Choose Xodo Sign if you send many routine documents, want paid-plan sending without a stated document cap, or often need to edit PDFs before sending. Choose DocuSign if your organization depends on its integrations, enterprise administration, or specialized agreement workflows. For personal finances or a small business, compare the actual number of signing requests you send—not just the monthly subscription price.
The prices below are U.S. vendor-listed prices reported for August 16–18, 2026. Plans, regional prices, promotions, taxes, and negotiated terms can change. Check each vendor’s current offer before buying.
How Xodo Sign and DocuSign differ
Both services let people prepare documents, request electronic signatures, track progress, and retain a completed record. Their emphasis is different. Xodo Sign combines e-signatures with PDF editing, document preparation, templates, and a JSON-based REST API. DocuSign centers on e-signatures and extends into broader agreement workflows and management. Xodo describes its features at its features page; DocuSign outlines its U.S. eSignature plans and related capabilities on its pricing page.
The right choice depends on your document volume, how much preparation your PDFs need, and whether your other business systems already rely on one platform. Neither service is automatically the cheaper or safer choice for every user.

What the plans cost—and what the limits mean
Xodo Sign: a lower-cost path for frequent browser sending
Xodo’s publicly listed plans include a free tier for up to three documents per month, Basic at $10 per user per month billed yearly, and Professional at $16 per user per month billed yearly. The paid e-signature plans advertise unlimited documents. Basic includes three templates; Professional adds unlimited templates, advanced PDF editing, bulk-sending and SMS credits, branding, in-person signing, and AI summarization. Enterprise pricing is custom. These are vendor-listed U.S. prices as reported August 16–18, 2026, not a guarantee of the price available to every buyer. See Xodo Sign’s pricing page.
At the listed annual-billing rates, one Basic seat is $120 per year and one Professional seat is $192 per year, before taxes or added needs such as seats, SMS, or enterprise services. API usage is separate from ordinary e-signature plan usage: API Light is listed at $50 per month billed yearly for 50 API documents monthly; the free API Sandbox includes two production API documents. Do not treat unlimited browser-plan documents as unlimited API volume.
DocuSign: compare the envelope allowance with your sending habits
DocuSign’s U.S. pricing page lists Personal at $11 per month for five envelopes per month, Standard at $30 per user per month, and Business Pro at $45 per user per month. Standard and Business Pro list 100 envelopes per user per year on annual plans; those monthly prices are billed under an annual commitment. At those rates, one Standard seat is $360 per year and one Business Pro seat is $540 per year, before add-ons. Enhanced is custom priced. The page also notes additional charges can apply for SMS delivery and identity verification. Confirm current terms on DocuSign’s U.S. plan page.
An envelope is a signing request, not a synonym for one document. An envelope may contain multiple documents and signers, but it counts when sent, even if nobody completes it. Overage billing may apply. That makes DocuSign’s allowance less restrictive for a request containing several files than a simple document-count comparison suggests, but resends, corrections, and incomplete requests can consume allowance too.
Which price scenario matches you?
- One person sending three documents monthly: Xodo’s free plan may cover that stated volume. DocuSign Personal’s five-envelope allowance may suit someone sending up to five requests a month, assuming each request and its cost structure fit the workflow.
- One person sending 10–20 requests monthly: Xodo Basic’s listed unlimited paid-plan document sending can be attractive if these are separate routine sends. DocuSign Personal is capped at five envelopes monthly, while Standard lists 100 per user per year; estimate annual request volume and potential overages before comparing.
- A two-person team sending 100–200 requests annually: Two Xodo Basic seats would total $240 per year at the listed annual-billing rate. Two DocuSign Standard seats would total $720 per year at the listed monthly price under an annual commitment and include 200 envelopes per year across the two users. The fit depends on whether the requests are allocated per user, how many are actually sent, and whether DocuSign-specific features avoid other costs.
- A frequent-sending agency or contractor: Xodo can have a cost advantage when multiple separate documents are sent routinely and built-in PDF tools replace another app. Include additional seats, Professional features, API use, SMS, and any Enterprise needs in the estimate.
- A team needing bulk sending or stronger authentication: Compare Xodo Professional’s listed credits and authentication options with DocuSign Business Pro and any applicable add-ons. Credits, recipient methods, and overage terms matter more than the feature name alone.
- An application embedding signatures: Compare API contracts separately from browser subscriptions. Xodo publicly lists API Light at 50 API documents monthly; DocuSign API pricing and production limits require plan-specific confirmation. Model expected production volume and support needs before building around either platform.
These comparisons exclude taxes, promotions, regional differences, negotiated discounts, and costs of migration or implementation. A lower subscription price may not mean a lower total cost if changing systems disrupts integrations or requires rebuilding a workflow.

