You can create a branded WooCommerce cart without editing PHP, theme files, or custom CSS. For most modern stores, the best starting point is WooCommerce’s native Cart block: edit its layout in the WordPress block editor, style it with your theme’s controls, assign the page as WooCommerce’s cart, and test the complete purchase flow.
This guide explains the block method first, then covers Elementor, the classic [woocommerce_cart] shortcode, compatibility issues, and testing.
What “custom cart page” can mean
A custom cart page may involve one or more different changes:
- Styling: Changing colors, typography, spacing, borders, buttons, backgrounds, or widths.
- Rearranging content: Moving totals, coupons, shipping information, cross-sells, or notices.
- Changing behavior: Adding saved-for-later items, product recommendations, minimum-order rules, quantity limits, or free-shipping messaging.
- Replacing the interface: Building the cart with a visual builder or returning to the classic shortcode cart.
- Adding a branded shell: Placing headings, trust information, returns messaging, promotional banners, or FAQs around the functional cart.
A heading or attractive product grid is not a working cart by itself. Keep one supported WooCommerce cart implementation—the Cart block, the classic shortcode, or a compatible builder widget—so customers can update quantities, remove products, apply coupons, calculate shipping, view totals, and proceed to checkout.

The easiest method: customize the native Cart block
WooCommerce Cart and Checkout Blocks became the default for new installations beginning with WooCommerce 8.3, released in November 2023. Existing stores may still use the classic shortcode, particularly when older themes or extensions depend on it. See WooCommerce’s shortcode documentation and its Cart and Checkout guidance.
The native block is the best default for many stores because it is first-party, avoids an additional page-builder dependency, and provides no-code controls for the main cart experience.
Before you start
Confirm that you have:
- WordPress with WooCommerce activated and configured.
- At least one published product.
- A functioning Cart page and Checkout page.
- A block theme for full Site Editor template editing, or a classic theme that supports page-level blocks or a visual builder.
- Access to WooCommerce → Settings.
- A backup or staging copy before modifying a live transactional page.
- A test product and a way to run a test order.
Also check compatibility before changing the cart architecture. Payment gateways, subscriptions, product add-ons, quantity rules, dynamic pricing, deposits, bundles, memberships, tax and shipping tools, and cart-abandonment tools may not all support Cart Blocks equally.
If WooCommerce pages are missing, use WooCommerce → Status → Tools → Create pages. The official instructions are in WooCommerce’s page documentation.

- Go to Pages → All Pages and open the page named Cart.
- Open List View in the editor.
- Look for a Cart block.
- If you see a Shortcode block containing
[woocommerce_cart], the page uses the classic cart.
On a block theme, also inspect Appearance → Editor → Templates → WooCommerce → Page: Cart. The cart may be controlled by that template rather than ordinary page content. Interface labels can vary slightly by WordPress, WooCommerce, theme, and user permissions.
Step-by-step: customize the Cart block
1. Open the cart template or page
With a block theme, go to Appearance → Editor → Templates → WooCommerce → Page: Cart. On some configurations, you can edit the page through Pages → All Pages → Cart instead. WooCommerce documents both approaches in its cart-template guide.

2. Use List View
Open List View to expose the Cart block and its nested sections. A crowded cart is much easier to edit from the block hierarchy than by clicking directly on the preview.
The Cart block has separate filled-cart and empty-cart states. Make sure you edit both.

