Best Smartphones Under $300 in the US (October 2024)

The Moto G Power 5G (2024) was the best all-around new phone under $300 in the US in October 2024, while Samsung’s Galaxy A25 offered a better display and software outlook. Here’s how to compare unlocked, refurbished, and carrier-priced options.

The Motorola Moto G Power 5G (2024) was the best all-around new phone under $300 in the US in October 2024. Samsung’s Galaxy A25 5G was the better choice for an AMOLED display and a more reassuring software-support outlook. If camera quality and long-term updates mattered most, a Google Pixel 8a was the smarter purchase—but only when discounted, refurbished, or included in a carrier promotion that genuinely brought the total cost below $300.

This is a historical US buying guide. Prices and availability change, and “under $300” here means the phone’s price before tax, without a trade-in, required new line, carrier switch, or installment-plan commitment.

Quick comparison

Phone Best for Key strengths Main drawback Price qualification
Motorola Moto G Power 5G (2024) Most buyers 5,000mAh battery, 120Hz display, wireless charging, stereo speakers, headphone jack, microSD LCD screen, average cameras, weaker long-term support than Google or Samsung Genuine new sub-$300 candidate
Samsung Galaxy A25 5G Display and software confidence Bright FHD+ AMOLED display, 5G, microSD, useful camera system No wireless charging; performance is adequate rather than exceptional Genuine new sub-$300 candidate
OnePlus Nord N30 5G Fast charging 50W wired charging, 120Hz display, 108MP main camera Limited camera versatility and underwhelming update outlook Buy only at a clearly low price
CMF Phone 1 Design and performance value Strong hardware value and large battery US bands, warranty, carrier support, and NFC require careful verification Include only when official US availability is confirmed
Google Pixel 8a Camera and updates Excellent computational photography, Tensor G3, seven-year support promise Normally above this budget; slower charging and no microSD Discounted or refurbished exception only

Specifications for the Motorola’s US model are listed in Motorola’s support documentation. Contemporary comparisons from Wired, Android Central, and October 2024 budget-phone coverage support the positioning above.

1. Motorola Moto G Power 5G (2024): best overall

The Moto G Power 5G (2024) offered the most balanced new-phone package below $300. Its US configuration combined a 6.7-inch Full HD+ 120Hz display, MediaTek Dimensity 7020 processor, 8GB of RAM, 128GB of storage, microSD expansion, a 5,000mAh battery, 5G, stereo speakers, NFC, a headphone jack, and 15W wireless charging.

#1 Best Overall
Tracfone Motorola Moto G 2025, 64GB, Saphire Blue (Locked to
  • Carrier: This phone is locked to Tracfone, which means this device can only be used on the Tracfone wireless network. Tracfone plan required, activating is easy, just 3 steps.
  • DISPLAY: Immersive viewing on a 6.7-inch super-bright 120Hz display with powerful stereo speakers and Bass Boost for cinematic entertainment.
  • CAMERA SYSTEM: Advanced 50MP Quad Pixel camera captures sharp, detailed photos and videos in any lighting condition
  • PERFORMANCE: Lightning-fast 5G connectivity paired with a powerful processor and RAM Boost for smooth multitasking.
  • BATTERY LIFE: Long-lasting 5000mAh battery with TurboPower charging technology delivers hours of power in minutes.

It also supported 30W wired charging, although the charger included can vary by sales channel or carrier. The 50MP main camera included optical image stabilization, but the camera system was not as versatile or consistently impressive as Google’s. The LCD panel was smooth and practical, yet it lacked the contrast and deep blacks of the Galaxy A25’s AMOLED screen.

Performance was suitable for messaging, browsing, navigation, streaming, social media, multitasking, and casual games. It should not be treated as a high-end gaming phone: the processor was adequate, not designed for sustained demanding games, heavy editing, or flagship-level longevity.

Buy it if: you want the best mix of battery capacity, smooth scrolling, useful ports, expandable storage, wireless charging, and low upfront cost.

Skip it if: you prioritize an AMOLED display, the best camera processing, water resistance, or the longest clearly documented software-support period.

2. Samsung Galaxy A25 5G: best display and support alternative

The Galaxy A25 5G was the more compelling choice for buyers who cared about screen quality and Samsung’s broader software ecosystem. Its bright FHD+ AMOLED display delivered deeper blacks and stronger contrast than the Motorola’s LCD, while the 120Hz refresh rate made scrolling and animations feel smoother.

