A solutions architect designs a particular system, product, or project; an enterprise architect guides how architecture, technology, and business change fit together across an organization or a substantial part of it. The distinction is mainly scope, time horizon, stakeholders, and decision rights—not a universal ranking of seniority. In smaller organizations, one person may do both jobs, and titles vary between employers.

What does a solutions architect do?

A solutions architect turns a defined business or technical need into a workable end-to-end design. The need might be a cloud migration, customer portal, data platform, or ERP implementation. The architect translates requirements into system capabilities, weighs alternatives, and helps delivery teams build something secure, reliable, operable, and fit for purpose. Microsoft describes the role as advising stakeholders and translating business requirements into secure, scalable, and reliable designs in its solutions architect career path. Its Azure architecture guidance also emphasizes understanding stakeholder needs and balancing business, technical, and operational considerations.

Typical responsibilities and outputs

  • Clarify business goals, user needs, requirements, constraints, and assumptions.
  • Design system boundaries, components, interfaces, data flows, integrations, and deployment patterns.
  • Evaluate platforms, cloud services, products, vendors, and build-versus-buy options.
  • Address security, privacy, performance, availability, resilience, scalability, operations, and cost.
  • Document designs through architecture diagrams, decision records, nonfunctional requirements, options analyses, migration sequences, and risk or exception records.
  • Review implementation plans, help resolve design issues, and check that the delivered system meets its intended requirements.

The role is not necessarily a coding job, project-management job, or sole owner of implementation. Some solutions architects work hands-on; others primarily set design direction and provide technical leadership while engineering, operations, or vendors deliver the system.

What does an enterprise architect do?

An enterprise architect considers how business strategy, capabilities, information, applications, technology, security, and change fit together across an organization, business unit, or transformation portfolio. The work connects strategic goals to target states, standards, investment choices, and a sequence of changes. The Open Group describes strategic architecture as a high-level, long-term view that guides operational and change activity in its TOGAF material.

Typical responsibilities and outputs

  • Translate business strategy into architectural implications and assess current capabilities and systems.
  • Map business capabilities and application or technology portfolios; identify duplication, technical debt, obsolescence, and concentration risk.
  • Define target states, principles, standards, reference architectures, and technology road maps.
  • Connect initiatives and investment portfolios to strategic priorities, dependencies, and transition states.
  • Facilitate decisions across business units and architecture domains; manage governance and exceptions.
  • Present trade-offs and transformation options to executives and other nontechnical stakeholders.

Enterprise architecture is not just producing high-level diagrams. Its value depends on connecting architecture to investment, governance, risk, sequencing, operating models, and business outcomes. The Open Group’s role-based material for enterprise architecture practitioners describes work that can include end-to-end architecture, transformation, and governance. An enterprise architect may specialize in business, data, applications, technology, security, or a particular domain; the title does not guarantee equal depth across all of them.

Solutions architect vs. enterprise architect: the practical differences

Dimension Solutions architect Enterprise architect
Scope A defined product, system, program, platform, migration, or business problem An organization, business unit, architecture domain, or transformation portfolio
Typical question What should we build, buy, integrate, or configure for this need? How should the organization evolve, and how should its investments fit together?
Time horizon Usually a project, product life cycle, or near- to medium-term delivery plan Usually a medium- to long-term target state and transformation road map
Main stakeholders Product owners, engineers, security and operations teams, vendors, delivery teams, and business sponsors Executives, business-unit leaders, portfolio managers, CIO/CTO organizations, governance bodies, and domain architects
Typical outputs Solution design, integration and deployment models, decision records, requirements, technology recommendations, and implementation sequencing Principles, capability maps, target-state models, standards, portfolio assessments, governance decisions, and road maps
Technical emphasis Often deeper in the technologies and interfaces used by the particular solution Broad across business and technology domains; depth varies by role and organization
Decision boundary Recommendations or design authority within a project or product boundary Direction, constraints, standards, and governance across domains, initiatives, or portfolios
What success looks like A feasible, secure, operable, affordable solution that is delivered successfully Investments and systems support strategy, manage risk, and move toward a coherent target state

These are common patterns, not universal job specifications. AWS describes solutions architecture as one of several technology-architecture roles—including infrastructure, data, networking, and security—that may sit within an enterprise-architecture capability in its architecture guidance.

The central distinction: solution fitness versus enterprise coherence

A solutions architect optimizes the fitness of a defined solution: whether it meets requirements and can be built and operated under real constraints. An enterprise architect optimizes coherence and direction across a wider landscape: whether systems and investments reinforce strategic goals, avoid needless duplication, manage shared risks, and move the organization toward a viable target state.

Enterprise architecture is therefore not simply solutions architecture at a larger scale. It adds cross-organization questions about capabilities, investment priorities, operating models, governance, and the order in which change can happen. Conversely, broad scope does not make an enterprise architect automatically more technically expert in every system or platform.

How the roles work together: replacing a fragmented customer-service platform

Enterprise architect: set direction across the landscape

  • Map customer-service capabilities and the applications that support them.
  • Identify duplication in CRM, identity, integration, and reporting.
  • Set target-state principles, such as common identity or API-based integration, and assess whether platforms should be consolidated, modernized, or replaced.
  • Sequence a migration road map and define which deviations from shared standards need review.

Solutions architect: design a deliverable initiative

  • Design the first replacement or migration, selecting specific platforms, services, data stores, identity patterns, and deployment arrangements.
  • Define interfaces to billing, identity, analytics, and support systems.
  • Work with delivery teams to test security, performance, resilience, and operational assumptions.

