The company-sponsored survey argues that warehouses have an automation and systems-integration gap: respondents place high value on warehouse-management software (WMS), yet report that automation remains partial. Those figures are useful as a directional snapshot of industry sentiment, not as an independent benchmark of every warehouse or proof that a particular WMS will generate a return.
This distinction matters in 2026. The report is a 2024 snapshot, and the public announcement does not disclose enough methodology to establish how representative its respondents are. Warehouse leaders should use it to frame questions, then test any investment against facility-level data, integration requirements and a quantified business case.
What Hopstack announced
Hopstack released the report on February 23, 2024, describing it as a survey and expert-insight analysis of warehouse challenges, automation, key performance indicators, operational gaps and growth opportunities. The announcement names warehouse professionals, managers and other industry stakeholders as its intended audience. The report landing page is available at Hopstack’s report page; the release was also covered by TechAnnouncer.
The release says more than 50 industry experts contributed. The accessible announcement does not identify the full sampling frame, response rate, field dates, respondent geography, company-size mix or question wording. Those omissions prevent the results from being treated as a statistically representative census of warehouses.
The report’s headline statistics
| Reported figure | What the source says | How to read it | Qualification |
|---|---|---|---|
| 60% | Experts recognized WMS as a key automation solution. | Respondents see software as an important part of modernization. | This is a reported opinion, not a measured share of all warehouses. |
| 85% | Experts considered integrated WMS highly important for growth and efficiency. | Integration is viewed as strategically important by the surveyed group. | It does not mean 85% of warehouses use an integrated WMS or will achieve a specified gain. |
| 70% | Experts believed more than 20% of warehouse-operations budgets should go to technology upgrades. | Many respondents favor material technology spending. | The figure expresses a budget preference; it is not a recommended percentage for every operation. |
| 70% | Respondents indicated that up to 25% of warehouse tasks are automated. | Automation appears uneven or limited across the surveyed operations. | The public summary does not define which tasks, systems or facilities are counted. |
| One-third | The release says this share estimated that fewer than 20% of warehouses were automated. | It reinforces the report’s “automation gap” theme. | This additional statistic comes from the secondary release; its wording and methodology should be checked against the full downloadable report. |
| More than 50 | The release says more than 50 industry experts contributed. | It indicates a small expert survey rather than a population-wide study. | The public material does not show how participants were recruited or weighted. |
The percentages come from Hopstack’s report-page teaser unless otherwise noted. They should not be blended with independent performance benchmarks or vendor case studies.

What “the automation gap” actually means
Warehouse automation is not a yes-or-no condition. A site may use barcode scanning while keeping picking manual, run conveyors without automated replenishment, or automate inventory updates but not physical handling. A robot may operate in one zone while other workflows remain labor-intensive. Software automation and physical automation can also advance at different speeds.
Consequently, the reported task percentages are better understood as signs of partial and uneven automation than as a universal ranking of warehouse sophistication. The operational question is which bottleneck is expensive enough to justify change: travel time, receiving delays, inventory errors, labor availability, peak-season capacity or another constraint.

Why integrated WMS matters operationally
An integrated WMS can provide a shared control layer for activities that are often split among spreadsheets, an ERP, order-management tools and equipment software. Depending on the product and configuration, that layer may connect:
What’s actually slowing this PC down?
Pick the symptom - the matching free tool is one click away.
- Receiving, quality checks and putaway
- Location, lot, batch, serial and expiry control
- Replenishment, cycle counting and inventory adjustments

Problems the report is trying to surface
The announcement frames the opportunity around familiar warehouse-management pressures:
- Inventory inaccuracies and weak real-time visibility
- Slow receiving and putaway
- Inefficient picking routes and manual allocation
- Disconnected sales channels and carrier workflows
- Shipping errors and difficult returns processing
- Limited KPI visibility for labor, throughput and service levels
- Labor shortages, training demands and peak-season volatility
- Legacy systems that do not exchange reliable data
- High cost and complexity when physical automation is added
The publicly visible summary says the report covers processes, KPIs and operational gaps, but it does not publish a complete chapter-by-chapter set of findings. Readers should therefore avoid attributing a specific recommendation to the report unless the full document states it.
Rank #4

What the report does not prove
It does not establish universal ROI
An 85% response that integrated WMS is “highly important” measures perceived importance. It does not provide a payback period, implementation cost, total cost of ownership or causal evidence that a specific WMS produced a financial return.
It does not prove causation
The figures do not show that buying software caused higher throughput, lower labor cost or better service. Results can depend on process design, master data, training, layout, order profile and management execution.

