After a 2026 retrial rejected punitive damages, the U.S. District Court for the Central District of California entered a $17,872,253 award for common-law misappropriation, plus post-judgment interest. Enforcement is stayed until 30 days after the appeal mandate; the judgment does not establish that payment has been made.
Why was MGA sued over L.O.L. dolls?
Grand Hustle, Pretty Hustle and OMG Girlz LLC brought claims against MGA Entertainment and its founder, Isaac Larian, concerning L.O.L. Surprise! O.M.G. dolls. The dispute centered on whether particular dolls infringed the OMG Girlz’ trade dress or misappropriated their names, likenesses or identities. Trade dress concerns the distinctive visual presentation associated with a product or brand; misappropriation is a separate claim about using a person’s identity without authorization.
The case was not a finding that every L.O.L. doll copied the group, nor did the jury decide every claim in favor of the plaintiffs. The court’s amended judgment distinguishes findings by doll and claim.
Which dolls were involved in the jury’s findings?
Seven dolls at the center of the plaintiffs’ claims
At the 2024 trial, the jury found for Grand Hustle, Pretty Hustle and OMG Girlz LLC on both trade dress infringement and common-law misappropriation of name, likeness or identity concerning these seven dolls:

- Downtown B.B.
- Punk Grrrl
- Virtuelle
- Honeylicious
- Miss Independent
- City Babe
- Shadow — trade dress infringement only
- Miss Glam — misappropriation only
How did the $71.5 million verdict change?
The Associated Press reported the original September 2024 jury award as $71.5 million: about $17.9 million in actual damages and $53.6 million in punitive damages. The punitive portion was later revisited through post-trial proceedings and a limited retrial. The 2026 amended judgment—not the original headline figure—sets out the later damages disposition.

| Procedural stage | Amount or result | What it represents |
|---|---|---|
| September 2024 jury verdict, as reported by the Associated Press | $71.5 million | Reported total, including about $17.9 million actual damages and $53.6 million punitive damages. |
| July 1, 2026 retrial | No punitive damages | The jury found no malice, oppression or fraud for the seven dolls considered at retrial. |
| July 22, 2026 amended final judgment | $17,872,253 | The court adopted the advisory disgorgement award for common-law misappropriation. |
The retrial, which ran from June 23 to July 1, 2026, asked whether MGA and Larian acted with malice, oppression or fraud regarding misappropriation involving the seven dolls. The jury answered no. The judgment states that the jury did not find those conditions by clear and convincing evidence for any of the seven, so it awarded no punitive damages.
What does the later judgment award—and what did it reject?
The amended judgment adopts $17,872,253 in disgorgement for common-law misappropriation. It does not award disgorgement of MGA’s profits under the Lanham Act. These are distinct remedies attached to different legal claims, so the judgment’s common-law award should not be described as a Lanham Act profit award.

- 4 Fan-favorite OMG characters to collect in all NEW looks, including: Candylicious, Kitty K, Bubblegum DJ, Miss Royale
- Each doll has stunning features, fabulous fashions, premium rooted hair, and their own unique style!
- Includes 1 OMG fashion doll
The court also entered judgment for MGA and Larian on specified statutory misappropriation, statutory unfair-competition and common-law unfair-competition claims. Accordingly, it would be inaccurate to say the plaintiffs won every claim. The judgment reflects different results for different causes of action and remedies.
Has the money been paid?
The amended judgment provides for post-judgment interest on $17,872,253 at 3.99%, compounded annually, from the judgment date until payment. It stays enforcement until 30 days after issuance of the appeal mandate and defers fees and costs until after the mandate. Those provisions do not establish that the award has been paid or determine the eventual outcome of the appeal.

What did the OMG Girlz say after the 2024 verdict?
After the original verdict, OMG Girlz member Bahja Rodriguez told the Associated Press: “This is for creatives everywhere,” and, “No longer will we be bullied into silence when it comes to others profiting off of our ideas and creativity.” Those comments followed the 2024 jury result; they do not change the later damages disposition in the amended judgment.