Where their work meets

The architects jointly assess options, dependencies, and risks; decide what must be delivered immediately and what can be phased; and document justified exceptions. The enterprise architect should not dictate every implementation detail. The solutions architect should not optimize the project in a way that creates unacceptable duplication or risk elsewhere. Delivery evidence can also flow back upward: implementation constraints may require changes to a road map or target state.

How daily work and skills differ

Solutions architecture

Day-to-day work often includes requirements workshops, design sessions with engineers, platform and vendor evaluation, proof-of-concept oversight, architecture reviews, security and operational reviews, and troubleshooting during delivery. Useful strengths include systems design, cloud and infrastructure, application and integration architecture, data, security, reliability, cost analysis, and implementation awareness.

In a cloud-specific position, platform knowledge may be central. AWS offers associate- and professional-level Solutions Architect certifications. For its professional certification, AWS recommends at least two years of experience designing and implementing AWS solutions; see the associate and professional certification pages. A credential can demonstrate platform knowledge, but it does not by itself establish sound judgment, delivery experience, or stakeholder skills.

Enterprise architecture

Day-to-day work often includes strategy and portfolio discussions, capability and operating-model analysis, standards and reference-architecture work, governance forums, road-map planning, application-portfolio reviews, and executive briefings. TOGAF is a framework and method for organizing architecture work, not a universal job description or a requirement for every enterprise architect. The Open Group presents its TOGAF certification as a credential associated with enterprise-architecture careers. AWS notes that TOGAF or the Zachman Framework may be used as part of an enterprise-architecture capability in its architecture guidance. Framework knowledge can provide shared structure and terminology; it does not replace organizational experience or successful transformation work. Teams may adapt a framework to their needs rather than applying every artifact formally.

Is an enterprise architect more senior?

Sometimes, but the title alone cannot establish seniority. Enterprise architects often have a broader organizational remit and may influence standards, road maps, and portfolio choices. A senior solutions architect may nevertheless have greater technical depth in a platform, system, or industry problem, and either role may have limited formal authority. Reporting lines and decision rights vary; an enterprise architect is not automatically the manager or “boss” of every solutions architect.

Look at the decisions the person can make, the scope of those decisions, the stakeholders involved, and what outcomes they own. Governance can clarify and manage risk without turning every departure from a standard into an automatic veto.

Which role might fit your career goals?

Solutions architecture may suit you if

  • You prefer concrete systems, technical depth, and close collaboration with engineering.
  • You want to see the results of a design in a product or implementation.
  • You enjoy rapid trade-offs, delivery constraints, and work centered on a platform or product domain.

Enterprise architecture may suit you if

  • You prefer cross-organization questions, strategic ambiguity, and longer-term road maps.
  • You want to work on capabilities, portfolios, governance, and the sequencing of change.
  • You are comfortable influencing executives and business units without necessarily owning implementation.

Before accepting a role, clarify its actual remit rather than relying on the title. Ask what the architect owns, how close the work is to implementation, who the stakeholders are, how much of the job is customer or pre-sales support, what decision rights apply, and how success is assessed after six or twelve months. Also confirm whether “enterprise” means organization-wide architecture or simply work with large customers.

How titles and responsibilities change by organization

  • Small companies: One architect may set technology direction, design individual systems, choose vendors, and guide delivery. The conceptual distinction remains, but the jobs may be combined.
  • Consulting and cloud vendors: A solutions architect may advise external customers, run workshops, build prototypes, recommend a vendor platform, or support pre-sales. That is not necessarily the same remit as an internal solutions architect.
  • Product companies: The role may bridge product management, engineering, sales, and customers, combining architecture with technical product strategy or customer enablement.
  • Regulated industries: Enterprise architects may take on stronger responsibilities for compliance, privacy, resilience, records, and technology risk. Solutions architects still need to design the detailed controls for their systems.
  • Agile or decentralized organizations: Architecture work may be distributed among product teams, with an enterprise function focused on principles, guardrails, road maps, and cross-team dependencies.
  • Domain and hybrid roles: Business, data, security, application, infrastructure, and platform architects can sit between enterprise and solution levels. “Enterprise solution architect” may mean a cross-domain solution designer, not an enterprise architect in the strict sense.

Can a solutions architect become an enterprise architect?

Yes. There is no mandatory career sequence, but moving toward enterprise architecture generally means extending your perspective beyond individual systems. A common route begins in engineering, infrastructure, data, business analysis, or consulting, then moves through technical leadership, platform or domain architecture, and solutions architecture. A move into enterprise architecture calls for experience with:

  • Business capabilities, strategy, and operating models.
  • Portfolio-level trade-offs, investment choices, and dependencies across initiatives.
  • Governance, organizational change, and road-map development.
  • Executive communication and facilitation across business and technology groups.

The reverse move is also possible. An enterprise architect shifting toward solutions architecture may need to refresh detailed knowledge of current platforms, integration, security controls, deployment, and operational constraints.

Common mistakes to avoid

  • Reducing the difference to project versus company size: Scope matters, but so do time horizon, decision rights, stakeholders, and outcomes.
  • Assuming a solution design is just a list of cloud services: Interfaces, security, resilience, operations, cost, migration, and requirements all affect whether it works.
  • Treating the target state as a single perfect end point: Real transformation usually requires affordable, workable transition states that account for skills, contracts, timing, and migration risk.
  • Ignoring operational ownership: A design needs clear responsibility for monitoring, incidents, patching, identity, data quality, recovery, and lifecycle management.
  • Ignoring nonfunctional requirements: Performance, availability, recovery, privacy, compliance, accessibility, maintainability, and cost can determine whether a design is viable.
  • Applying frameworks mechanically or buying a repository before defining its purpose: First establish decision rights, ownership, data stewardship, update practices, and the questions architecture information should answer. A framework or tool cannot create those operating practices on its own.
