GoDaddy is the better choice for most beginners, small businesses, standard blogs, portfolios, and ordinary WordPress websites. It packages hosting, control panels, WordPress tools, backups, SSL, and customer support into a simpler product. AWS is better for developers, custom applications, unusual server requirements, and businesses that need cloud flexibility. For most websites considering AWS, Amazon Lightsail is the practical starting point—not raw Amazon EC2.
The important distinction is that GoDaddy sells packaged hosting products, while AWS provides infrastructure and separate services that you must configure and operate.
GoDaddy vs AWS: the short answer
| Situation | Better choice | Why |
|---|---|---|
| Beginner business website | GoDaddy | Simpler setup, conventional controls, and support |
| Standard WordPress blog | GoDaddy Managed WordPress | Updates, caching, SSL, migration tools, and backups are bundled |
| Several small websites | GoDaddy cPanel hosting | Multi-site hosting with familiar cPanel tools |
| WordPress with server access | AWS Lightsail | One-click WordPress plus virtual-server control |
| Custom application | AWS Lightsail or EC2 | More control over software, networking, and deployment |
| Static HTML/CSS/JavaScript site | AWS S3 + CloudFront or GoDaddy | AWS can scale efficiently, but requires more setup |
| High-growth, multi-service application | AWS | Access to databases, load balancing, CDN, monitoring, and other cloud services |
These are not equivalent hosting products
“AWS hosting” can mean several different architectures:
- Lightsail: simplified virtual servers with bundled monthly plans.
- EC2: configurable virtual machines requiring substantially more administration.
- S3 and CloudFront: object storage and content delivery for static websites.
- Route 53: DNS and domain services.
- Additional AWS services: databases, load balancers, queues, monitoring, logging, WAF, and security controls.
That is why the fairest comparison is usually GoDaddy Managed WordPress or cPanel hosting versus Lightsail. EC2 is appropriate only when you need its additional control. AWS’s web-hosting overview and architecture guidance describe a collection of services rather than one all-inclusive hosting plan.

GoDaddy hosting explained
GoDaddy’s cPanel hosting follows the traditional shared-hosting model. You choose a plan, connect a domain, install an application, manage files and databases through cPanel, and contact GoDaddy if you need assistance. It is generally suitable for small websites that do not require root access or unusual server software.
GoDaddy also offers Managed WordPress, which abstracts away much of the server administration. Its documentation lists WordPress installation, automatic core updates, performance caching, SSL, migration tools, SFTP, phpMyAdmin, security features, and backups among the available features. See the Managed WordPress documentation for plan-specific details.
Managed hosting is convenient, but it is deliberately less flexible. GoDaddy restricts some plugins for security, performance, duplication, or compatibility reasons, and its Managed WordPress product does not support WordPress multisite networks. A custom application, unusual daemon, or special server configuration may require a VPS or another provider.
AWS hosting explained
Amazon Lightsail
Lightsail’s WordPress blueprint lets you deploy WordPress on a virtual server with a simplified AWS console. Lightsail includes tools such as one-click SSH, static IP configuration, DNS management, monitoring, and snapshots.

It is easier than EC2, but it is not managed WordPress. You remain responsible for operating-system updates, WordPress and plugin maintenance, server hardening, TLS, backups, troubleshooting, and recovery.

Amazon EC2
EC2 gives you more control over the virtual machine, networking, storage, and deployment architecture. That flexibility is valuable for experienced developers, but it introduces decisions involving Linux administration, firewalls, IAM, web servers, databases, monitoring, scaling, and billing.
For a basic brochure site or first WordPress project, EC2 is usually unnecessary complexity. Choose it when the application has clear requirements that Lightsail cannot meet.
S3, CloudFront, and Route 53
Static sites can be hosted with S3 and delivered through CloudFront. However, a direct S3 website endpoint does not support HTTPS. CloudFront is required for HTTPS, along with DNS configuration through Route 53 or another provider.