It also offered 5G, a 5,000mAh battery, expandable storage, and a 50MP main camera accompanied by an ultrawide camera. Samsung’s update commitment for this budget line was clearer and more reassuring than Motorola’s budget-phone reputation, but the exact promise depends on the US model and should be checked against Samsung’s documentation rather than assumed from the product name.

The trade-off was value in other areas. The A25 did not offer wireless charging, and its performance was better suited to ordinary everyday use than demanding gaming. Still, for someone keeping a phone for several years, the AMOLED screen and clearer support outlook could matter more than a small performance advantage elsewhere.

Skip it if: wireless charging, a headphone jack, or maximum hardware value is more important than display quality and software confidence.

3. OnePlus Nord N30 5G: best fast-charging option

The Nord N30 5G’s standout feature was 50W wired charging. Its large 120Hz display and 108MP main-camera specification also looked attractive on paper, making it a strong option for buyers who wanted a large screen and short charging times.

However, megapixels did not tell the whole story. Reviews noted limited camera versatility and a weak software-support outlook. The phone’s secondary cameras were not a substitute for a genuinely strong ultrawide system, and its older platform made it harder to recommend as a long-term purchase when newer alternatives were similarly priced.

Buy it if: fast wired charging is your highest priority and the phone is substantially cheaper than newer competitors.

Skip it if: you plan to keep the phone for many years, want dependable camera versatility, or value a clearly defined update policy.

4. CMF Phone 1: attractive hardware, but verify the US details

The CMF Phone 1 was a compelling value candidate in broader under-$300 coverage because of its design, performance, and large battery. It belongs in a qualified section rather than an unconditional US recommendation.

Before buying, verify the exact US sales channel, model number, cellular bands, warranty, return policy, and NFC support. NFC matters for tap-to-pay and some transit or access functions. Imported or region-specific versions can differ in storage, bands, software, and features even when the product name is identical.

Buy it if: you have confirmed US compatibility and are comfortable with a less established support and repair ecosystem.

Skip it if: you need guaranteed carrier activation, tap-to-pay, or straightforward US warranty service.

5. Google Pixel 8a: the best deal if it falls below $300

The Pixel 8a was arguably the best camera-and-software phone in this group, but it was not normally a new $299 phone. Google launched it in the US with the Tensor G3 processor, a 64MP main camera, a 13MP ultrawide camera, and a seven-year software-support promise. Its standard positioning was above the category ceiling.

That makes the Pixel 8a a deal or refurbished recommendation, not a normal new-phone ranking entry. It becomes especially attractive when a reputable US retailer, Google, or a carrier offers it below $300 without hidden activation or trade-in requirements.

A refurbished Pixel 8a—or Pixel 7a—can outperform a new budget Motorola or OnePlus for photography and software. Check the battery-health disclosure, warranty, return period, unlocked status, model number, and compatibility with Verizon, AT&T, or T-Mobile before buying.

Buy it if: camera quality, clean Android, and long software support matter more than charging speed, expandable storage, a headphone jack, or a very large battery.

Skip it if: the listing is carrier-locked, lacks a meaningful warranty, has unclear battery condition, or exceeds $300 after required activation steps.

What “under $300” should mean

Use a consistent price rule when comparing phones:

  • Count: an unlocked or carrier-compatible phone priced below $300 before sales tax.
  • Do not count as a standard recommendation: a phone that reaches $299 only after a trade-in, new line, carrier switch, installment commitment, or bill credit.
  • Separate: new, refurbished, open-box, and carrier-locked devices.
  • Include in the practical cost: a charger if one is not supplied, but exclude optional cases, protection plans, and accessories from the headline price.

A “$0 phone” may be a sensible carrier promotion, but it is not equivalent to a $0 unlocked phone. Label activation requirements, plan costs, trade-ins, and financing prominently.

Unlocked, carrier-compatible, and imported are not the same

Do not infer compatibility from the word “5G.” Confirm the exact model number and supported bands for the intended network. Verizon, AT&T, T-Mobile, and their MVNOs can require different bands, certification, or activation procedures.

