Deezer began labeling albums containing fully AI-generated tracks on June 20, 2025. The label was intended to give listeners more transparency and help prevent mass-produced music and artificial streams from diverting royalties from human artists. By August 2026, the policy had expanded beyond disclosure: Deezer says AI-generated tracks can be excluded from recommendations, fraudulent streams can be demonetized, and certain tracks can be removed.
The distinction matters. Deezer has not announced a blanket ban on AI music. Its figures also show why upload statistics should not be confused with listening or royalty statistics: AI-generated tracks exceeded half of some daily upload volumes, but represented only about 1% to 3% of total streams, according to Deezer.
What Deezer’s AI label means
Deezer said it launched what it called the first user-facing AI-music tagging system on June 20, 2025. The system places an “AI-generated content” warning on albums containing one or more fully AI-generated songs. Its initial focus was not every track that used an AI tool during production, such as mastering, noise removal, stem separation or vocal editing.
A label is also not the same as removal. Deezer’s stated approach has been to keep detected tracks available to listeners while:

- One Account, All Devices: Sync with your Google account to keep playlists, favorites, and subscriptions the same across phone, tablet, and player
- Displaying a disclosure to users;
- Excluding detected AI-generated tracks from algorithmic recommendations;
- Keeping them out of Deezer’s editorial playlists; and
- Removing streams identified as fraudulent from royalty calculations.
In July 2026, Deezer said it would systematically remove AI tracks used for streaming fraud, as well as tracks that had received no streams for at least six months. That is a targeted takedown policy, not a claim that every AI-generated song is prohibited.
Deezer’s original announcement describes the label as a transparency and anti-fraud measure.
Why AI music is connected to streaming fraud
Generative tools can create music quickly and cheaply. That lowers the cost of uploading very large catalogs. A bad actor can then combine mass uploads with purchased streams, automated replays or coordinated listening schemes in an attempt to capture part of a royalty pool.
The financial concern is not that every AI-generated song is fraudulent. A human listener may legitimately choose to play an AI track, and an artist may use AI selectively in a human-led production. The concern is the combination of inexpensive mass production and manipulated consumption.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minute2Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problems3Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitchesIf artificial plays are counted, they can dilute the revenue available to legitimate artists and rights holders. Deezer’s research head has described people scripting computers to generate and upload thousands of tracks in batches, then attempting to overwhelm discovery and royalty systems. That is Deezer’s description of the operational threat, not proof that all AI catalogs are created for fraud.
Deezer’s AI-music growth timeline
| Date | Deezer-reported figure | What it shows |
|---|---|---|
| January 2025 | About 10,000 fully AI-generated tracks per day, roughly 10% of daily deliveries | Deezer disclosed its internal detection activity. |
| April 2025 | More than 20,000 per day, over 18% of uploads | AI-generated supply was growing rapidly before public labeling. |
| September 2025 | More than 30,000 per day | Detection volumes continued to rise. |
| January 2026 | About 60,000 per day, approximately 39% of intake | AI tracks approached two-fifths of new deliveries. |
| April 2026 | Nearly 75,000 per day, about 44% of uploads | AI music approached half of incoming supply. |
| June 2026 | More than 50% of daily new uploads, averaging around 90,000 per day | AI-generated tracks temporarily exceeded human-created uploads in incoming volume. |
These are platform-reported figures. More importantly, upload share is not listening share. Deezer said AI-generated music represented only about 1% to 3% of total streams. A large number of uploads does not mean that listeners are hearing AI music half the time, or that AI artists are receiving half of royalty distributions.

How much AI music did Deezer label?
Deezer said it detected and tagged more than 13.4 million AI tracks during 2025. That is a Deezer-reported platform count, not an independently audited measurement of all AI music distributed across the industry.
In January 2026, Deezer also said that up to 85% of streams on fully AI-generated tracks in 2025 were fraudulent. The wording is important: the estimate applies to streams on fully AI-generated music, according to Deezer’s analysis. It does not mean 85% of all streams, 85% of all uploads or 85% of every AI track’s plays.

Deezer says its proprietary, patent-pending system looks for audio characteristics, or “signatures,” associated with generative systems. It initially detected music from prominent tools including Suno and Udio. Deezer says the system can be extended to other generators when suitable examples are available and has worked toward detecting AI music without relying exclusively on one named generator.
The company applied for two detection patents in December 2024. Deezer said the patents were published by European and U.S. patent offices in June 2026.
Deezer claims its detector is 99.8% accurate, which it says could mean missing approximately two out of every 1,000 AI-generated tracks. But accuracy alone is not enough to judge whether a system is fair or reliable. Deezer’s public materials do not fully disclose the test set, benchmark methodology, false-positive rate, model coverage or independent validation.
A meaningful evaluation would also need to test:
- Fully synthetic tracks versus hybrid recordings;
- New and unfamiliar generators;
- Audio altered through mastering, remixing, resampling or other post-processing;
- Different genres, languages and recording conditions; and
- Whether legitimate human recordings are incorrectly labeled.
Independent research has warned that AI-audio detectors can lack robustness in real-world conditions. Strong benchmark performance does not automatically establish dependable results against unseen generators or deliberately modified audio.