Pricing: compare the total cost, not the headline price
GoDaddy pricing
GoDaddy’s U.S. hosting page currently displays promotional three-year prices of $5.99 per month for Economy, $7.99 for Deluxe, and $12.99 for Ultimate. The displayed regular prices are $11.99, $16.99, and $21.99 respectively. Economy lists one website and 25 GB of NVMe storage; Deluxe lists up to 10 websites and 50 GB; Ultimate lists up to 25 websites and 75 GB.
Rank #3
These are promotional, term-dependent prices requiring upfront payment and can change by geography or over time. Renewal pricing is higher. Check the current buying page for the exact country, term, domain charges, email costs, SSL treatment, and add-ons.
Lightsail pricing
Lightsail currently displays Linux/Unix bundles with public IPv4 beginning at $5 per month:
| Monthly price | Displayed resources | Transfer allowance |
|---|---|---|
| $5 | 0.5 GB memory, 2 vCPUs, 20 GB SSD | 1 TB |
| $7 | 1 GB memory, 2 vCPUs, 40 GB SSD | 2 TB |
| $12 | 2 GB memory, 2 vCPUs, 60 GB SSD | 3 TB |
| $24 | 4 GB memory, 2 vCPUs, 80 GB SSD | 4 TB |
These bundles are not equivalent to managed hosting. AWS can separately charge for snapshots, databases, block storage, load balancers, CDN services, domains, DNS, transfer overages, and other resources. Lightsail bills by the hour up to the monthly maximum, and resources can continue accruing charges until deleted. Stopping an instance does not necessarily stop every charge. AWS lists snapshot storage at $0.05 per GB-month. See the pricing page and billing FAQ.
The real cost also includes administration. A $5 server is not cheap if you must pay someone to patch it, secure it, monitor it, back it up, and recover it after an outage.
WordPress: GoDaddy Managed WordPress vs Lightsail
| Feature | GoDaddy Managed WordPress | Lightsail WordPress |
|---|---|---|
| Installation | Managed and generally automated | One-click blueprint |
| Server access | Limited compared with a virtual server | SSH and virtual-server access |
| Core updates | Included according to plan and product settings | Your responsibility |
| Caching and SSL | Integrated features are available | Must be configured and maintained |
| Backups | Plan-dependent automatic backups | Owner-created snapshots and other backup methods |
| Plugins | Some plugins are restricted | Greater freedom, with more responsibility |
| Multisite | Not supported by GoDaddy Managed WordPress | Technically possible, but requires administration |
GoDaddy’s backup documentation describes 30 days of automatic Managed WordPress backups, while other GoDaddy pages use different backup-frequency language for particular plans. Treat frequency as plan-specific rather than universal. GoDaddy also warns that backup access depends on the hosting plan remaining active, so failed billing or cancellation can affect restoration.
Lightsail snapshots are useful, but you must create, retain, and pay for them. A sound backup plan should answer whether databases are included, whether copies are independent, how long they are retained, and whether restoration has actually been tested.
Ease of use and support
GoDaddy wins for convenience. Its dashboard, cPanel workflow, managed WordPress tools, migration options, and phone or chat support reduce the operational burden. GoDaddy advertises 24/7 support on its hosting plans.
AWS wins for control. Lightsail simplifies deployment, but even a one-click instance still requires DNS, SSH, security, updates, certificates, backups, and billing monitoring. AWS offers extensive documentation and support plans, but its basic cloud services should not be treated as a traditional managed-hosting help desk.
Independent reader supportYour contribution helps us test, update, and keep practical guides available for everyone.Performance, scalability, and security
Neither provider is automatically faster. Performance depends on the application, server resources, region, caching, database design, traffic pattern, and configuration. A managed shared host may be perfectly adequate for a small site, while a poorly configured cloud server can perform badly.
AWS offers a broader scaling path: Lightsail, EC2, CloudFront, databases, load balancers, containers, monitoring, queues, and other services. That does not mean scaling happens automatically; it requires architecture, configuration, monitoring, and often engineering work.

GoDaddy may advertise SSL, malware scanning, WAF, CDN, DDoS protection, automatic updates, and managed security features depending on the product. AWS provides building blocks such as IAM, security groups, TLS services, WAF, logging, monitoring, and snapshots. On AWS, the customer must configure those controls correctly.
With either provider, use strong unique passwords, multifactor authentication where available, least-privilege accounts, current software, independent backups, and a tested recovery process. “Unmetered” bandwidth and a 99.9% uptime guarantee do not mean unlimited compute or guaranteed real-world performance; resource limits and contractual exclusions still apply.
Which should you choose?
- Choose GoDaddy Managed WordPress if you want WordPress with minimal server administration, integrated tools, and conventional support.
- Choose GoDaddy cPanel hosting if you need several modest websites and prefer familiar shared-hosting controls.
- Choose Lightsail if you understand SSH, DNS, Linux updates, backups, and security but want a simpler AWS entry point and predictable virtual-server pricing.
- Choose EC2 if you need custom networking, special software, multi-tier architecture, advanced deployment workflows, or granular scaling.
- Choose S3 plus CloudFront for a static site when you are comfortable configuring storage, CDN delivery, DNS, HTTPS, and caching.
Setup and migration checklists
GoDaddy
- Select cPanel, Managed WordPress, Websites + Marketing, or a VPS based on the site’s actual requirements.
- Connect the domain and configure DNS.
- Enable HTTPS and verify the certificate on the public domain.
- Install or migrate the site.
- Confirm caching, backups, forms, email, analytics, and spam protection.
- Test restoration before relying on the backup feature.
- Record promotional, renewal, domain, email, security, and add-on charges.
Lightsail WordPress
- Create an AWS account and set billing alerts.
- Choose a region near the main audience and select the WordPress blueprint.
- Attach a static IP and use one-click SSH.
- Change default credentials and harden the instance.
- Configure DNS and HTTPS.
- Set up WordPress, operating-system, plugin, and theme updates.
- Create and retain snapshots and monitor their costs.
- Add a CDN, database, or load balancer only when the site requires it.
Before migrating, lower DNS TTL where appropriate, make an independent backup, verify the new site on a temporary address, plan the DNS cutover, preserve email records, and keep a rollback copy. Check GoDaddy plugin restrictions before moving a customized WordPress site.
When each platform is the wrong choice
GoDaddy may be wrong when you need root access, custom daemons, unusual networking, multisite WordPress, dedicated resources, or an engineering-led deployment pipeline. A managed plan’s restrictions may be useful for stability but limiting for specialized projects.
AWS may be wrong when you are a beginner, need a simple business site, have no administrator, or cannot tolerate usage-based billing and maintenance responsibilities. In those cases, the extra flexibility is more liability than benefit.
