How to Transfer a Stripe Account to a Different Entity After a Business Sale or Acquisition

A Stripe account handoff depends on whether the same legal entity continues and whether the buyer is in the same country. Contact Stripe before changing business or payout details, and plan a migration if a new account is required.

You cannot transfer a Stripe account to a buyer simply by changing its login email, business name, or payout bank account. Contact Stripe Support before changing legal or payout details. If the same legal entity continues, Stripe may allow you to update its account information and transfer Dashboard ownership. If the buyer is a different entity in the same country, Stripe must confirm whether the existing account can be updated or a new one is needed. If the buyer’s entity is in another country, Stripe says to create a new account there and ask Support about transferring eligible data.

First identify what changed in the sale

The transaction documents and applicable corporate law determine whether the legal entity registered with Stripe still exists. The label “acquisition” alone does not answer that question. The entity entitled to receive future customer payments should match the business verified on the Stripe account.

  • Equity or stock sale: The corporation or other entity may remain the same, even though its shareholders, directors, representative, beneficial owners, administrators, or bank account change. If the legal entity is unchanged, the work may principally involve updating authorized people and business details.
  • Asset sale: The buyer may operate through a different corporation, LLC, partnership, or sole proprietorship. Do not assume the seller’s verified account can simply be renamed for the buyer. Ask Stripe whether it will approve changes to the existing account or require a new one.
  • Merger or statutory conversion: The surviving entity and its registration records matter. Ask Stripe what evidence it needs to establish continuity or approve a change.
  • Purchase by a parent company: A parent’s ownership of a subsidiary does not, by itself, make the parent and subsidiary the same legal entity. Confirm which entity will be merchant of record and receive the payments.
  • Acquisition by an entity in another country: Stripe says an existing account’s country cannot be changed. The buyer needs a new account in its country.

Distinguish Dashboard ownership from the business behind the account

Stripe’s account has several distinct kinds of identity. Changing one does not automatically change the others.

  • Dashboard owner: The Stripe user who controls account ownership.
  • Administrator: A user with broad Dashboard permissions. Administrator status is not the same as being the account owner.
  • Company representative: The individual Stripe verifies as authorized to represent the business.
  • Beneficial owner: An individual who owns or controls the legal entity.
  • Legal entity: The registered corporation, LLC, partnership, sole proprietorship, or other business associated with the account.
  • Account country: The country in which the Stripe business account is registered; Stripe says it cannot be changed on an existing account.

A user transfer does not establish that Stripe has approved a new legal entity, tax ID, representative, or ownership structure. Likewise, editing the business name does not necessarily give a new person control of the Dashboard.

Situation Likely path What to confirm with Stripe
The same legal entity continues after an equity sale Ask Support what must be updated; transfer Dashboard ownership and update representative, beneficial-owner, bank, and customer-facing details as applicable. Whether the entity remains eligible to use the account and which verification details are required.
A different legal entity will accept payments in the same country Contact Support before changing the tax ID or payout bank account. Stripe may approve updates or require a new account. Whether the existing account can be used by the buyer’s entity.
The acquiring entity is in another country Create a new account in the buyer’s country and request an eligible data transfer through Support. What data can be copied and what must be rebuilt or migrated separately.
The Stripe account is connected to a platform Use the applicable Connect ownership process rather than assuming the standard account steps apply. Whether the connected account is Full, Express, or managed without a Stripe-hosted Dashboard.

For an acquisition or sale, Stripe directs businesses to contact Support first to confirm which account, business, representative, ownership, and website details need to change. See Stripe’s sale and acquisition guidance.

Before closing, prepare the Stripe and payment handoff

Use the time before closing to establish who will control the account, who will receive payments, and how legacy transactions will be handled. The transaction agreement should allocate responsibility for pre-closing refunds, disputes, reserves, taxes, and customer-data obligations; legal and tax advice may be needed to determine those responsibilities.

  • Confirm whether the deal is a stock sale, asset sale, merger, or entity conversion, and identify the legal entity that will accept future payments.
  • Confirm the buyer’s country and registration details. Identify whether its intended Stripe account already exists.
  • Identify the current Stripe owner and administrators, and confirm whether the owner can complete a Dashboard ownership transfer.
  • Inventory pending payouts and available balance, refunds, disputes, active subscriptions and invoices, customer records, saved payment methods, API keys, webhook endpoints, apps, and any Connect relationships.
  • Record relevant settings for Billing, Tax, Radar, Checkout, Payment Links, receipts, and notifications.
  • Ask Stripe Support for the approved path before changing the legal entity, tax ID, or payout bank account.

In the Support request, include the Stripe account ID; the current and proposed legal entity names and countries; the transaction type and effective date; planned changes to tax ID, representatives, beneficial owners, website, bank account, and descriptor; whether the account uses Connect; and whether active subscriptions or stored payment methods must be preserved. Mention material pending disputes, refunds, reserves, or a negative balance so the transition plan accounts for them.