3. Configure the filled-cart state
The main areas have different jobs:
- Cart items: Displays product images, names, variations, prices, quantities, and remove controls.
- Cart totals: Shows subtotal, discounts, shipping, taxes where applicable, and the final total.
- Coupon form: Keep it prominent if your marketing relies on discount codes; otherwise, place it less prominently so it does not distract from checkout.
- Shipping calculator: Useful when rates depend on the destination. It may add little value when shipping is always free or fixed.
- Proceed to checkout: Keep this button prominent and visually distinct.
- Cross-sells: Place complementary products below or beside the main order summary, without overwhelming the customer.
- Store notices: Preserve these messages because they can communicate stock changes, coupon results, shipping updates, or cart errors.
The Cart block supports quantity updates, item removal, coupons, shipping options, order totals, and cross-sells. Its available settings are documented in the WooCommerce Cart block reference.
4. Arrange the page
A practical structure is:
- Branded heading.
- Optional free-shipping or order-progress message.
- Cart items.
- Coupon field in a less prominent area when appropriate.
- Cart totals and checkout button.
- Complementary cross-sells.
- Trust, delivery, or returns information below the transaction.
Do not hide essential controls merely to create a cleaner design. The customer should immediately understand what is being purchased, how much it costs, and how to continue.
5. Customize the empty-cart state
For an empty cart, provide a clear message and a useful next step:
- Explain that the cart is empty.
- Add a button to the shop or a relevant category.
- Optionally show best sellers, newest products, or a focused promotion.
- Avoid filling the page with unrelated products or distracting offers.
The block-based template supports separate empty-cart content and product suggestions.

6. Add and configure cross-sells
WooCommerce’s Cart block can display cross-sells as a stack, grid, or carousel. Depending on the available controls, you can adjust products per page, columns, maximum pages, and filters such as sale status and stock status. Recommend genuinely complementary products—for example, a case with a camera—not unrelated items.
7. Style without code
Use the editor and theme controls for:
- Global colors and typography.
- Button styles and contrast.
- Content width and column widths.
- Block spacing and alignment.
- Backgrounds, borders, and corner radius.
- Responsive behavior on narrow screens.
Prefer global styles and block settings over copied CSS. WooCommerce warns against depending on internal block class names because markup and block structure can change; see its block-theme development documentation.
8. Save and assign the page
After saving the design, go to WooCommerce → Settings → Advanced → Page setup and confirm that the page containing the Cart block is selected as the Cart page. Only one page can be designated as the cart at a time. Do not assign the same page as both Cart and Checkout; WooCommerce warns that doing so can cause redirects and payment-gateway problems.
Design principles for a usable cart
- Prioritize the order summary: Make products, quantities, shipping, discounts, and total easy to scan.
- Keep checkout obvious: Use a high-contrast button with a clear label.
- Make shipping understandable: Explain when rates require a destination or are calculated later.
- Use cross-sells sparingly: Recommendations should support, not interrupt, checkout.
- Put reassurance below the transaction: Delivery, returns, security, and support information can reduce uncertainty without competing with the checkout action.
- Design for mobile: Long product names, variation text, quantity controls, coupon fields, and cross-sell grids need room to work at narrow widths.
A cleaner cart may improve usability, but no design guarantees higher conversions. Results depend on the products, pricing, audience, traffic, and checkout experience.
Alternative: build the cart with Elementor
Elementor is worth considering when the site already uses Elementor or needs more visual control than the native block provides. Elementor’s WooCommerce features include Cart, Checkout, My Account, Purchase Summary, and WooCommerce Notices widgets. The precise widget and plan availability can change, so check the Cart widget documentation and plan comparison.
- Install and configure WooCommerce and Elementor.
- Use the plan that includes the required WooCommerce Cart widget or builder feature.
- Open the existing Cart page or create a new page.
- Remove the old cart component only as instructed by Elementor.
- Add the Cart widget and design the layout.
- Configure the empty-cart view if available.
- Publish and assign the page under WooCommerce → Settings → Advanced → Page setup.
- Test quantities, removal, coupons, shipping, taxes, login state, and checkout.
This route adds a plugin and potentially a recurring paid-plan cost. Builder templates can also conflict with themes, caching, optimization plugins, or WooCommerce extensions. Do not replace a working cart on a live store until the full flow has been tested.

When to switch back to the classic cart
The classic cart remains a valid compatibility option. Consider it when an extension does not support Cart Blocks, existing hooks depend on the shortcode cart, the store uses an older or heavily customized theme, or a builder integrates more reliably with the shortcode experience.
To revert a block cart:
- Open the Cart template or page.
- Select the Cart block in List View.
- Choose Transform.
- Select Classic Shortcode.
- Save and confirm that the page contains
[woocommerce_cart].
Do not place the shortcode beside a Cart block or builder Cart widget. That can create duplicate interfaces. WooCommerce generally recommends treating Cart and Checkout as a pair when reverting to the classic experience, because mixing implementations may cause compatibility problems.