Fully AI-generated versus AI-assisted music
This is the policy’s most important qualification for artists. Deezer’s public labeling announcement focused on fully AI-generated music. That does not automatically mean a label is applied to every track involving:
- AI-assisted mixing or mastering;
- Stem separation or noise removal;
- AI-generated lyrics or arrangement suggestions;
- A human performance enhanced with an AI tool; or
- A small AI-generated element inside an otherwise human recording.
At the same time, Deezer’s research team has acknowledged that audio markers do not always allow the company to make a perfect distinction between fully synthetic and partially AI-assisted work. Deezer has been working toward stem-by-stem detection for hybrid recordings.
That creates a real gap between the policy’s simple public category and the complexity of modern production. “AI-generated” can refer to an entirely synthetic recording, an AI-generated vocal, a cloned voice, an AI-created instrumental bed or a human performance transformed by software. Those categories can have different copyright, royalty and disclosure implications.
What happens to artists and royalties?
Deezer’s stated objective is to protect artists from royalty dilution and discovery competition created by fraudulent or mass-produced catalogs. Its current approach separates several actions that are often incorrectly collapsed into the phrase “Deezer bans AI music.”
| Action | Meaning |
|---|---|
| Labeling | Listeners are told that an album includes AI-generated content. |
| Recommendation exclusion | The track is not used in Deezer’s algorithmic recommendations. |
| Editorial exclusion | The track is not placed in Deezer’s editorial playlists. |
| Demonetization | Streams identified as fraudulent are excluded from royalty payments. |
| Removal | Deezer has announced takedowns for AI tracks used for streaming fraud and tracks with no streams for six months or more. |
In April 2026, Deezer also said it had stopped storing high-resolution versions of AI tracks. That may reduce storage costs and operational exposure, but it is separate from whether the track remains playable.
The potential benefit for human artists is clearer separation between genuine audience activity and manipulated plays. But the outcome should not yet be described as proven. Public materials cited here do not provide independent evidence showing how much artists’ payouts improved after the changes.

There are also risks. A false positive could reduce a legitimate artist’s discovery, playlist access or reputation. An artist using AI as one part of a human-led workflow may not fit neatly into a fully human versus fully synthetic classification. Creators may also have an incentive to conceal AI use or modify audio to evade detection.
Deezer’s March 2026 partnership with Hungary’s EJI illustrates another use case. EJI acquired rights to use the detection technology to help identify recordings created without human participation for royalty-distribution purposes. Deezer says the system has been available for licensing since January 2026 to streaming services, distributors, rights organizations and other music businesses.

What listeners should know
An AI label is a disclosure, not a quality judgment, a legal finding or a guarantee that a song is undesirable. A labeled track may remain playable. Deezer says it will not appear in algorithmic recommendations or editorial playlists, but it can still be found through other routes.
The label may also not identify every form of AI assistance. It is primarily aimed at fully AI-generated content, while hybrid recordings and unfamiliar production techniques present more difficult detection questions.
Deezer launched a free public AI Music Detector in June 2026. According to Deezer, the tool:
- Lets users choose a streaming service;
- Connects to the relevant account;
- Scans playlists; and
- Displays the results for review and sharing.
Deezer says the detector works with playlists from 20 major streaming platforms, supports 27 languages and does not require a Deezer subscription. Users should still review the account permissions and privacy terms before connecting a streaming account. A result should be treated as a platform detection signal, not independent proof of how a song was made.

Why this matters to the wider music business
Deezer is attempting to turn detection into shared industry infrastructure. Its business offering is aimed at platforms, distributors, rights organizations, collecting societies and catalog managers. Public materials do not disclose pricing, complete API documentation, service-level terms or a full list of commercial customers.
For the industry, the opportunity is a common way to screen catalogs and identify recordings created without human participation. The problem is that there is no universal definition of “AI-generated,” and platform policies may differ. One service may disclose a hybrid track, another may ignore it, and a third may remove it after a fraud review.
That inconsistency could create practical problems for distributors and artists. A track accepted on one service might lose recommendation eligibility on another. Royalty administrators may also need evidence about the recording’s creation process, the source of a stream and whether a detection result is strong enough to support a payment decision.
For a detection program to be trusted, the industry will need more than a headline accuracy number. Important safeguards include published false-positive and false-negative rates, clear definitions, human review, an appeals process, privacy protections and independent testing across genres and production methods.

The bottom line for artists, listeners and royalty systems
Deezer’s June 2025 announcement was the beginning of a broader policy, not the whole story. The company has moved from visible labeling toward recommendation controls, fraud-based demonetization, commercial licensing, playlist scanning and targeted removals.
The central financial issue is streaming manipulation, not AI authorship by itself. AI tools make catalog flooding cheaper and easier to scale, but a synthetic song is not automatically fraudulent and a human-made song is not automatically safe from manipulation.
Deezer’s own numbers capture the unresolved tension: AI-generated tracks exceeded half of some daily upload volumes, yet accounted for only 1% to 3% of total streams. The long-term test will be whether platforms can make AI involvement transparent, remove artificial plays and protect royalty pools without wrongly penalizing legitimate artists whose workflows use AI selectively.