Transfer Dashboard ownership

For a standard Stripe account, the current account owner can transfer ownership to another user. The recipient needs the appropriate administrator-level access. Stripe’s labels and available actions may vary with account setup; its current instructions are in the account-owner transfer guide and user-role documentation.

Transfer to someone already on the team

  1. Open Team settings in the Stripe Dashboard.
  2. Find the intended user and give them the Administrator or Super Administrator role as required.
  3. Open that user’s overflow menu, choose Transfer ownership, and follow Stripe’s instructions.

Transfer to a new user

  1. Open Team settings and select New Member.
  2. Invite the intended successor at their email address and assign the required administrator-level role.
  3. Wait until the invitation is accepted.
  4. Return to Team settings, select the user, choose Transfer ownership, and follow the prompts.

Only the current owner can perform the normal transfer. If that person is unavailable, contact Stripe Support; Stripe may start a secure verification process to establish the requester’s identity and relationship to the business. Do not treat a completed ownership transfer as approval to substitute a different legal entity.

Update the representative and business information Stripe approves

After Support confirms the applicable changes, update the information that reflects the entity legally entitled to receive the payments. Depending on the account and Stripe’s review, this may include the company representative or owner information, beneficial owners, operating website, payout bank account, legal business name, tax ID, statement descriptor and phone number, receipt details, and owner email. Use the Dashboard fields Stripe makes available; Stripe says it may enable direct editing for new owner or representative details rather than asking for sensitive information by email. Do not send identity or payment information through ordinary email.

Change the company representative

  1. In the Dashboard, open Settings, then Business details.
  2. Locate the current account representative and select Edit or remove that person, as the Dashboard permits.
  3. Nominate a new representative or select an existing user, then complete the requested verification.

Stripe’s guidance says a new representative must be nominated within seven days after removing the previous one or payouts may be paused. Treat this as Stripe’s account guidance, not a universal legal deadline; account type and jurisdiction can affect the process. If the outgoing representative is also the Dashboard owner, arrange the owner transfer as well. If their email is inaccessible, contact Support. See Stripe’s representative-update instructions.

Have verification records ready

Requirements vary by country, entity type, account type, and Stripe’s review. Prepare the following so you can respond through the Dashboard or another channel Stripe specifies:

  • New payout bank-account information, website, and customer-support details.
  • Transaction or acquisition documents if Stripe asks for evidence of the ownership change.

Changing only a bank account may redirect payouts without establishing that the new entity is the verified merchant. Changing a tax ID without Support’s instructions may trigger verification issues or a determination that a new account is needed. Do not use either edit as a substitute for clarifying the account’s legal relationship with Stripe.

If the buyer’s entity is in another country, open a new account

Stripe says the country of an existing Stripe account cannot be changed. For an acquisition by a legal entity in a different country, its stated sequence is to transfer ownership to the new owner, have that owner create an account in the new business country, then contact Support to request transfer of relevant data. Read Stripe’s cross-border acquisition instructions.

This rule concerns an acquiring legal entity in another country. It does not mean that a business with the same legal entity can change its account country simply because it sells internationally, or that a parent company and local subsidiaries have interchangeable accounts. Ask Stripe about the specific entity and account structure.

If a new account is needed, plan a migration—not a one-click transfer

Stripe’s account-copy process is limited. It can copy some customer details and, depending on the process, certain payment data; it does not recreate the full operating history or subscription system in the new account. The original account remains intact. See Stripe’s account-copy instructions and its list of data that can be copied.

Customer records and payment methods

Copied customer information may include customer and billing names, email, phone, address, and metadata. Stripe says customer IDs may remain the same while payment-method IDs change. Cards, ACH, and some other payment data may be eligible depending on the migration route and payment method; do not assume every payment method or record can move.

Ordinary customer-record copying, copying payment-method objects, and importing sensitive card data are different workflows. A payment-data import may require a secure, PCI-compliant process coordinated with Stripe and, where applicable, the previous processor. Do not export card numbers to a spreadsheet, email them, or attempt an improvised transfer. Stripe’s guidance is available in its payment migration guide and payment-data import instructions. If a secure transfer is not available or appropriate, customers may need to enter their payment details again.

Subscriptions and billing dates

Stripe’s ordinary account-copy process does not automatically copy plans or subscriptions. Its documented approach is to recreate products and plans in the new account, use the same plan IDs where appropriate, add subscriptions to copied customers, and use a custom trial end date if needed to preserve billing dates. Follow Stripe’s subscription recreation guidance.

