There is no established finding that the National Society of Leadership and Success (NSLS) is literally a scam. NSLS is an operating membership organization, but an invitation does not by itself prove that your college endorsed the message, that induction is automatic, or that the $95 fee is worthwhile for you. Verify the invitation with your school, read every required step and checkout option, and save the refund terms before paying.
What NSLS membership officially includes
NSLS says membership requires a one-time $95 payment at enrollment. Its official description says the fee provides lifetime access to the Members Area and member benefits, including the Foundations of Leadership program. NSLS also says membership does not expire and that there are no additional mandatory membership costs. Check the live terms at NSLS’s membership-fee FAQ because prices and checkout offers can change.
Advanced and Executive Leadership programs are described by NSLS as optional paid purchases, separate from the included foundation program. Do not assume that an invitation includes those courses or that buying them is required for ordinary membership.
Refund window
NSLS’s Member FAQ states that membership is eligible for a full refund within 30 days of the initial payment. Treat that as a deadline: review the current policy before checkout, keep your receipt, and submit any request in writing before the 30 days ends. The current FAQ is at https://info.nsls.org/member-faq.

Why people describe invitations as misleading
The key questions are different: Does NSLS exist? Did my college actually nominate me? Will I be inducted automatically? Is the program worth $95? A “yes” to the first question does not answer the others.
NSLS says chapter nomination criteria are guided by university partners. That does not mean every letter, email, text, or social-media message was sent or endorsed by your school. A campus listing can show that a chapter exists without validating the origin of a particular invitation. For example, the University of Denver lists an NSLS student organization and tells invitees that joining is their choice: University of Denver NSLS chapter page.

What BBB records do—and do not—show
BBB complaint and review pages contain individual consumer accounts about invitation expectations, induction requirements, delayed or missing materials, merchandise, charges, refund requests, and difficulty reaching support. Some records are marked answered or resolved, and NSLS posts responses describing its interpretation of the events and its refund policy. Read the complaints and replies at BBB complaints and BBB reviews page 1 and page 2.
These are allegations and business responses, not a representative survey, court judgment, or BBB finding that NSLS committed fraud. They cannot establish how common any problem is. In its replies, NSLS describes the fee as one-time, says schools guide nomination criteria, and says certain advanced courses are optional; those statements are the organization’s account.

How to check an invitation before paying
- Contact your institution independently. Use the phone number or student-activities website you already trust, not a link in the invitation. Ask whether your school has an NSLS chapter, whether your name was nominated, and which induction requirements apply locally.
- Inspect the sender and checkout page. Confirm that the payment page is an official NSLS domain, that the total is $95 rather than an added product or course, and that optional items are clearly labeled.
- Read the induction steps. Ask whether orientation, leadership training, speaker broadcasts, and other activities must be completed before induction. Membership payment alone may not equal completed induction.
- Record the terms. Save the confirmation email, the refund language, the date and amount paid, and screenshots of any optional purchases.
- Decide on value, not status language. Compare the specific benefits you can use—program access, campus activities, networking, or scholarships if separately described—with the one-time fee. No source reviewed here establishes scholarship odds, guaranteed awards, or a typical financial return.

When declining is the sensible choice
- Your college cannot confirm the nomination or chapter.
- The message pressures you to pay immediately or hides the price until late in checkout.
- You cannot identify the induction requirements or the refund deadline.
- The benefits do not match goals you actually have, such as leadership practice or campus networking.
- You are being asked to buy an advanced course, merchandise, or another add-on you did not intend to purchase.
If you already paid and want a refund
Check the payment date first. If it is within the published 30-day window, use the official support route in the Member FAQ, state that you are requesting a membership refund, and include your order details. Keep copies of the request and any reply. If the organization does not resolve the matter, your card issuer or payment service can explain its dispute process; provide your records and follow its deadlines.
Independent reader supportYour contribution helps us test, update, and keep practical guides available for everyone.Bottom line
Calling NSLS “literally a scam” goes beyond the evidence available here. The practical warning is narrower and more useful: confirm that your school recognizes the invitation, understand which steps are required for induction, separate included benefits from optional paid programs, and judge the stated benefits against the one-time $95 cost before enrolling.