Documents are not envelopes
Xodo advertises unlimited documents on its listed paid e-signature plans, while its API plans have separate document allocations. DocuSign’s allowance is measured in envelopes. A single envelope can bundle multiple files and signers, but each sent envelope uses allowance whether or not it is completed. Sources: Xodo Sign pricing and DocuSign pricing and envelope details.
Before deciding that one allowance is larger, count the signing requests you actually send. Include resends and corrected requests, seasonal peaks, multiple files bundled into each request, and whether sending happens through a browser or an API. Also confirm how reminders, expiration, and canceled or replaced requests affect your own account’s usage and billing.

Preparing, sending, and tracking a document
Both platforms cover the main signing path: upload or import, place fields, add recipients, set routing, send, monitor progress, and retrieve a completed document and its audit record. The difference is how much surrounding work each can handle and which workflow controls appear at the plan level.
Where Xodo Sign is practical
- Built-in PDF preparation and editing reduce the need to switch applications for routine corrections.
- Templates, multiparty signing, reminders, expiration, and document visibility support recurring workflows.
- Xodo lists PIN and SMS authentication, in-person signing, and multiple-business management among its capabilities; check the applicable plan and credit terms.
- API-capable workflows include embedded signing and requesting, with production usage subject to the separate API plan.
Feature details are described by Xodo Sign and its pricing page.
Where DocuSign is practical
- Its listed plans include signing workflows, reminders, templates, mobile-responsive signing, and audit trails.
- Standard lists delegated signing and team-shared templates; Business Pro lists web forms, payment collection, interactive fields, data verification, and bulk sending.
- Higher or custom plans list additional routing and administration options, including document visibility, SSO, and remote online notarization availability.
These features are not necessarily included in every plan or region; check DocuSign’s plan comparison before relying on a particular capability.
PDF editing: a meaningful Xodo difference
Xodo Professional lists advanced PDF editing, including text edits, redaction, annotations, page rotation, page insertion or deletion, page ordering, stamps, shapes, and measurements. It also lists AI summarization. For people who repeatedly correct forms, remove sensitive information, or restructure attachments before sending, having preparation and signature steps in one workflow can save application switching. See Xodo’s listed Professional features.

Preparing signature fields is not the same as editing a PDF. DocuSign’s public eSignature plan page emphasizes signing, forms, workflow, integrations, and agreement management rather than positioning eSignature as a general PDF editor. That does not establish that DocuSign has no document-editing functions; confirm whether your specific package handles the edits you need or whether you would keep a separate PDF editor.
AI summarization should not be treated as legal review. Before sending confidential agreements through an AI feature, review the provider’s current data-handling, retention, and confidentiality terms. The listed feature alone does not establish how your particular data is processed.
Templates, integrations, and API fit
Templates and switching
Xodo says it supports importing DocuSign templates, which can help reduce setup work. Import does not prove that every rule or interaction carries over identically. Test recipient roles, signing order, conditional and calculated fields, dropdowns, checkboxes, branding, email content, reminders, attachments, authentication, and audit evidence. For API workflows, also verify template IDs and webhook behavior. Xodo’s feature claim appears at its features page.
Integrations
Xodo lists connections including Zapier, Dropbox, Gmail, Google Docs, Zoho, and Salesforce. DocuSign’s current U.S. pricing page advertises more than 1,000 partner integrations and names cloud storage, productivity, workplace, and business-system connections, including Google Drive, OneDrive, Dropbox, Box, Google Workspace, Microsoft 365, Slack, Microsoft Teams, Zoom, Stripe, Salesforce, Microsoft Dynamics, and NetSuite. Some advanced connections are limited to higher or custom plans. Sources: Xodo features and DocuSign plans.
A larger catalog is useful only if your exact CRM, storage, authentication, and export needs are covered at a plan you can buy. Verify the connector, permissions, field mapping, failure handling, and plan requirement rather than assuming every listed integration works with every subscription.
API and embedded signing
Xodo describes a REST/JSON API with embedded signing, embedded requesting, webhooks, OAuth 2.0, SDKs, hidden tags, bulk sending, and audit logs. Its public pricing gives a concrete entry point: the free API Sandbox includes two production API documents, and API Light lists 50 API documents per month for $50 per month billed yearly; API Business is custom priced. See Xodo’s API page and its pricing page.

