9 Blockchain Naming Service (BNS) Platforms to Get Your Blockchain Domain Name

The best blockchain naming service depends on your primary chain. Compare nine platforms by name format, registration model, compatibility, ownership and security.

The best blockchain naming service depends on the network you use. Ethereum users will usually start with ENS, Solana users with Solana Name Service, Base users with Basenames, and BNB Chain or Arbitrum users with SPACE ID. Unstoppable Domains and Freename are broader commercial options, while Handshake, Sonic Name Service, and Bitcoin Network System serve more specialized audiences.

A blockchain domain is an on-chain name that can point to wallet addresses, profiles, decentralized content, or other records. It is not automatically a normal website address, and owning one does not mean every wallet, exchange, browser, or dApp will recognize it.

Quick comparison: the nine blockchain naming services

Platform Main format Best for Registration model Main limitation
ENS .eth Ethereum identity and payments Annual registration for native .eth names Renewals and Ethereum gas
Unstoppable Domains .crypto, .x, .wallet and others Broad commercial Web3 domain catalog Many extensions are marketed as one-time purchases; terms vary Support differs by extension and application
Solana Name Service .sol Solana users Official guide describes one-time registration charges Limited portability outside Solana
SPACE ID .bnb, .arb, .eth and others BNB Chain, Arbitrum and multichain discovery Time-based registration plus gas Renewal and chain-specific support
Basenames .base.eth Base and Coinbase ecosystem users Base-specific terms and eligibility Primarily Base-focused
Handshake Custom HNS names Alternative DNS-root experimentation Coin- and auction-based Technical setup and limited ordinary-browser support
Freename Custom domains and TLDs Brands, communities and custom namespaces Product- and TLD-specific Custom extensions may have weak compatibility
Sonic Name Service Sonic-native names Sonic users and builders Check current service terms Smaller ecosystem
Bitcoin Network System .btc Experimental Bitcoin-branded naming Project claims free qualifying registration and renewal Limited independently established adoption

Prices, gas costs, eligibility, supported wallets and renewal rules can change. Treat the table as a decision guide, not a live price list.

What is a blockchain domain?

A blockchain domain is a human-readable name recorded or managed through blockchain infrastructure. Instead of asking someone to send funds to a long hexadecimal address, you may be able to give them a name such as example.eth or example.sol.

  • Trusted by 6 million users worldwide - buy, sell, swap, stake, and spend cryptocurrency directly. The secure offline storage wallet designed for how people actually use crypto wallets

Depending on the service and the application, a name can store or resolve to:

  • One or more cryptocurrency wallet addresses.
  • A primary identity name for a wallet.
  • Avatars, social profiles and other metadata.
  • IPFS or Arweave content.
  • A decentralized application or website destination.
  • Custom records used by wallets and dApps.

These systems are not interchangeable. ENS is an Ethereum naming layer; .sol names are native to Solana; .base.eth names are designed around Base; and Handshake is an attempt to create an alternative naming root rather than simply a wallet alias. ENS describes its system as a blockchain-based naming layer for addresses, decentralized content and other records, not automatically a replacement for ordinary DNS. See the ENS protocol documentation and ENS FAQ.

1. Ethereum Name Service (ENS)

Ethereum Name Service is the best-known general-purpose naming system for Ethereum. Native names normally end in .eth, and a name can contain wallet addresses, primary-name information, avatars, social records and decentralized-content records.

ENS records are managed through its registry and resolver architecture. The owner, resolver and other settings are recorded through Ethereum infrastructure; the ENS Root is governed by the ENS DAO wallet, according to the ENS registry documentation.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Registration and cost

Native .eth names use annual registration. The fee depends on the name length and registration period, while Ethereum gas is separate. Imported DNS names follow different rules. Do not rely on an old dollar estimate: confirm the current amount in the official interface.

How to register an ENS name

  1. Start at the official app: app.ens.domains.
  2. Connect a compatible wallet and search for a name.
  3. Choose the registration period.
  4. Complete the requested transactions and pay the registration fee and gas.
  5. Set the wallet-address records and, if desired, make the name your primary name.
  6. Confirm the owner, resolver and expiry date on-chain.

ENS is strongest for Ethereum users who want broad ecosystem recognition and flexible records. Its main disadvantages are annual renewal, Ethereum transaction costs and uneven support outside ENS-compatible wallets and dApps. ENS specifically warns users about lookalike websites; use its official websites and apps guidance.