It is not an independent market census
Hopstack sponsored the report and sells warehouse-management software. That commercial relationship does not invalidate the survey, but it is a reason to separate respondent sentiment from independent industry measurement.
Definitions remain unclear
The accessible pages do not define whether “automation” means physical equipment, software workflows, automated facilities, task share or a respondent’s estimate. They also do not establish whether “experts” and “warehouse professionals” describe identical groups.
Independent reader supportYour contribution helps us test, update, and keep practical guides available for everyone.A practical way to act on the findings
- Map the current workflow. Document receiving, putaway, picking, packing, dispatch, returns and inventory adjustments, including manual handoffs and exceptions.
- Set a baseline. Track order and inventory accuracy, dock-to-stock time, pick rate, lines per labor hour, on-time shipment rate, return-processing time, cost per order, space utilization and labor utilization.
- Find the costliest bottleneck. Use measured delay, error and labor data rather than assuming that robotics or a new WMS is the answer.
- Clean the data and processes. Correct duplicate SKUs, dimensions, weights, units of measure, location labels, lot or serial records and inventory balances before migration.
- Specify integrations. List required connections to the ERP, storefronts, marketplaces, carriers, transportation systems, EDI, scanners, printers and automation equipment.
- Run a bounded pilot. Select one facility, client, zone or workflow with defined success thresholds and a fallback procedure.
- Measure against the baseline. Compare accuracy, cycle time, labor, service and total project cost; do not rely solely on demonstrations or vendor projections.
- Scale after adoption is proven. Confirm training, exception handling, support coverage, data quality and downtime procedures before expanding.
When WMS or robotics may be a poor fit
- Order volume is low, highly seasonal or too volatile to support the business case.
- SKU and order profiles change faster than the proposed automation can be reconfigured.
- The facility is leased and cannot be modified economically.
- Exception rates are high and maintenance or engineering resources are limited.
- Inventory data is unreliable and there is no funded cleanup plan.
- The operation needs only basic inventory tracking and cannot absorb implementation overhead.
- A relocation is imminent, making a major deployment difficult to stabilize.
- No internal owner is available for training, change management and vendor governance.
How to evaluate Hopstack specifically
Hopstack’s site positions its software for warehouses, fulfillment centers, 3PLs, omnichannel brands and e-commerce operations, with capabilities that include warehouse management, fulfillment, inventory, shipping, analytics, 3PL billing, device control and integrations. Treat that description as a starting point for due diligence, not as proof of fit.

- Can it handle the required receiving, replenishment, picking, packing, returns, cross-docking, kitting and backorder rules?
- Are multi-warehouse, multi-client 3PL billing and customer-specific workflows supported?
- Which ERP, marketplace, carrier, EDI, scanner, printer, RFID and robotics connections are standard?
- What data is synchronized in real time, and how are failed or delayed messages reconciled?
Commercial and governance questions
- Is pricing based on users, orders, facilities, inventory volume, modules or implementation scope?
- What are the minimum fees, contract term, migration charges, integration fees and hardware costs?
- What onboarding, training, support, uptime and data-export commitments are contractual?
- Which security controls, audit logs, recovery objectives and regional data requirements apply to the purchased service?
- Can Hopstack provide references with comparable SKU counts, order volumes and operational complexity?
The official site directs prospects to a demo at Hopstack’s contact page rather than publishing self-service pricing. The consulted pages displayed security badges, including ISO 27001 and SOC references; buyers should request the certificate scope, dates and contractual documentation instead of treating a badge as a complete security assessment.
Bottom line
Hopstack’s report is useful as a directional account of how a surveyed group views WMS integration, technology spending and partial automation. It is not a universal warehouse benchmark, an ROI study or an independent comparison of WMS vendors. A sound investment decision requires facility-specific baselines, clean master data, tested integrations, a limited pilot, quantified economics and comparison with ERP modules, enterprise WMS products, 3PL specialists, fulfillment platforms or process improvements that may solve the same bottleneck.