Before purchasing, confirm:

  • the phone is explicitly unlocked, not merely advertised as “compatible”;
  • the exact US model number;
  • LTE and 5G band support for your carrier;
  • whether Verizon activation is supported if relevant;
  • physical SIM, eSIM, or dual-SIM support;
  • the seller’s return policy and blacklist or financing status.

The Moto G Power’s US specifications list broad US connectivity, NFC, dual-SIM capability, and microSD expansion, but that does not make every regional Moto G Power variant equivalent.

Display, battery, and charging trade-offs

AMOLED versus LCD: AMOLED generally provides deeper blacks and stronger contrast, making the Galaxy A25 better for video and visual impact. LCD can still be perfectly usable and may avoid some low-frequency dimming concerns. A 120Hz mode improves scrolling and animation, but it can consume more power and may be adaptive or battery-dependent.

  • BUILT TO LAST: With an improved IP54 rating, Galaxy A17 5G is even more durable than before.⁴ It’s built to resist splashes and dust and comes with a stronger yet slimmer Gorilla Glass Victus front and Glass Fiber Reinforced Polymer back.

Battery capacity: A 5,000mAh battery is common in this category. Real endurance depends on brightness, signal strength, refresh-rate settings, gaming, camera use, and background apps. Capacity alone does not prove two-day battery life.

Charging: the Moto G Power combined 30W wired charging with 15W wireless charging; the Nord N30’s advantage was 50W wired charging. Charging speed can vary with the adapter, cable, temperature, and software. Confirm whether a compatible charger is included with the particular listing.

What to expect from cameras

At this price, a high megapixel count is not a quality guarantee. Consider daylight detail, low-light processing, autofocus, stabilization, portrait separation, video quality, selfie performance, and whether the ultrawide camera is genuinely useful.

The Pixel 8a was the clear camera choice when legitimately available below $300 because Google’s image processing mattered more than raw megapixels. The Moto G Power offered a stabilized 50MP main camera but less versatility. The Nord N30’s 108MP specification was appealing, yet its camera system was less complete than the number suggested. Budget macro and depth sensors should not be treated as equivalent to a good ultrawide camera.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Software support matters more than a small speed difference

Compare the Android version at launch, promised major upgrades, security-support duration, update frequency, preinstalled apps, and the manufacturer’s record of delivering updates. Also check when the support period begins: at launch, purchase, or another date.

Google explicitly promoted seven years of software support for the Pixel 8a. Samsung offered a stronger and clearer support story than Motorola’s budget line, although the exact policy should be checked for the specific US model. The Nord N30’s support outlook was notably less attractive. Motorola’s policies can vary by model year and region, so do not apply one Moto G policy to every budget device.

New versus refurbished: which is better?

A refurbished Pixel 8a or Pixel 7a may deliver better photos and longer support than a new sub-$300 phone. The trade-off is condition risk. Before buying refurbished, verify:

  • battery-health disclosure or replacement policy;
  • screen and camera replacement history;
  • water-damage disclosure;
  • warranty length and return window;
  • unlocked status and exact regional model;
  • compatibility with Verizon, AT&T, T-Mobile, or the intended MVNO.

Keep refurbished phones in a separate comparison from new phones. A refurbished price is not evidence that a new phone’s normal retail value has fallen below $300.

Phones to skip unless the terms are unusually good

  • Carrier-only “free” phones: skip the comparison unless you specifically want the required plan, activation, and bill-credit arrangement.
  • Imported global models: avoid when US bands, NFC, warranty, or return rights are unclear.
  • Older phones with weak support: a small performance advantage today may not compensate for an earlier security-update cutoff.
  • High-megapixel bargains: do not choose on camera resolution alone.
  • Listings with unclear seller status: “unlocked” is not enough if the device may be financed, blacklisted, or tied to another account.

Buying checklist

  1. Set the real budget below $300 before tax and exclude trade-in credits.
  2. Choose new or refurbished before comparing rankings.
  3. Confirm the exact model number and US region.
  4. Check compatibility with your carrier or MVNO.
  5. Confirm unlocked status, SIM options, NFC, storage, and microSD support.
  6. Check whether the charger is included.
  7. Read the seller’s warranty and return policy.
  8. Check the manufacturer’s support promise for that exact model.
  9. For refurbished devices, inspect battery condition and replacement history.
  10. Recalculate the total cost if the offer requires activation, a new line, financing, or a trade-in.