2. Unstoppable Domains

Unstoppable Domains is a commercial provider offering extensions such as .crypto, .x, .wallet, .nft, .bitcoin, .polygon, .dao and .blockchain.

Its appeal is convenience: users can search a broad catalog through one commercial interface instead of learning several chain-specific protocols. The provider also documents blockchain support for relevant management and API workflows on Polygon PoS and Base.

Pick the symptom - the matching free tool is one click away.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Registration and ownership

Many Unstoppable domains are marketed as one-time purchases rather than annual rentals, but that does not mean every extension has identical terms. Pricing varies by extension, character count, premium status and availability. Premium and hand-picked names may cost substantially more. Review the exact terms for the selected extension on the provider’s pricing documentation.

A one-time purchase can remove ordinary renewal payments, but it does not guarantee permanent compatibility. A wallet may stop supporting an extension, a gateway may disappear, or an application may never have supported it in the first place.

  • Effortless Asset Management: Monitor and transact seamlessly with Trezor Suite, our intuitive desktop and mobile app
  • Enhanced Backup Solution: Multi-share Backup eliminates single points of failure for secure cold wallet recovery

Best use

Unstoppable is a reasonable starting point for beginners, creators and brands seeking a commercial Web3 identity with extensions other than .eth or .sol. It is a weaker choice when guaranteed native support inside one particular chain’s dApps matters more than catalog breadth.

3. Solana Name Service (SNS)

Solana Name Service provides .sol names for Solana wallets and applications. Its documentation says names can resolve to wallet addresses and records such as IPFS CIDs, Arweave hashes, words and images.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Published price schedule

The official registration guide lists these documented one-time USD-equivalent charges for immediate registration:

  • One character: $750.
  • Two characters: $700.
  • Three characters: $640.
  • Four characters: $160.
  • Five or more characters: $20.

The displayed amount is paid in a selected token, and storage size can add variable Solana account or rent-related costs. The guide’s schedule may not be a live 2026 quotation, so confirm the checkout amount before signing.

SNS says names can be registered in batches and automatically linked to the wallet that signs the transaction. The service is particularly attractive to users who transact primarily on Solana and want to avoid annual naming fees. The trade-off is that a .sol name is not automatically portable to Ethereum, Base or BNB Chain applications.

Registration path

  1. Open the official SNS interface or begin through its registration guide.
  2. Search for a .sol name and select it.
  3. Choose an appropriate storage size. Basic payment use needs less storage than an IPFS-hosted site.
  4. Select the wallet and payment token.
  5. Approve the Solana transaction or transactions.
  6. Verify the name and address records in the SNS management interface.

Solana’s account-storage mechanics can affect the transaction total. “One-time registration” should not be interpreted as “there can never be another network or storage cost.”

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

4. SPACE ID

SPACE ID provides discovery, registration, management, trading and developer tools for multiple Web3 naming systems. Its documentation covers names including .bnb, .arb and .eth, with a name SDK and API for resolution.

For BNB Chain users, .bnb names are the central offering. SPACE ID says those names have been integrated with more than 100 projects, including BscScan and Trust Wallet; this is a first-party adoption claim rather than an independent universal-support guarantee.

Registration model

Supported names generally use time-based registration. Price depends on name length and duration, and gas is extra. The current registration tutorial describes a two-transaction flow: a request transaction followed by registration. The wallet must also be connected to the correct chain.

  1. Open the official SPACE ID platform.
  2. Connect a wallet and search the Discover interface.
  3. Select the relevant TLD and verify the network.
  4. Choose the registration duration.
  5. Approve the request transaction and then the registration transaction.
  6. Set a primary name or records where supported.
  7. Save the renewal date.

SPACE ID is a strong fit for BNB Chain and Arbitrum users and for developers resolving several supported name systems. Its weakness is that “multichain” can mean lookup through one interface, not that every name is owned or recognized identically across all chains.

5. Basenames

Basenames are Base’s on-chain identity names, usually formatted as .base.eth. Base presents them as a human-readable identity layer for wallet addresses and the Base ecosystem.

Basenames are a good choice when most activity occurs on Base, particularly for Coinbase ecosystem users, Base builders and applications designed around Base identity. They are not the best default for someone who needs broad, chain-neutral resolution.

