank #3
Legacy status changes the buying decision
Tally says new ERP 9 licenses are discontinued and feature updates have stopped. Existing users may continue using ERP 9, but a new business should request a TallyPrime India quote rather than buy an unofficial or unsupported ERP 9 copy. Historical reseller prices, such as ₹18,000 Silver and ₹54,000 Gold, are not current official ERP 9 purchase prices.
GST, e-invoicing and compliance: what to verify
“GST support” does not guarantee a correct return. Whichever product you choose, verify:
Rank #4
- GST calculation and invoice formats
- GSTR preparation, export or filing workflow
- E-invoice and e-way-bill generation
- HSN/SAC, registration and tax-rate validation
- Reconciliation and error correction
- Whether the feature is included in the exact edition and current release
Marg advertises GST, e-invoicing and e-way-bill functions at margerp.in. Tally’s ERP 9 documentation lists Indian GST and other taxes, but legacy software should not be assumed to satisfy current statutory changes automatically.

Best Value
- Create a GST retail invoice using a barcode scanner.
- Receive stock by batch and expiry and print the required labels.
- Apply a distributor scheme, customer price level and credit limit.
- Transfer stock between godowns and check valuation.
- Correct a wrong GST invoice without corrupting the audit trail.
- Reconcile a bank transaction and produce a trial balance, outstanding report and profit-and-loss statement.
- Run payroll if required, including statutory deductions.
- Restrict a cashier’s permissions and review the audit trail.
- Back up, restore and verify a company.
- Export the reports your CA actually uses.
Migration and switching
ERP 9 to TallyPrime
Tally’s documented route is to install TallyPrime, choose Reactivate Existing License, enter the Tally.NET ID and password, select the ERP 9 license and then select the company. The upgrade path described by Tally requires an active TSS. See Tally’s upgrade instructions.
- Make a complete backup and preserve an untouched ERP 9 copy.
- Test GST reports, customizations, integrations, opening balances and historical reports.
- Remember that data converted to TallyPrime cannot be loaded back into ERP 9; see TallyPrime’s FAQ.
Tally to Marg or Marg to Tally
Do not assume one-click migration. Obtain a written mapping for ledgers, groups, units, tax categories, stock items, batches, serials, expiries, godowns, barcodes and custom reports. Reconcile trial balance, opening balances and stock valuation, then run both systems for at least one reporting cycle before cutover.
Total cost of ownership
Compare equivalent scope, not just the entry license. Put these lines in the quote:
- License or subscription and annual ARC/TSS
- Users, companies, branches and godowns
- Implementation, migration and training
- Barcode, printer, scanner, weighing-scale and POS hardware
- Custom reports, integrations and add-ons
- Remote access, hosting, backup and disaster recovery
- Support response times, onsite charges and upgrade coverage
Ask whether support is direct or dealer-led, what happens if the dealer changes, and whether GST or e-invoice updates are included.

Consider TallyPrime for a current Tally deployment, Zoho Books for a browser-first cloud model, BUSY for another Indian accounting and inventory option, or a pharmacy/POS-specific system for highly specialized counter workflows. Validate each product’s inventory, offline, payroll, GST, multi-branch and migration capabilities before deciding.
Quick Recap
A practical decision rule
- Choose Marg first when pharmacy, retail, barcode, batch/expiry, schemes or distribution stock control drives the business.
- Choose TallyPrime first when accounting, CA familiarity, payroll, manufacturing, reporting or existing Tally data drives the decision.
- Upgrade ERP 9 before replacing it when the company has complex historical Tally data and customizations.
- Request both demonstrations when manufacturing, multi-branch operations or migration complexity makes the fit uncertain.