The shortcode cart provides cart content, coupons, and basic order information, but it has fewer block-level design controls. Features available to the block cart—such as saved-for-later—may not appear. WooCommerce documents saved-for-later for the block-based cart, with controls shown to signed-in shoppers under the documented conditions; it is not shown on the classic shortcode cart.

The custom page does not display the cart
- Confirm the page is selected under WooCommerce → Settings → Advanced → Page setup → Cart page.
- Confirm it contains a Cart block,
[woocommerce_cart], or a supported builder widget. - Make sure it is not also assigned as Checkout.
- Check that the Cart block was not removed from the template.
- Check whether a builder template or theme template overrides the page.
- Clear or bypass caches and test again.
The cart appears twice
Remove one implementation. Common causes are a Cart block plus [woocommerce_cart], a theme template that outputs a cart alongside page content, or an Elementor Cart widget added without removing the previous cart.
Coupons are missing
Check that coupons are enabled in WooCommerce, that the coupon section was not removed, and that the test coupon is active and applicable to the product. A theme or extension may also alter coupon behavior.
Shipping options are missing
Review shipping zones and methods, the shopper’s destination, the product type, and whether the shipping calculator was removed. Virtual and downloadable products may not require shipping, and some rates cannot appear until an address is supplied.

The checkout button fails
Confirm that the Checkout page is assigned correctly and contains a valid Checkout block or [woocommerce_checkout]. Check the Cart block’s Proceed to Checkout destination, redirects, caching, optimization plugins, and maintenance or membership restrictions. Mixing classic and block Cart and Checkout implementations can also cause problems.
Saved-for-later is unavailable
It requires the block-based Cart page, published products, and a signed-in shopper. Guests may not see the controls, and the feature is not available on the classic shortcode cart.
Final testing checklist
Before publishing the redesigned cart, test:
- A simple product.
- A variable product and its variations.
- Multiple quantities and item removal.
- A valid and invalid coupon.
- Shipping calculations for relevant destinations.
- Taxes where applicable.
- Subtotal and total updates.
- The Proceed to Checkout link.
- A real or sandbox payment gateway.
- An empty cart and its return-to-shop action.
- Logged-in and logged-out shoppers.
- Desktop and narrow mobile screens.
- Product add-ons, subscriptions, bundles, memberships, or other active extensions.
- Back-button navigation, multiple tabs, and a private browser window.
- Keyboard navigation, visible focus, button labels, color contrast, and heading order.
Because carts are dynamic, test with caches cleared or bypassed. Where your caching system supports page exclusions, exclude Cart, Checkout, and Account pages from full-page caching according to that system’s documentation.
Which method should you choose?

Start with WooCommerce core and the native Cart block. Add Elementor only when its visual control justifies the extra dependency, and add an extension only for a clearly defined functional requirement. For compatibility-sensitive or revenue-critical changes, professional WooCommerce support may be safer than trial and error.

Can I customize a WooCommerce cart page for free?
Usually. WooCommerce core and WordPress’s native block editor can handle many layout and styling changes without a paid builder. Your hosting, theme, extensions, payment processing, and other services may still have separate costs.
Can I use the Cart block with a classic theme?
Often, yes, through page-level block editing, but full Site Editor template controls require a compatible block theme. The exact options depend on the theme and WooCommerce version.
Can I add cross-sells without coding?
Yes. The Cart block supports cross-sell layouts such as stacks, grids, and carousels, with controls for columns, products per page, maximum pages, and certain product filters.
Will a custom cart work with every payment gateway?
Not automatically. Payment, shipping, tax, subscription, add-on, and pricing extensions must be checked individually for Cart and Checkout Block compatibility.

Only if your theme or an installed extension provides that element. The native Cart block can be surrounded by promotional messaging, but a dynamic progress bar may require a compatible extension or builder feature.