Pricing and registration

Base has displayed eligibility-based free-name claims, including conditions involving four-or-more-letter names. Eligibility, availability, promotional terms and current checkout pricing can change. Do not treat a free claim as the permanent standard price.

  1. Begin at Base’s official names page.
  2. Connect the wallet or follow the displayed claim flow.
  3. Search for an available .base.eth name.
  4. Review the current price, eligibility, duration and gas requirements.
  5. Confirm the transaction.
  6. Verify that the intended wallet controls the name and test it in Base-supported applications.

Basenames should be viewed as a Base-native identity primitive rather than simply another general ENS competitor.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

6. Handshake

Handshake is more ambitious than a wallet-name marketplace. It is a permissionless naming protocol intended to provide an alternative root naming system. Handshake describes a model in which peers validate and manage the root DNS naming zone.

How it differs

Handshake names are typically acquired through a bidding and auction process using HNS coins, rather than a simple fixed-price search-and-buy transaction. Once acquired, the owner must configure records and use a compatible resolver, browser, gateway or DNS setup.

This makes Handshake relevant to developers experimenting with alternative DNS, censorship resistance or custom top-level namespaces. It is a poor fit for a beginner who only wants a convenient payment alias.

Practical limitations

  • Ordinary browsers may not resolve HNS names without additional configuration.
  • Buying a name does not automatically host a website or provide TLS certificates.
  • The user needs HNS tokens and must understand bidding and wallet security.
  • DNS resolution, website hosting and blockchain ownership remain separate tasks.

Use a compatible wallet or registrar, verify the auction process, finalize the winning bid where applicable, configure records and test the name from an independent resolver.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

7. Freename

Freename focuses on blockchain domains, custom TLDs and Web3 identity. Its Freename Service documentation describes smart-contract-managed domains and records that can contain cryptocurrency addresses and URIs. The documentation lists Polygon, BNB Chain, Aurora and Cronos among supported blockchains for the documented contracts.

Freename is most interesting to brands, communities and projects that want a custom namespace rather than only a personal payment alias. A custom TLD can be useful for branding, but it may have little value outside Freename’s own ecosystem or integrated resolvers.

Risks to evaluate

Review the exact chain, record capabilities, transfer rules, pricing and renewal terms for the product you are buying. The documentation identifies a ProxyAdmin contract with upgrade rights held by the Freename team. That does not automatically make the service unsuitable, but it means “on-chain” should not be confused with complete protocol-level independence.

Also check trademarks before registering a brand-like name. Blockchain availability is not legal permission to use a mark.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

8. Sonic Name Service

Sonic Name Service is a chain-specific naming and identity system associated with Sonic. Its documentation compares SNS with ENS and positions the service around Sonic’s chain environment.

The main reason to choose it is ecosystem fit: Sonic users and builders may prefer a native identity name that can be recognized by Sonic applications. The main disadvantage is maturity. Its ecosystem and independently verifiable integrations are smaller than those of ENS, Solana Name Service or Base.

Before registering, check the current official documentation for availability, price, registration interface, renewal rules, supported wallets and resolver behavior. Those details can change, and they should not be guessed from comparisons with ENS. Also distinguish “Sonic Name Service” from Solana Name Service: both may be abbreviated SNS, but they are unrelated systems.

9. Bitcoin Network System (BNS)

Bitcoin Network System uses .btc names and presents itself as a cross-chain naming system. Its website claims that names longer than four characters can be registered for free and that yearly renewal is also free, while renewal helps prevent names from sinking or becoming inactive.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Those are project claims and should be verified in the live interface before connecting a wallet. Free registration does not establish meaningful wallet, exchange, browser or dApp compatibility. The service has much less independently established ecosystem visibility than ENS, Solana Name Service, Base or SPACE ID.

Who should consider it?

BNS may appeal to someone experimenting with a .btc identity or looking for a no-registration-fee option. It is not the right default for someone who needs mature integrations or predictable resolution across major wallets.

Use the official site, verify the contract and wallet connection, review the exact free-registration and renewal terms, and test whether the intended application actually resolves the name. A separate or hardware-backed wallet is sensible for experimental services.

How to choose a blockchain naming service

Choose based on where you transact

  • Ethereum: ENS.
  • Solana: Solana Name Service.
  • Base: Basenames.
  • BNB Chain or Arbitrum: SPACE ID.
  • Many commercial extensions: Unstoppable Domains.
  • Custom TLD branding: Freename.
  • Alternative DNS root: Handshake.
  • Sonic-native identity: Sonic Name Service.
  • Experimental .btc naming: Bitcoin Network System.