DocuSign advertises industry APIs and a developer account, but a browser eSignature plan should not be assumed to provide unrestricted production API access. For either vendor, ask about production limits, rate limits, embedded flows, webhooks, OAuth, SDK coverage, template and authentication APIs, error handling, audit-log access, data residency, support, service levels, and API contract terms. The public plan page for DocuSign is here.
Security, legal validity, and regulated workflows
Xodo states that its signatures support the U.S. ESIGN Act and European eIDAS requirements. It also lists GDPR, SOC 2 Type 2, encrypted storage, tamper-evident audit trails, long-term validation, and signer activity records such as timestamps and IP addresses. These are vendor statements, not a guarantee that every workflow meets every legal or regulatory requirement. See Xodo’s validity and compliance information.
DocuSign’s U.S. plan page lists real-time audit trails and identifies higher-tier or custom availability for options including SMS and phone authentication, identity verification, data residency, HIPAA support through a business associate agreement, FedRAMP Moderate and DoD IL4, 21 CFR Part 11, Docusign Monitor, SSO, and remote online notarization. Verify exact eligibility, implementation, contract terms, and region with the vendor; these capabilities should not be assumed to come with every plan. See DocuSign’s current plan details.
Electronic-signature enforceability depends on jurisdiction and the facts of the transaction, including signer intent and consent, authentication, record retention, document integrity, audit evidence, and any industry-specific rules. A standard audit trail is not automatically a qualified electronic signature or proof that a workflow meets a specialized rule. For healthcare, financial, government, employment, high-value, or cross-border transactions, have legal or compliance staff confirm the required signature level, retention, identity checks, and contract terms before rollout.
Independent reader supportYour contribution helps us test, update, and keep practical guides available for everyone.Signer experience and administration
Neither service requires a recipient to buy a paid seat merely to sign: Xodo says recipients do not need a paid seat or account, and DocuSign says recipients do not need a DocuSign account. Those statements distinguish sender seats from recipient accounts; they do not settle every authentication or access requirement. Sources: Xodo Sign pricing and DocuSign pricing.
Compare the actual recipient journey on a phone and desktop. Check language availability, whether app installation is needed for your flow, authentication friction, accessibility, signing order, reminders, expiration, in-person signing, branding, redirect options, and any attachments. SMS verification can create friction or fail for signers without reliable phone access; decide whether an alternate method is available.

For administration, Xodo may suit a small organization that wants basic team management, several business identities, and PDF work in one place. DocuSign may suit an organization that needs its established integrations or higher-tier centralized management, SSO, support, and agreement workflows. Confirm the exact tier and support commitment before treating any enterprise control as included.
Which service fits each use case?
Freelancers and sole proprietors
For three or fewer documents a month, Xodo’s free tier is a straightforward starting point. DocuSign Personal allows five envelopes monthly, which may better fit someone sending more requests but still requires comparing the subscription cost and envelope-based limit. If you regularly edit client PDFs or send many separate requests, Xodo Basic or Professional may be more economical at the listed annual rates.
Small businesses and agencies
Consider Xodo when recurring paperwork, frequent separate sends, templates, and PDF preparation matter more than a particular enterprise connector. Choose Professional if you need its advanced PDF tools or the listed additional features. Consider DocuSign Standard or Business Pro when team sharing, delegated signing, forms, payment collection, or existing business-system connections justify its higher listed subscription cost.
Real estate, construction, legal, HR, and sales teams
These teams often depend on routing, identity checks, attachments, record retention, CRM links, and repeatable templates. Do not choose on price alone: test the actual documents and signer sequence, review audit exports, and confirm authentication and retention requirements. DocuSign’s broader enterprise and integration options may matter where already embedded; Xodo’s editing and unlimited paid-plan document sending may matter where document preparation and volume dominate.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minute2Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errors3Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitchesHigh-volume operations and SaaS products
For browser-based, high-volume sending, Xodo’s paid e-signature plans’ unlimited-document claim is a clear pricing distinction. For an application integration, model API volume and support separately; Xodo’s public API Light allocation is finite, and DocuSign API limits and commercial terms need confirmation. In both cases, validate webhooks, retries, peak rates, audit-data export, and a manual fallback before relying on an automated flow.
Regulated or enterprise buyers
Use a requirements checklist rather than a broad security ranking. Verify applicable standards and attestations, BAA or other contractual terms, data residency, SSO, identity assurance, support, retention, and required signature type at the exact plan level. DocuSign’s higher/custom options may better align with some specialized requirements, but no brand name alone establishes compliance.
Switching from DocuSign to Xodo Sign
Template import can help, but a switch affects stored records, integrations, training, signer expectations, and evidence—not just templates. Run the new platform alongside the existing workflow until critical cases pass.
- Inventory the current setup: list templates, recipient roles, routing, conditional fields, authentication, branding, reminders, integrations, API calls, webhooks, retention rules, and renewal or cancellation dates.
- Export and preserve records: retain completed documents and their audit evidence, along with records required for your own retention or litigation-hold policies, before closing the existing account.
- Import and inspect templates: compare fields, routing, attachments, email content, and branding. Rebuild any rules that did not migrate exactly.
- Test representative transactions: include a routine agreement, a multiparty or sequential signature, an edited or redacted PDF, a rejected or expired request, and a case requiring authentication.
- Test integrations and API behavior: confirm production limits, webhook delivery, template identifiers, error recovery, audit evidence, and any manual fallback.
- Run a parallel pilot: involve actual senders and signers on mobile and desktop; verify completed records and train users before moving critical workflows.
- Cancel only after validation: confirm exports, retention, outstanding requests, billing, and any contractual notice obligations before ending the old service.
Xodo’s vendor-authored comparison makes a case for switching, but its promotional positioning is not independent evidence that your particular migration will be seamless: Xodo’s DocuSign comparison.