Build a cutover schedule that specifies the last charge on the old account, the first charge on the new one, billing-anchor treatment, failed-payment retries, proration, refund responsibility, and customer communications. Coordinate cancellation of old subscriptions with activation of new ones; otherwise customers may be charged twice or experience a gap in service.

Historical payments and open obligations

Individual charges, invoices, events, logs, coupons, and connected accounts are not generally carried over by ordinary account copying; neither are plans and subscriptions. Certain payment methods and guest customers may also be excluded. Historical transactions remain associated with the old account, so pre-closing refunds, disputes, reconciliation, accounting, and tax records may require continued access there. Keep the old account available for reference and legacy activity; the appropriate retention period depends on legal, tax, accounting, card-network, and contractual requirements.

Rebuild settings and integrations

A new account has its own API keys. Review application configuration and replace the old account’s credentials only as part of a controlled cutover. Stripe’s new-account settings checklist also calls for reviewing or recreating settings and integrations.

  • Secret and publishable API keys, account IDs in application configuration, and object-ID mappings for customers, products, prices, payment methods, subscriptions, invoices, and payment intents.
  • Webhook endpoints and signing secrets, plus event-handling and retry behavior.
  • OAuth or Connect relationships, connected accounts, apps, and platform configuration.
  • Billing retries, cancellation behavior, payout schedules, bank details, receipts, email notifications, Radar rules, payment methods, and Tax settings.
  • Team members, roles, and administrator access.

Use a cutover checklist to reduce interruptions

Before closing

  • Get Stripe’s direction on the existing account versus a new account, and complete verification for the buyer’s entity.
  • Inventory balances, pending payouts, open refunds and disputes, customers, payment methods, subscriptions, integrations, and reporting needs.
  • Agree who handles transactions initiated before closing and who answers customer questions during the changeover.
  • Build and test the new account’s configuration, migration, subscription schedule, and integration updates before routing live payments to it.

On the transition date

  • Apply the Support-approved changes or activate the new account only when its verification and payment setup are ready.
  • Coordinate the old and new subscription schedules to prevent duplicate or missed charges.
  • Update production credentials and webhook configuration deliberately, and verify that application events are reaching the intended account.
  • Reconcile test and live payments, refunds, and payouts against the correct account.

After the transition

  • Monitor payment acceptance, webhook delivery, payout status, retries, and customer support issues in both accounts.
  • Reconcile activity across the transition date and keep the old account available for legacy refunds, disputes, reporting, and records.
  • Remove the seller’s access when it is no longer needed, while preserving any agreed access necessary for transition duties.

Special case: Stripe Connect accounts

If the business is a connected account under a platform, do not assume the standard account-owner flow applies. Stripe’s procedure depends on the connected account’s Dashboard type:

  • Full Dashboard: The current owner generally transfers ownership; if unavailable, contact Stripe Support.
  • Express: The current owner can transfer ownership, or the platform administrator may be able to do so when the owner is unreachable.
  • No Stripe-hosted Dashboard: The platform manages the account.

Platforms should verify the business, current and proposed owners, business affiliation, and authorization before changing ownership. A transfer invitation may remain pending until the new owner accepts it. See Stripe’s connected-account ownership guidance.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Should you keep the old account or create a new one?

Keeping the existing account can reduce technical work when the same legal entity continues and Stripe approves the necessary personnel and business-detail updates. A new account may provide a clearer compliance and accounting boundary when the buyer is a distinct entity, the country changes, or Stripe will not approve repurposing the existing account. The latter path brings customer and payment-method migration, subscription recreation, settings work, and continued management of legacy transactions.

For a continuing multi-entity or multi-region structure, Stripe documents customer and payment-method sharing across accounts in an organization as a public-preview capability. Its documented workflow has consent requirements, payment-method limitations, and irreversible activation. It is an option to discuss for an ongoing organization structure, not a replacement for Support approval of an acquisition transfer. See Stripe’s organization sharing documentation.

Common mistakes to avoid

  • Changing only the bank account: A new payout destination does not establish that the buyer’s entity is the verified merchant.
  • Changing only the owner email: Dashboard control and legal-entity verification are separate.
  • Changing the tax ID before speaking with Stripe: This may prompt verification problems or a requirement for a new account.
  • Closing the old account as soon as the new one accepts payments: The old account may still be needed for historical records, refunds, disputes, and reconciliation.
  • Assuming subscriptions move with customers: Ordinary copying does not transfer the subscription system.
  • Reusing the old API keys: New accounts have their own keys; old credentials can route activity to the wrong account or fail authentication.
  • Sending card data manually: Use Stripe’s approved secure migration route or arrange for customers to provide payment details again.
  • Removing a representative without a replacement: Stripe warns that payouts may be paused if a new representative is not nominated within seven days.
  • Treating a Connect account like a direct account: The ownership process depends on the connected account’s Dashboard configuration.