Compare the total cost, not just the headline price

Include the registration fee, renewal, blockchain gas, Solana account or storage costs, premium pricing, secondary-market premiums, transfer fees, custom-TLD costs and the cost of obtaining protocol tokens such as HNS. A low-cost name that cannot be resolved where you need it may be more expensive in practice than a better-supported alternative.

Check what “ownership” means

Ask which blockchain holds the name, whether you control it with a private key, whether the platform can upgrade its contracts, whether administrators can reserve or freeze names, whether the name is transferable and whether the front end is required to manage it.

A self-custodied name can still become practically unusable if the provider disappears, a resolver stops serving records, wallets stop supporting the extension or the name only worked through a closed application.

Check resolution support

Look for actual support in the wallet, exchange, payment app, browser, messaging app and dApp where you intend to use the name. A developer SDK or API proves that a service can be integrated; it does not prove universal adoption.

What happens if something goes wrong?

The name appears available but registration fails

Possible causes include a reserved or protected name, premium pricing, unsupported characters, an auction or unreleased state, stale interface data or a wallet connected to the wrong network. Check the official documentation and the transaction network before repeatedly signing.

Free tools Windows power users keep installed

The name registers but the wallet does not display it

The wallet may not support the resolver, the name may not be set as the primary name, reverse resolution may be incomplete, the application may read another chain or cached data may be stale. Owning a name and displaying it as your wallet identity are separate operations.

The name resolves to the wrong address

Check the selected chain, resolver records and ownership. You may have updated one record while the dApp reads another, or you may have copied a lookalike name. Before sending a meaningful amount, compare the resolved address with the recipient’s independently verified address and send a small test transaction.

The name expires

For renewable names, missing the deadline may cause loss of primary-name status, a grace period, release to the public or a later auction. The exact result differs by service. Save the expiry date in multiple reminders and review the rules before purchase.

The wallet is lost

In a self-custody system, the private key generally controls the name and its records. Customer support usually cannot recover it. Use hardware-wallet security for valuable names, maintain a secure recovery process and test transfers with low-value names before committing a valuable identity to a new system.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Blockchain domains, websites and DNS are different

A blockchain name might be only a payment alias. It might also point to IPFS or Arweave content, a gateway URL, a conventional website or a profile. Website use may require hosting, a resolver, a gateway, TLS configuration and a browser that recognizes the naming system.

Do not buy a blockchain name assuming it will work when typed into every ordinary browser. Conversely, do not assume that a name that resolves to a website also works as a payment name in every wallet.

Trademark and typosquatting risks

An available blockchain name is not automatically legally safe. Registering another company’s trademark does not give you permission to use it commercially, and a near-spelling or homograph can mislead users.

Research has documented typosquatting and squatting risks across systems including ENS, Unstoppable Domains and ADAHandles, including transactions sent to squatter-controlled names. See the published research paper.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.
  • Search trademark databases before registering a business or product name.
  • Avoid names that imitate another brand or wallet.
  • Verify the full name and resolved address before every payment.
  • Do not use a blockchain name as the only proof of identity.
  • Be especially cautious with visually similar characters and altered spellings.

Safety checklist before registering

  1. Start from the service’s official website or documentation, not an unverified sponsored search result.
  2. Confirm the blockchain and wallet network.
  3. Check whether the name is annual, multi-year, one-time, auction-based or subject to free-renewal claims.
  4. Review gas, storage, premium and secondary-market costs.
  5. Inspect every wallet prompt and reject unexpected approvals or blind signatures.
  6. Confirm the owner and address records after registration.
  7. Set the primary or reverse name separately if required.
  8. Test the name with a small transaction and an independent address check.
  9. Save renewal and expiry reminders.
  10. Use hardware-wallet security for names with financial or brand value.

Which blockchain naming service is best?

There is no universal winner because these platforms solve different problems. ENS is the strongest general Ethereum option; Solana Name Service is the natural Solana choice; Basenames fit Base; and SPACE ID is useful for BNB Chain, Arbitrum and supported multichain discovery. Unstoppable Domains offers the broadest commercial extension catalog, while Freename is more suitable for custom namespaces. Handshake is for alternative-DNS experimentation, Sonic Name Service for Sonic-native identity, and Bitcoin Network System for cautious experimentation with .btc naming.
